Since you're reading ResExcellence, it means you have an appetite for taking your user interface to the next level! Even if you don't have a question, you can learn a lot from browsing over 200 posts in the ResExcellence User Forum.
While I must admit I have not been following the development of Internet Explorer 5.0 on the Mac, Han-yi Shaw has given it a lot of thought! This page outlines and demonstrates via mockups, some examples of what the user interface could look like.
Scooter sent this link to Netscape Secrets - a site that delves into the tiny recesses of Netscape Communicator to discusses Global Histories, Cookies, and Cache.
Todd Johnson has added to his collection of Desktop Pictures based on a little known movie called "Star Wars". This latest creation features Darth Maul.
BeHierarchic 4.0 has been released boasting more features and Platinum menus! Unfortunately for me, it appears to conflict with Glidel, another of my favorites. Anyone else?
The folks at Kinetic Creations have released Export Icon, a Photoshop plugin to create 32 bit icons.
There is a slick utility on the full MacOS 8.6 CD called "iDo Script Scheduler 1.0". If you don't have the CD, you can download it as part of the AppleScript Additions.
This is a lite version (only three events) of a more powerful commercial program that lets you schedule the execution of AppleScripts.
Are you looking for more information on AppleScript? Start with Apple's AppleScript Site. It features a beginners tutorial and demo scripts to download.
When it comes to scripting, it's hard to read for more than ten minutes without seeing Bill Cheeseman's name. His site features The AppleScript Sourcebook, and information on creating folder actions.
With only 38 members, the Team ResExcellence slowly climbs its way to the top. Imagine how swiftly we would move with 100 members! :)
A year ago, Steve Jobs carried a ThinkPad running the NeXT operating system. Anyone know if he has switched to a Powerbook running OSX?

N8 Alf created this really nifty folder action AppleScript. Attach it to a folder, and every time someone opens or moves the folder, it becomes a popup window. It has been working great on a couple of popups I like to always keep on the bottom of my screen.
on opening folder ThisFolder
my SetPopUp(ThisFolder)
end opening folder
on moving folder window for ThisFolder
my SetPopUp(ThisFolder)
end moving folder window for
on SetPopUp(ThisFolder)
tell application "Finder"
if popup of window of folder ThisFolder is false then
activate
-- in the following line you can determine the window view
-- choices are: icon, small icon, name
set view of window of folder ThisFolder to name
set spatial view arrangement of window of folder ThisFolder to arranged by name
set zoomed of window of folder ThisFolder to true
set popup of window of folder ThisFolder to true
set pulled open of window of folder ThisFolder to false
end if
end tell
end SetPopUp

My memories of System 7 are dim like the flashing green glow of my Powerbook LED whilst it is sleeping. But for Colter Reed and the Mac lab he supervises, it's a daily activity.
One of those activities that often confuses a new Mac user is the "Eject" command, which leaves a "Ghost of Floppies Past" on the desktop. This simple edit removes System 7's ability to leave those haunting icons.
1. Open a copy of the Finder in Resedit and find the fmnu resources.
2. Open ID #1255.
3. Starting at offset 0x47 you should find the four-digit code "seje". Replace this with "sput"
4. Save your work and replace the original Finder with the new one and Restart.
And presto! Ejecting a disk (both from the menu and Cmd-E) won't leave the ghosted icon any more.
This probably works with 7.6.x, but I haven't tried (since I don't have and all...)
Peter McHugh has stumbled upon something interesting. He has created a giant MOSS replacement - and it works. The READ ME provides a simple addition to the normal ResExcellence edit.
I was surprised after installing it that the text PICTS and progress bars are in a new, but appropriate position. Assuming the large PICT resource doesn't cause problems for readers, this could open a whole new are for startup pictures - not quite a MOSS, not quite a StartupScreen. If you install it and have problems, let me know.
Spring is in the air, and that must get the creative juices flowing. How else can you explain the recent flood of User Contributions?
Based on the Wired cover picture of the Apple logo ringed by a crown of thorns, Scott Lahteine has submitted a MOSS and matching StartupScreen.
Michael Dicker has tweaked the original open source galapagos to his taste and included an extension to add a matching spinning cursor.
If the thought of a giant MOSS has you hiding under a bed, take a look at the three other MOSS submissions from Peter McHugh.
Peter included an ATM replacement.
And finally, if you liked the movie "The Matrix", you'll want to take a look at six new Netscape splash screens submitted by Marla Erwin.

Messy, messy, messy! Sure I have 30 icons on my desktop, but the rest of you should really be a little neater! Actually, I'm more concerned about the 3% that only have your had disk and Trash can. That can't be healthy.
This week's Polling Place question was suggested by Cotten Kelsh.
After visiting ResExcellence and picking the perfect edit to augment your System, which editor do you use? ResEdit or Resorcerer?
There is a lone resource editor for BeOS, Resourcer (not to be confused with Resorcerer). It has been updated to version 1.5.
Rumors say a new high powered graphics app is also coming for the BeOS called Photohop (not to confused with PhotoShop), to be closely followed by a web browser called Internet Exploring (not to be confused with Internet Explorer). :)
Nick Osborn sent this great tip to customize your Chooser color:
The edit for putting the utility pattern back in OS 8 didn't effect the Chooser. I poked around and realized the window color could be changed with dctb ID -15904, the only ID, by adjusting the "Content" color. While this doesn't allow an actual pattern, I was able to match it to my desktop pattern by turning on "Use Color Picker" in the DLOG menu. I find Apple's Digital Color Meter to be an indispensable tool in this kind of work.
It's time for that warm tingly feeling you get when viewing User Contributions:
Lauri Kieksi has submitted his collection of editor icons for ResEdit.
A quirky little Netscape splash is available from Organized Bambino.
Peter McHugh has been busy updating some MOSS submissions to display MacOS 8.6. Here at the first two, previous creations by Michael Dicker and Akeem Williams.
Akeem has submitted a blue stylized "About this Mac" replacement. Be sure to check out his interface site, Creative Box.
A tangerine splash screen was created by William Marler for Outlook Express.

500MHz iMacs below cost! At Smalldog.com

There have been several questions asked about ResExcellence and the RC5-64 Challenge. The program you use to check the keys and crack the code uses about 500k of RAM. You do not need to always be connected to the internet. What I do is change the default number of blocks buffered from 10 to 50. While I update everyday, the extra blocks give me some breathing room if I forget a day. At work, I have a Linux box that runs 24/7. Its buffer is set to 99 blocks. This gets it through the weekend and I can upload the finished blocks on Monday.
Generally, the client is always running hidden in the background, though I will quit it when playing Quake3 (which rocks). Other than that, I don't feel the load on my computer.
Why have a team ResExcellence!, why not join team Evangelista? Because then it wouldn't be team ResExcellence! ;)
In the stats box on the side of this page, I post daily updates on the team's position in the rankings. We just broke 4000 and are climbing more than 100 rankings each day. As we get closer to the top, it will get much harder, but given an infinite amount of time, we will win! (and a monkey will write a great novel.)
Regarding the RC5 client and MacOS 8.6, there is this from MacInTouch:
[Peter DiCamillo] "I saw your mention of the DCTI RC5/DES client in the Mac OS 8.6 special report. I'm one of the coders of the client. The client does not check the version of Open Transport. However, it does require more memory when running under 8.6. I and the other members of the coding team have found that the network problems are eliminated under 8.6 by adding about 30K to the memory allocation. There are speed issues running under 8.6 which we are actively working on. Also, the next version will not issue a warning about not being tested on that version of the OS."
So if you haven't done so already, read Michael Dicker's instructions for downloading and configuring the client software, then join the team! You may win $1000 for yourself, and a $1000 for charity.
Ilicon has posted a set of 17 cute icons (they look great on the kid's iMac!), and dozens of little cartoon bullets to spice up your documents or web pages.
Many readers have asked why I don't post a version of the edit to make Apple's DriveSetup format more third party drives.
The edits on ResExcellence should always be performed on a copy. This way if there is a mistake, a quick reboot from a CD will let you fix the messiest System hack. But by editing Drive Setup, it's conceivable (though admittedly not likely) that you could loose data.
If you do find yourself in the position of having a third party drive that cannot be formatted with Drive Setup, Cogco Software has posted detailed instructions on how to modify DriveSetup.
Michele Zundo adds to the topic regarding Drive Setup and Removable cartridges:
I always had driver problems with my SyJet Cartridge (FWB Toolkit/SyQuest Utilities/Silverlining etc..)
Unfortunately, the SyQuest SyJet SCSI (1.5 Gb) that I use is not supported by Drive Setup (1.7.2). And I noticed that using Apple drive give usually more compatibility.
This is strange because using the PC-Exchange (2.X) Control Panel, I can easily mount the SyJet (Remov. Driver Version 3.0.2) so I thought that 3.0.x and later must infact work with the SyJet and that the only reason DriveSetup does not allow me to format/partition the SyJet is that the name SyJet is not in the list of supported hardware inside DriveSetup.
Using ResEdit, I found out that Drive Setup supports other SyQuest drivers. Duplicating the resources related to EZ135 (the most recent SyQuest drive present in the list) and renaming it SyJet-S allowed me to partition and format the SyJet natively.
This might work for other drivers as well.
Still the Finder does not allow me to format DOS but only HFS and HFS+.
Thanks to Jeff Whitten of the PowerList, I have a link from Accelerate Your Mac! that shows you how to reassign the Enter key on a Powerbook keyboard to a Command key.
Justin Copeland has added an Internet Explorer Splash screen to his collection of Gothic replacements. (MOSS, ATM, Netscape Splash)
Ian Jungling has submitted 5 splash screens for an array of Microsoft products that feature his favorite "actress", Vicca.
Kevin Knopp likes the default MOSS, but he thought the text items looked a little boring, so he submitted these replacements. In addition, he sent a replacement splash screen for Better Telnet.
A beautiful brushed metal MOSS with text elements has been submitted by Erik Veland.
Here's a new spin on the Apple Menu. This version created by Kevin Barry is invisible until you select the menu, then the white Apple shows itself. Kevin also submitted a Trashman empty/full icon set.
"What's up at MacPlaza?"
The cry can be heard from around the world. Is our favorite site off the air? No! Not at all. The webmaster of MacPlaza has a temporary job transfer to a nation where internet access is as likely as Bill Gates selling iMacs at Best Buy.
He had hoped the net access would be more readily available, at a more reasonable cost, but have no fear. His burden is large, but his friends are many...

At long last, and after much gently prodding by many contributors, there are now download counters on the most recent User Contributions. Watch for a bunch of new files on Friday.
Honorable Mentions: High school student Matthew Cone has a nice web site called MacInstruct that posts helpful tutorials and tidbits on all things Mac. It's part of the impressive MacTeen network - a group of sites created and maintained by some amazingly talented students. When I was their age, my biggest concern was getting gas money!
The Wired Shark is Frank Ryan's new site that cracks the case on Powerbooks to get at the nitty-gritty guts.
The new Linux.com has opened its doors. There's tons of good info there for users on all experience levels.
Thirteen year-old MacRulz has created a drag-and-drop AppleScript application to simplify the process of assigning another email client to Netscape.
While Larry Kearl offers the raw scripts:

register protocol "CSOm" for protocol "mailto" --Eudora
end tell
OR

register protocol "MSNM" for protocol "mailto" -- Outlook Express
end tell

The mysterious being known as phydeaux has submitted a new patch for AOL Instant Messenger version 2.01.663 that modifies the following:
- removes ads and AOL buttons from the buddy list
- matches button sizes between Online and List Setup panes
- minimizes the Sign On Status window
Kevin Patfield submitted this AppleScript:
Stickies are excellent for leaving "to-do" notes for things to do next time you use your Mac. Unfortunately, if you just put an alias of the Stickies application in your Startup folder (or check "Launch at System Startup" in its preferences), you are greeted by a blank sticky if you start with no stickies present. The following script avoids this by first checking whether the stickies file is empty or not.
on run
tell application "Finder"
activate
set theSize to size of file "Stickies File" of preferences folder
if theSize > 6 then
tell application "Stickies"
activate
end tell
end if
end tell
end run

After seeing this week's Polling Place, ResExcellence contributor Anthony Saxton is embarrested to admit he has over 50 icons on his desktop spread across two monitors! He even has a tabbed folder called "Desk Stuff" that contains 38 additional items that were once cluttering the main screen!
How often does he take a broom to these 32x32 pixel scraps of trash? Never. Rather than delete anything, he burns CD's of the stuff most of us would toss! And if you think he's a pack rat on the desktop, you should see his garage! :)
The patch to replace the rainbow Apple menu icon with a black one has been updated by Simon Steiner. If you are spooked by patchers, Simon also includes the ResEdit resources.
Desktop Icon Manager (DIM) v1.3 is an AppleScript that restores the icon positions between screen resolution switches. it can be configured to automatically do this at startup/shutdown too. Best of all, it's free and not only do you get the application, but also the script so you can muck around if you like.
More on Icons. In System 7, the computer's icons were located in the System suitcase. With MacOS 8.0 they moved into the Appearance Extension.
MacOS 8.5 brought us 32 bit icons, but the trade off was that the ability to customize them was greatly deminished. These beautiful icons are much more difficult to create and modify. Inthe future, when there is an editor available, it will look more like PhotoShop than ResEdit!
Do you long for the "Good Old Days"? Would you be willing to trade millions of colors to be able to easily change and edit your System icons under MacOS 8.5? This edit tells you how.

Netscape Communicator 4.6 has been released. The first thing you may notice after launching the new version, is that the menus are a boring, flat white. While it is disappointing the programmers didn't use this opportunity to update the menu definition (MDEF). You can do it yourself.
- Download this 15k resource file from the Mercutio MDEF web site and open it in ResEdit.
- Open a copy of Netscape Communicator 4.6 in ResEdit.
- Select all the resources from the Mercutio MDEF (Command-A)
- Paste them into Netscape (Command-V)!
- Select Yes to the dialog to replace the same ID numbers
- Save your work and quit ResEdit.
The new version of Netscape is ready to use. The menus will now have the Apple Platinum appearance.
Use these Previous Edits to further modify Netscape 4.6
Cletus Waldman explained how to have Netscape use Apple's faster Java Virtual Machine (MRJ 2.1.2) for running embedded applets. Visit the Mozilla.org website to read more, then download the MRJ Plugin. Place the Plugin and library files into Netscape's plugin folder.
Unfortunately, Eric Albert says this will have a limited effect:
(The Plugin) only uses MRJ for the rare cases in which the applet in question is referenced via an <embed> tag, which occurs somewhere around never (only on sites that specifically code to Sun's Java plugin, which is rarely seen beyond certain controlled business environments). For all other applets -- 99.9% of the ones online-- Communicator 4.5, 4..51, and 4.6 will still continue to use their truly abominable virtual machines.
David Arthur discovered this when looking into Sherlock 2.1
I've found that the advertisement in Sherlock 2.1 seems to be controlled by a file in the Preferences folder called "Sherlock Default". Its data fork contains a description, in basically the same format as a Sherlock plugin, of the URL to download for the ad, so presumably the ad could be changed or deleted by modifying this file.
Resex: I haven't tried this myself, since the banner doesn't bother me, but it looks as if the plugin code is also in the TEXT ID 1000 resource of the Sherlock 2.1 application, so both areas may need patching.
About 60% of ResExcellence readers are from the North American continent. That's not a surprise, but i am a little disappointed at how few readers are located in South America and Africa.
By the way, I'd like to welcome the 10% who are from another planet. It's good to see that you have chosen the Mac as your interplanetary computing platform.
My computer desktop often resembles my real desktop - a scattered mess of documents, clippings, and trash! Is yours the same? This weeks Polling Place asks, "How many icons are on your desktop right now?"

Pssst... Hey buddy. Want a chance at winning a thousand bucks? Every now and then, a visitor to ResExcellence will be randomly chosen to participate in a MacAddict Network questionnaire. If you're one of the lucky ones, you may win the top prize of $1000.
After reading the list of edits I performed on MacOS 8.6, Jean-Jacques Cortes reminded me that a program called AppearanceHopper can make many of the changes without ResEdit.
That's true, and the same can be said of 8Tuner, but I look at resource editing like mowing the lawn. Some people use a lawn service, and some cut it themselves. I like the feeling of accomplishment I have when viewing the neat lines of the mower's wheels after I have bagged the grass on a Saturday afternoon. :)
Tips on using the rc5des client with MacOS 8.6.
MacFixit has a few reader comments on getting the RC5-64 client to work under MacOS 8.6.
And Lee Voegele adds, "I run the RC5-64 client too and had the problem where I couldn't update my blocks. I increased RC5-64 client's memory to 1024k, and it works fine now."
Ryan Wilkerson says the iNax toilets are gone, maybe at the request of Apple. In a statement of apology, the artist displays his shaved head - cut into the shape of the Apple Logo!
I can see the lawyer's letter now...
To Whom It May Concern,
It has come to our attention that your head is infringing upon Apple's intellectual property. Please remove it immediately.
Apple is playing "Find the Icons" with us again! Ben Hawkey says, "There have been significant alterations to the ROM file in OS 8.6. A lot of stuff has been moved out into the System Resources and System file. e.g.. There are virtually no icns resources left, so to edit the Apple icon or the alias icon, you now have to edit the System Resource file on my iMac.
If you want to perform the edit to shorten the 2 minute MountCheck delay, Jon Mayes says the boot resource has also been moved back in to the System suitcase.
And to make matters worse, it appears the B&W G3 ROM file is different from the iMac ROM. Generally, if you try to perform an edit on the ROM file and it doesn't work, perform it instead on the original location - either the System suitcase or System Resources. And always work on copies!
You can splash a new look on your browser with this two screens. Bill Marler created a good looking replacement for Explorer, while Jason Bissey borrowed from Michelangelo's moment of creation for his Netscape splash screen.

I've been thinking...
The worst part about upgrading to MacOS 8.6, is redoing all my resource edits!
Do you think if we asked them nicely, Apple would incorporate ResExcellence's Previous Edits as an install option under Sonata?
Here is a list of edits I performed to complete my install of MacOS 8.6 (the ResExcellence version!):
As the countdown to Star Wars continues, IconPLUS has released Star Wars - Episode I Icons Vol. 1.
Do you think if you took all the Star Wars icons, from all the different icon artists, and placed them on the desktop at the same time, they would wage a Myth-like battle of epic proportions?
Under the new Sherlock 2.1, until you select a link in the results window, you are presented with an Apple Store Banner.
Do you think it will be long before every aspect of the OS is sponsored? Already Aladdin displays a little banner in the progress window while unstuffing a file. Some future possibilities for dialog windows are:
"Please wait while ejecting this floppy disk. Before you insert your next floppy, why not visit Symantec for our latest virus protection software?"
"This Trash Empty is brought to you by Iomega. If you're deleting files because your hard disk is full, consider buying a Zip drive!"
"This menu selection could have been made easier by using Dragon Systems' Voice Recognition Software. Quit mousing around!"
I think we may have a small a problem! After upgrading to MacOS 8.6, the rc5-64 mac Client is complaining about the system version. While my copy works fine after dismissing the offending dialog box, another reader stated he could no longer fetch blocks. Let me know if you are having this problem. In yesterday's totals, Team ResExcellence! was ranked 1881.
[update] Readers report that deleting the rc5des preferences, re-entering the info, and assigning more RAM clears up the fetch/flush problem under MacOS 8.6. You still get the dialog complaining aboutOS compatibility.
8Tuner, the utility to change your System icons, MOSS, and command keys, has been thoughtfully updated with fixes for MacOS 8.6
Do you think a black Apple would good in your menu bar? Simon Steiner has created one that is yours to download from his web site. You can install it using this edit.
In addition to great looking icons, The PseudoRoom thought it would be nice to post some desktop pictures too!
Do you think it's time you upgraded from MacOS 8.1?
Paul Albert is ready, but he has the following question:
I'm going to 8.5.1 and would like to import the desktop patterns from 8.1 into 8.5.1., also keeping the 8.5.1 patterns.
There are at least two ways to do this. The first doesn't involve ResEdit (boring!). Under 8.1, open the Appearance Manager and drag the patterns you want to keep to the desktop, creating PICT clippings.
After updating, drag these clippings into the appropriate Desktop Tab in the Appearance Control Panel.
If you want to use ResEdit (Yea!), open the Desktop Pattern Preferences in the Preferences folder from MacOS 8.1. Copy the ppat resources to the clipboard.
Open a copy of the "Custom Desktop Patterns" in the Preferences Folder under MacOS 8.5 and higher, and paste in the ppat resources. If you get the dialog asking how you want to handle duplicate ID number, select the Unique option.
Eric Prentice, webmaster of MacTips and a man who is always thinking, has created a page to track the Apple software packages that have been updated for MacOS 8.6. There are already 10!
There is a new search engine that appears to be Mac friendly! Google is currently in beta stage, but this new engine is remarkable in the accuracy of the sites it returns. They have posted instructions on how to make Google the default search engine in the major browsers for several platforms. And I thought I had read that they have already posted three versions of Sherlock plugins!

Based on last week's question, about 40% of you like to keep your Application Menu closed. I imagine the reason is menu bar real estate.
One of the benefits of running ResExcellence is receiving nice reader email from around the world. Just for fun, this week's Polling Place asks, "On which continent do you live?". I hope you paid attention in geography class!
Long time ResExcellence contributor, Michael Dicker, has picked up his sword and is ready to lead ReExcellence into the battle to be the first team to crack the RC5-64 encrypted code!
Hosted by distributed.net, the RC5-64 challenge is currently using over 100,000 computers around the world to find the key to a secret message. The "why" of it all can be found in their FAQ.
Read Michael's instructions on downloading and configuring the client software (easy), and join team ResExcellence! (real easy)
If your computer cracks the code, you'll win $1000. ResExcellence will also get $1000 which I will donate to the Chicago Foundation to Cure Epilepsy.
Michael and I have been crunching numbers for a couple of weeks in preparation, and we're slowly working our way up in the standings. With the addition of fellow ResExer's, we hope to break into the top 100 teams.
Take a look at our current position in the standings. If you have any questions, let me know. In the meantime, start checking keys!
iMacolor is a new control panel from Hide Itoh, one of the Mac's best icon artists. The program lets you select from a popup list a replacement icons for the Apple Menu and Trash can. The colors are based on Apple's iMacs.
I know is seems like everything now comes in the new iMac colors, but this is ridiculous!
|
The only event that has been more pervasive on the net than iMacs is the imminent release of "Star Wars Episode I"!
Epoch Icons has released two new sets with a total of over fifty 32 bit icons featuring the characters in Episode I.
With the release of MacOS 8.6, Anthony Saxton has updated the edit to modify Apple's CD/DVD driver to mount third party drives. Version 1.2.2 is included in MacOS 8.6.
After reading the Interview with the DS Group, Todd Johnson wanted to mention that he has already created a Kaleidoscope Scheme based on South Park! You'll have to dig around his web site for it though, I think he's trying to hide it from lawyers! :)
Be sure to also view Todd's collection of Star Wars' desktop pictures. (There it is again, Star Wars!)
Daniel from waferbaby tipped me off that the Macintosh coders at Mozilla.com have been busy! Mozzila (M6) has already been released before I've sufficiently crashed M5!
If you have Quicktime 4 installed, you can go to waferbaby and view a twisted Pixhell streaming comic. Start at Episode Zero and work your way up.
I missed this earlier, so here it is incase you missed it too! A new version of Help to Icon is available. This beefed-up version not only lets you assign an icon to the Help menu, but now adds options for the FaxMenu and Print menu!

SPECIAL REPORT: An interview with Dorian Weisel of the DS Group - the first company to release an Appearance Theme file.
How did they do it, why, and what does the user interface future hold. (Continued...)
A couple of browser stories today.
- iCab has been updated to version 1.5 with a slew of bug fixes.
- The next developmental version of Netscape (M5) is available from their ftp servers.
- Sun released version 3 of the all Java browser, HotJava (requires Apple's MJR 2.1.2).
They are all worth a look if you're interested in seeing what options the future holds!
After seeing the recent collection of AppleScripts to control the Appearance Switcher, Will Cosgrove wrote to let me know about a free application he co-authored called Dock Manager.
Not only can it change the scroll arrows, application switcher, and keyboard switching; it can also manage your Internet search site plugins!.
Everything but the plugin manager is done using Applescripts, so you won't have to worry about conflicts and compatibility.
Pete Mellows has removed the "run-only" restriction from Web Startup 1.2, the AppleScript application to open multiple browser pages, so feel free to download it, take a look at the code , and customize it!
Jason Wiggins liked the look of the new QuickTime Player so much, he incorporated it into a new MOSS!

John Dwight uses this simple AppleScript Folder Action to protect any documents he places in the folder. The script contains a simple error catching routine:
on adding folder items to parent_folder after receiving added_items
try

set locked of files of parent_folder to true
end tell
on error x
tell application "Finder"
display dialog x
end tell
end try
end adding folder items to
-- Due to current Folder Actions implementation, the script runs only when Dragging-and-Dropping files into the open scripted folder. I haven't yet found a way to lock newly added files to a parent folder from the Save dialog. Use at your own risk and enjoy. John Dwight dwight@ic.si.edu

Ilicon has released new icons that match some desktop patterns you can find in the "Surprise Sack".
USB Overdrive 1.1 has been released by Alessandro Levi Montalcini. The biggest new feature is that clicking a joystick or mouse button while in the USB Overdrive control panel, now selects the appropriate button in the device controls list, making it easier to properly map the joystick buttons.
In addition, 1.1 also adds:
- Added a cool Auto Scroll feature that doesn't require a mouse wheel to enable mouse-driven scrolling.
- New application-specific mouse speed settings can override the Mouse control panel and speed up the cursor as much as you need.
- Added or improved support for Logitech and Kensington wheel mice, CH Products and Saitek joysticks and gamepads, and the P.I. Engineering Ymouse adapter.
- Automatic joystick calibration now handles all kinds of poorly calibrated devices.
- Added support for two additional mouse buttons and an option to choose which button is assigned to the mouse wheel.
- The Options menu now displays the list of captured devices and provides some basic information about them.
- Fixed a bunch of minor problems.
Paul Hollingworth created four sets of tabs for Apple's Control Strip. Three are dark, hi-tech, and one is iMac Bondi Blue!
Toren Valimir, a student at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, has sketched and scanned a human form. The result can be seen in his iMaculate MOSS. His complimentary Kaleidoscope schemes are here.
Next up on Celebrity DeathMatch Wrestling: QuickTime Player IV versus MoviePlayer III !
The latest beta of Quicktime 4b22 is available from Apple's servers, but Harold Bakker doesn't like the look or transport controls on the new QuickTime Player.
As today's guest editor, he provides an easy way for you to keep using MoviePlayer as your default media tool. Don't worry, you'll still have the QuickTime Player if you need it.
After completing this edit, You will have the original transport controls, and when you resize a movie window, you won't be left with the huge QuickTime Player border. (Continued...)

There goes the neighborhood! ResExcellence is very proud to announce that it is now a member of the MacAddict Network!
Once again, this honor must be shared with all the readers who have submitted helpful tips, edit ideas, and User Contributions. I may be the one doing the html coding, but ResExcellence has become a community comprised of much more than a web page.
Visit the MacAddict Network home page to get a quick summary of what's happening on the member sites, and around the net.
Drew Smith was reader number 500,000 over the weekend! As expected, many of you sent good-natured fake screenshots, but I'm too clever for that! I modified the counter cgi to display a special message to the true winner.

Drew has scored himself a copy of Apple Confidential, the new book by Owen Linzmayer full of behind the scenes tidbits on the history of Apple.
David Dixon sent me a picture proving he was reader 500,001. Unfortunately, he gets nothing. But being the eternal optimist, David looks forward to being the 1,000,000th viewer!
(Maile is a leaf from Hawaii and the name of our new dog.)
What a surprise! Charcoal isn't the dreaded font that I thought it was. While it wasn't the most popular in last week's poll, it was a close second to Gadget, followed by Techno. Unfortunately, "I hate them all" was number four!
Several people asked where Espy was! That font family was never released as part of the MacOS. Originally, it was an eWorld font. (anybody remember eWorld!).
Apple spends many man-hours on the small little additions that make our OS the best, but I wonder how many users take advantage of them.
This week's Polling Place deals with one of those little enhancements, "Do you usually display the long or short Application Menu?".
Here's an AppleScript by Michael Askew that demonstrates a lot of simple coding techniques. This script will quit all applications, except hidden processes, the Finder, and any programs in the "Excluded" list:
property excludedApps : {"VersaTile Pro"}
--The Finder and background processes are
--not affected because their file
type is not APPL
tell application "Finder"
set theProcs to every process whose (file type is "APPL" and name is not in excludedApps)
end tell
repeat with x in theProcs
set appName to name of x
tell application appName to quit
end repeat

Want to trim your time to connect to the net by a quarter second? Aaron Walker offers this modem init tidbit:
Add s11=45 to any script, near the end, and you'll get speed dial mode, which doesn't actually add any speed, but it sounds way neater.
Wigwam Software has updated their patch to customize ICQ.
ICQ Facelift includes brand new icons, sounds, About Box and to top it all: a fully fledged ScreenFont, and Borders.
Generous readers have contributed more User Contributions!
Chris Paveglio has created an MOSS and About this Mac replacement featuring a seldom seen picture of our favorite spin-meister, Steve Jobs.
Johnny Ring has a thing for Zombies, so watch out when you look at this Netscape replacement splash screen.
Cotten Kelsh has spiced up his copy of ResEdit with some new resource icons.
