It's amazing the items you find in the basement! Pictured on the right is my Powerbook G3 and my old Commodore 128. The older computer is screaming along on a 6500 series chip at a blistering 1 megahertz clock speed. The operating system is cp/m and the application currently running is WordStar 3.3.

It's just like riding a bicycle, I was able to launch WordStar, open an old document (my first resume) and get to work.

And this isn't some frivolous exercise either, I plan to use the Commodore as a Telnet front end for my MacOS Server; freeing up a monitor and keyboard. :)

Aladdin Systems has updated Stuffit Expander to version 5.1.3. What's different?

From the "Read Me":

StuffIt Expander versions 5.1, 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 automatically set the Internet Preferences to map StuffIt archives and Private File files to their parent (creator) applications, StuffIt Deluxe and Private File.

This update no longer sets a user's Internet control panel preferences to automatically expand StuffIt (.sit) or Private File(tm) (.pf) files.

It's a good thing that the Previous Edit to do this was just for educational purposes, because it has now been rendered obsolete! We all owe a tip-of-the-hat to David Sholkoff for bringing this problem to Aladdin's attention.

Victor Nystad submitted a few more simple AppleScript examples to demonstrate control of the Application Switcher.

on run
tell application "Application Switcher"
set visible of palette to true
set orientation of palette to vertical
set button ordering of palette to alphabetical
set frame visible of palette to true
set names visible of palette to true
set position of palette to upper right
set icon size of palette to small
end tell
end run

on run
tell application "Application Switcher"
set visible of palette to true
set orientation of palette to horizontal
set button ordering of palette to reverse launch order
set frame visible of palette to false
set names visible of palette to false
set position of palette to lower right
set icon size of palette to small
end tell
end run

You can find all the applicable commands by using the Script Editor to open the dictionary of the Application Switcher' extension.

I have customized this script and stuck a copy in my Apple Menu and Startup Folder to keep that panel how I want it! Often after playing a game that switches the monitor resolution, the Application palette is in a wacky part of the screen in a funky configuration.

A reader recent wrote to ask that I organize the Sloppy AppleScript Archive, but if I did, then it wouldn't be sloppy!

Victor also asked if it was possible to change the default name of a new "untitled folder".

Yes you can! The test is stored in STR# 4500 as shown below. Open a copy of the Finder in ResEdit to change it!

Shortly after after our one year anniversary, ResExcellence is approaching its 500,000th main page served. Counting the Previous Edits and User Contributions, the site has served over a million pages.

Who will be the 500k reader! While it may not happen until next week, if you're the lucky reader, take a snapshot of the bottom counter (command-shift-capslock-4), email it to me, and you will receive a way-cool prize.

It's easier to get time on the Palomar Telescope than to spend a few minutes on my kid's iMac, but I have finally confirmed that the MacOS ROM file contains the location for the previous edit to remove the 2 minute MountCheck delay.

So if you've had trouble getting that edit to work on an iMac or Blue G3, this should solve your problem. If not, please let me know.

Interested in learning to program on the Mac, or just looking for a refresher course? MacTech has posted two large tutorials on-line. The C section contains 23 chapters, and the Pascal section is hefty too!

Simon Steiner says:

If you use iCab and go to some sites, it will say your browser doesn't support frames. They use html which recognizes your browser and if you have NN or IE 4 or later.

If you have anything else, it thinks you don't support frames. Fix this by changing your browser ID in Identity/Proxey preference to Netscape Navigator 4.5 or Internet Explorer/4.5.

Time to appreciate the fine User Contributions submitted by ResExcellence readers:

If you remember the dark ages of MacTCP and ConfigPPP, then you know what a godsend FreePPP was. But now that Apple has gotten their PPP access software up to speed, FreePPP seems to have lost a little luster. Even the never-ending comp.sys.mac.comm newsgroup thread, "FreePPP vs. OT/PPP" has disappeared!

While there have been no updates for over a year, I still like the way FreePPP handles multiple locations and dialups better that the saved configurations of remote Access/PPP, but as you can see from the numbers, less than 25% of Mac users are still using it. Two thirds have made the switch to Apple's software.

There was much groaning and complaining when Apple adopted Charcoal as the system font. The popularity of the previous edit to add system fonts attests to the fact the users still haven't warmed up to Charcoal.

Still, I'm sure Charcoal is used by lots of people, and the other new Apple fonts have a following.

Based on his own curiosity, Jonathan Ploudre suggested this week's Polling Place question, "Which is your favorite Apple font?".

Many readers wrote to mention that Apple's Tech Info Library addresses the problem of selecting the Desktop as a default folder.

Read the entire article for more information, but in a nutshell, holding down the Option key while selecting Desktop from the Shortcuts button selects the Desktop folder.

Macintosh computer consultant, Christian Boyce shows how to assign proportional scroll bars with AppleScript:

tell application "Appearance"
set scroll box style to "prop"
end tell

I modified John Gunnison's previous script to add dialogs and confirmations:

on run

set letsloop to true -- set loop on by default
set theDialogText to "Type of scroll bar?"

tell application "Appearance"
repeat while letsloop is true
display dialog theDialogText buttons {"Fixed", "Proportional"}

if the button returned of result is "fixed" then
set scroll box style to fixed
display dialog "Scroll bars are 'Fixed'"
set letsloop to false -- stops loop
else
if the
button returned of result is "Proportional" then
set scroll box style to proportional
display dialog "Scroll bars are 'Proportional'"
set letsloop to false

end if
end if
end repeat
-- end loop
quit application "Appearance"
end tell
en
d run

The Infamous SITPatch. A short time ago, David Sholkoff posted a ResCompare patch to address what even Aladdin Systems called an aggressive approach to setting Internet Preferences.

As a learning experience, many of you probably wondered what resources were involved in a patch like that.

Guest editor, J. D. Stephensen has prepared for ResExcellence readers an edit to demonstrate how to recreate the SITPatch. This is for your reading and educational pleasure only since performing the edit is in violation of the Stuffit License and you would be required to remove Stuffit Expander 5.1.2 from your hard drive. Here's something interesting I noticed after reformatting my hard disk and restoring. As expected, upon the next launch of Eudora, the program asked me to select a default folder for my attachments.

Generally, I select the Desktop Folder in all my applications for downloads, so imagine my surprise when the latest beta of Eudora (which now supports Apple's Navigation Services) wouldn't let me choose it!

I tried it in two other programs that support Navigation Services and the outcome was the same - you can't select the Desktop Folder as a default destination.

Still not sure what I mean? Open the Internet control panel and select the Web tab. Under the section "Download Files to:" try and select the Desktop Folder. Opps, problem!

Am I missing something?

Just after midnight, I heard a loud thud on the roof top. When I climbed up there to investigate, I discovered that AppleScript Man had left me some coded goodies in a lead-lined container!

Collected from around the world, I present them to you...

John Gunnison takes our recent scroll bar AppleScript, and adds several new features. This version presents a dialog box to select the style of arrows, then follows up with confirming dialog.

This simple script demonstrates great flow control for the beginner to study:

on run

set letsloop to true -- set loop on by default
set theDialogText to "
Choose the style of Scroll Bar Arrows..."

tell application "
Appearance" -- opens control panel
repeat while letsloop is true -- opens loop
display dialog theDialogText buttons {"
Single", "Bottom-Right", "Double"}

if the button returned of result is "
Single" then -- single
set scroll bar arrow style to "
sngl" -- set arrow style
display dialog "
Arrows set to Single" -- confirmation
set letsloop to false -- stops loop
else
if the button returned of result is "
Bottom-Right" then -- bottom-right
set scroll bar arrow style to "
next" -- set arrow style
display dialog "
Arrows set to Double on bottom right corners" -- confirmation
set letsloop to false -- stops loop
else
if the button returned of result is "
Double" then -- double
set scroll bar arrow style to «constant ****dubl» -- set arrow style
display dialog "
Arrows set to Double" -- confirmation
set letsloop to false -- stops loop
end if -- end double
end if -- end bottom-right
end if -- end single
end repeat -- end loop
quit application "
Appearance" -- closes control panel
end tell
end
run

Download the compiled script.

If you have URL's that need to be converted between Netscape's and Explorer's format, Rob Henerey recommends "Micha´s LinkConverter 1.0.1". These AppleScripts use TexEdit to translate your URL files from one format to the other.

Peter Mellow has updated Web Startup. This AppleScript application launches the default browser (iCab, Explorer, or Netscape) and opens a new window for each URL file in the "Web Startup Folder".

Did you get good grades in your German language class? You'll wish you had when you look at the collection of patches that Michael Dicker has created on his web site.

  • changes for 8.5.1 System Resource to use the new blue Apple
  • patch for the US Keylayout to use Numlook Key as Forwarddelete.
  • and many more...

The MacOS X CD's arrived from Apple and now my Powerbook boasts the following operating Systems: (Isn't being a geek great!)

Watch for further tidbits on my OSX experiences in the future.

If you would like addition reading on OSX, Stepwise is a great NeXT site that now also covers OSX. (They have a great FAQ section.)

Then there's Apple's OS X Server site. It's a little lean on real information, mostly marketing hype, but you'll do much better at Apple's Technical Information Library. Search for "MacOS X Server".

phydeaux has updated the patcher for the latest AOL Instant Messenger - version 2.01.664. The patch slims down the Buddy list window by removing the graphics, and tweaks a few other window settings.

This just in: Quicktime 4pr1 has been released by Apple! Remember, you heard it here first! :)

The install procedure is interesting. You download a small install application (376k) which when run, downloads the remainder of Quicktime's files from the net, and then completes the installation based of the options selected.

It's an efficient way of initially delivering an update because you only download the needed components, but the negative is that you have to be connected to the internet to complete an install, and only the original installation application is left on the hard disk. Every time you reinstall QT4, you have to download the files again! Hopefully, we'll have the option of downloading a single file when the final version is finished.

It's confirmed! If you have an iMac or B&W G3, the computer uses the 32 bit icons in the MacOS ROM file and not the System Resources file!

If you have been trying the following edits on those computers and have had no success, edit the MacOS ROM file instead:

Replace the Apple Menu Icon
Remove the Alias Arrow
How to Modify the new 32 bit System Icons

In addition, this edit may also be affected (looking into it):

Remove the 2 minute delay from the startup disk check

robot frog has been updated with new icons, desktop pictures, fonts, and more.

They're too big to be desktop patterns and too small for desktop pictures, but if you tile them on your desktop they look great! Propaganda for E has over 500 desktop tiles for you to download. I recommend you download all the volumes at once, then preview them in the provided html pages. This is really one of the best collections I've ever seen. (Thanks Slashdot)

To coincide with this weeks Polling Place question, Michael Dicker sent this tip to speedup your ARA Modem scripts.

Your modem scripts are located in the System Extensions folder in a folder called "Modem Scripts". The appropriate script is chosen in the Modem control panel.

Open a copy of the script for your modem in BBEdit Lite and replace all the "pause 5" with "pause 1" to speedup modem connects and disconnects.

I was adventurous and changed any pause XX to pause 1, so far no problems!

Happy little web surfers are we, the readers of ResExcellence! It looks like the majority spend between 2 to 3 hours per day on the net. If you're like me, that means more time online and less in front of the TV (or do you do both!).

The fact that 25% said more than 40 hours means two things: a lot of online professionals visit the site, or they mistook my question to mean how long they were connected. For example, at work, my computer is always connected to the internet, but I'm busy on the internet only a fraction of that time.

Laziness has kept me from switching the kid's iMac from FreePPP to Remote Access (OT/PPP). As I was entering a new dialup number over the weekend, I wondered how many people used one program versus the other.

So this week's Polling Place asks the question, "If you use a dialup account, do you use FreePPP or Remote Access?".

The fast paced world of software development has already rendered the AIM Ad removal patch obsolete on the newest beta. So if you want to lose the ads, patch version 2.0.531 and stick with it awhile. The author may update it for other betas, or you may have to wait for the final version before you see an updated patcher.

Several readers have had trouble editing the 32 bit icons in the "System Resources" file on iMacs and the new Blue & White G3's. I suspect the problem is somehow tied to the ROM file, but since my iMac patched fine, I'm looking for comments from readers.

HalfHill Software has been busy updating two utilities:

IconSwapper provides "Drag and Drop" Custom Icon creation and deletion.
Drag a file onto IconSwapper to change its Icon.
Option drag to "grab" an Icon; or use a dialog
to grab an icon or icns from any file or application.
It recognizes both the old and new 32 bit icons, and will
optionally let you save them in both formats. Version 1.1
also provides a fix for disk repair programs (e.g TechTool)
that set the custom Icon flag incorrectly.

FileMunger is sort of a swiss army knife of the most common
things that are done by drag and drop.
It'll let you

1) Add date stamps to files and folders.
"MyFile" -> "MyFile-10/28/99"
Many different formats are allowed.
2) Add, remove or change file extensions.
"MyFile.htm" -> "MyFile.html"
3) Change file Creator and Type codes.
"ttro ttxt" -> "TEXT ttxt" etc.

Tom Mulligan tweaked his AppleScript that allows you to select a window's scroll arrow style:

on run
tell application "Appearance"
start log
set ArrowStyle to (get scroll bar arrow style)
log ArrowStyle
if ArrowStyle = single then
set scroll bar arrow style to "next"
else if ArrowStyle = both at one end then
set scroll bar arrow style to "dubl"
else if ArrowStyle = «constant ****dubl» then
set scroll bar arrow style to "sngl"
end if
stop log
quit
end tell
end
run

Paste the above into the Script Editor and save it as an application. Everytime you run it, it will change the scroll arrows to one of three options. Keep launching it until you get the look you want!

(added to The Sloppy AppleScript Archive)

Want a peek at the next generation of Netscape's browser? Mozilla Mac M4 is available for download. To say it is barely usable would be generous, but it will give you an idea of how powerful and good looking version 5 will be when finished.

If you hunt around the resource folders, you'll find a couple of nice throbbers!

Michael Hurley had this to say about the NeoPlanet browser:

This is just a little note about NeoPlanet. It is not, in fact a new browser. It is a new interface for Internet Explorer 4. It looks kind of cool, but in my experience, it's very unstable. Also, don't try to resize the window while it's running, or you'll lose the skin for a few seconds and IE will show through. And you better not try to install it on a machine that doesn't already have IE on it, 'cause it doesn't distribute it's own copy. The program is a nifty toy, but the hype is a bit much at times. Just my experiences, though.

So I guess it's really just a control panel that adds "skins" to Internet Explorer. Still, it is interesting and would be a nice addition to the Mac platform (where I'm sure it will be much more stable! ) :)

I know a lot of the youngsters who read this page think I'm real cool and want be just like me when they grow up.

NeoPlanet is a web browser available for the Wintel platform.

A Macintosh version of NeoPlanet is currently in development. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail support@neoplanet.com.

This browser looks "Way-Cool". It supports skins and the web site already has dozens of them online. Add Kaleidoscope and you'll have one slick looking desktop! I installed it under VirtualPC to take a look, andthe way the menus drop down is impressive. They seems to zoom out from under the menu title. All faithful ResEx'ers should politely email these folks and let them know that you are definitely interested in having it available on the Mac platform.

I hate when this happens! I come up with an edit, and then a readers emails me with a totally obvious solution to the problem. This time I have Romain Schmelzer to thank: ;)

I have a comment about Assigning Sherlock to the search button in iCab: An obviously easier way exists to the described task. Locate Sherlock on your hard disk, and drag the application icon over the iCab: Preferences in the field Search.

That's all!

For the "help" system open the file called Index.html in the help folder. Copy the URL and paste it as Help site URL.

Thanks Romain. Next you'll try and tell me there is no Santa Claus!

phydeaux has created a patcher for the new AOL Instant Messenger 2.0 that does the following:

  • removes ads and AOL buttons from the buddy list
  • matches button sizes between Online and List Setup panes
  • minimizes the Sign On Status window

As you can see from the window on the left, it works quite well! Don't forget to take a look at the previous AIM edits:

-Change the default search engines in the popup "Find" button.
-Change the Sounds
-Change the Splash screen

Everyday Software has released a program is called QuickChange that will change any file's type/creator, even if the file doesn't have a resource fork. QuickChange also allows the user to create a customized list of file types/creators for quick and easy changing.

iCab pre1.4 has hit the street. This update incorporates many under-the-hood improvements, and one readily apparent addition - when quitting, iCab will check if downloads are still active. If necessary iCab will ask if it should really quit and abort the downloads.

While some may argue with me, the future of Netscape Communicator after the AOL acquisition is uncertain. Though it would seem in the best interests of the Mac platform to have browser competition, more people view this page in Communicator for Windows than iCab!

ResExcellence is often asked why it doesn't release the resource edits as ResCompare patches. The truth can be found in the unfortunate case of David Sholkoff's whose SITPatch which was removed from circulation yesterday at the request of Aladdin Systems on the strength of this phrase in their licensing agreement:

You may not rent or lease the Software, nor may you modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software. If you violate any part of this agreement, your right to use this Software terminates automatically and you must then destroy all copies of the Software in your possession.

Of course, based on this license, even if you edit the resources yourself, you violate the agreement. So if you have performed any of these ResExcellence Previous Edits...

...please turn yourself in to the appropriate authorities immediately to avoid the disgrace of an InterPol manhunt.

George Diveky, Certified Box-Head, is a new visitor to the site.

Let me be the first to say, "Hello George!"

(I try to welcome every new reader to ResExcellence, but the site has been growing so fast, it's difficult to give everyone the personalized recognition they deserve. So on behalf of ResExcellence, "Hello all you new readers!".)

Anyway, George was asking how to disable the Zoom Rectangles in MacOS 8.5. You can use this shared library called NoFinderZoom to zap those zooms!

As the owner of a Powerbook G3, I found this interesting. Sandor Sklar removed the black paint from the clamshell to give the portable a very "Delorian" look!

Fredrik Jonsson wondered:

In your artical "Creating Your Own Appearance Accents" you describe how to do this in Mac OS 8.x.

I have just updated from 8.1 to 8.5.1 and would like to continue using the "Olive" Accents from 8.1 in 8.5.1. Any tips how to do this?

Open your old Appearance Control panel in ResEdit and copy to the clipboard the CLUT ID's that you want to migrate to OS 8.5.

Under MacOS 8.5, in the System Folder-->Appearance-->Theme File folder is the Platinum Theme. Open it in ResEdit and paste in the clipboard. When the warning dialog pops up, select the button to create a new ID number. Save the file and your new Accent is ready to use.

BTW, if you're like Fredrik and just moved up to 8.5, don't routinely uncheck the "Shutdown Warning" in the General Controls panel. While it was a nusence in previous OS versions, it will now run a quick "Disk First Aid" check of the drive and repair any errors at the next restart. There is an annoying 2 minute delay after the scan which can be removed with this edit.

If you're a satisfied user of T-Minus Ten, now is the time to email author Mark Krenek and request new features for an upcoming version.

The primary feature being added is an expansion of the kinds of tasks you can create. Previously, you could only run AppleScripts or Finder items. This will be greatly expanded. Candidates for new types are:

  • Reminders
  • Inserting keystrokes
  • Quitting an application
  • Starting/sleeping/restarting/shutting down your computer
  • Mounting a network volume
  • Unmounting a volume
  • Other major features that I hope to include are:
  • Printing of the task list
  • Option to wake or start the computer when a task needs to run. Tasks that runs after coming out of sleep mode.

The latest version of T-Minus Ten is 2.1, and is available at the T-Minus Ten web site.

In this next edit, Jeremiah Morris of Weedhopper Press shows you how to edit a bitmapped font so that the System thinks it's at 12 points. Then if you use it as a Large System font (using this edit to add a Large System font, or Appearance Hopper ), you won't have to worry about it getting scaled in other apps

This can also allow you to take a 9 or 10 point font, make the System think it's a 12 point, and then it can be anti-aliased! (Continued...)

Apple may have a small marketing problem on its hands. It seems almost 60% of ResExcellence readers are referring to the new OS by the wrong name! It will be interesting to see how they deal with this in the future.

Bobby MacBrain from the Bubble-gum and Baling-wire Mac Hack Handbook, expressed the sentiment of many X-ray voters:

I always pronounced it something like "mac awe sex" until I heard Jobs call it "mac oh ess ten". I thought the X was perfect considering the Unix/mach roots.

As a reader of ResExcellence, I'd say you're a hard core computer addict. Do you spend so much time on the net that the spouse wishes that Y2K brings down the power grid? Is the only way you talk to you friends is through AOL Instant Messenger? This week's soul searching Polling Place asks, 'How many hours per week are you busy on the net?'.

The Apple Logo Collection web site now allows you to send Apple Themed Postcards to friends, family, and Wintel users. While I generally try to avoid contact with family members and Wintel users, I did enjoy looking at the dozens of cool cards in each category.

Many of the graphics are also available as desktop pictures and StartupScreens from DVDesign.

DVDesign has submitted to ResExcellence eight slick looking MOSS screens featuring extreme close-ups of Apple's colorful new hardware.

Wigwam Multimedia has just posted a collection of resources to give a facelift to ICQ. In addition to the patch, there are three sets of desktop pictures and other goodies by Erik Veland.

Regarding the recent Applescripts to change Type/Creator codes, Jolin Warren offers:

You mentioned two AppleScripts for changing a batch of files' types/creators. I thought you should have a look at a great utility called FileTyper. It lets you change type/creator codes, creation/modification dates, and Finder flags. The user interface is superb and it comes with a handy "Make Autotyper" application that lets you make droplets that function similar to the AppleScripts you mentioned (except they can do more, like filter incoming files, etc.).

The March Best of Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has been posted at MacPlaza. Votle for your favorite scheme and peruse the new collection of interface elements.

David Sholkoff has updated his SITPatch over the weekend. The ResCompare patcher updates the icons and inhibits Expander's ability to alter the Internet Preferences. This update fixes a bug that caused the patch to fail when it could not determine if the user had the Stuffit Engine installed.

Past ResExcellence contributor, Joel Sass, has hung his own shingle and opened the Control Strip Outlet. With over 80 modules and detailed descriptions, you should be able to find whatever you need.

IconTown, a pleasant site for the particularly patient icon positioner, has posted a positively perky interview with Ilicon's prolific, perennial artist, Ilona Melis.

The Petition to Open Source ResEdit currently has about 225 signatures. I doubt that's enough to impress Mr. Jobs. Why not take a moment to stop by there and throw your name into the hat.

With the departure of GUI-Junky and GUI-Central, MacPlaza is just about the last site of its kind. The problem with a web site specializing in desktop pictures, icon packs, and StartupScreens, is that it is extremely bandwidth intense.

ISP's don't exactly like bandwidth intense websites. After you start pushing 10 gigs of data through their lines, they want to charge you more. So the irony is, the bigger you get, the more it costs.

In an unusual move, MacPlaza is looking for support via a Kagi shareware system. Stop by and see if you can help!

Our buddy Jeremiah Morris from Weedhopper Press has updated AppearanceHopper! It allows you to: set the font size, the style of the System Fonts, access the "hidden" scroll bar options, set the style of alias names, turn off the arrow badge on aliases, and modify the Application Switcher palette, all in one user-friendly control panel. Yowza!

Remember the "Secret About Box" easter egg in older versions of the MacOS? Justine Reese has cleverly extracted the game of Breakout and placed it in a hacked copy of the Calculator. You never actually see the calculator, but launching it brings up the game of "Breakout" featuring the programmer's names.

Thomas Templeton has created a little to utility to view the contents of the Desktop Database. His web site goes into detail on how it is all put together. Good Geek reading.

Isn't it annoying when you download a bunch of files (pictures, text, etc...) and they don't have any creator codes or worst, they have codes for applications you don't want to use.

For example, you have a bunch of Simpletext files, but you would rather have them opened in Tex-Edit.

Here are a couple of AppleScript to handle the job. Just drag a group of files on them to change the type/creator codes.

This script by Grierson will change both parameters

property fileType : "TEXT" -- change to whatever you want
property creatorType : "ttxt" -- change to whatever you want
--
on open (theList)
tell application "Finder"
repeat with theItem in theList
set file type of theItem to fileType
set creator type of theItem to creatorType
end repeat
end tell
end
open

This version by Athel changes only the application creator code.

on open (docList)
tell application "Finder"
repeat with sourceFile in docList
set the creator type of sourceFile to "TBB6" -- Change to whatever you want
end repeat
end tell
end
open

I've added ten new 32-bit blue folders for applications that match my Blue System folders.

Michael Dicker has also submitted a "Bug's Life" MOSS.

Queen of the Aardvarks, Allyson Lunde, created this great looking iCab throbber. Just copy/paste the cicn resources into iCab, and you're ready to roll!

The PseudoRoom's latest release features icons from "Batman: The New Animated Series".

"I know only two tunes: one of them is "Happy Birthday To You" and the other one isn't."

LordHades found an Easter Egg in ICQ 1.7.2. Hold down the control, option and command key while double clicking on a nickname. The scrolling cartoon face changes to a picture of someone. Who? I dunno!

With over 30 users submitting their work last month, Sébastien Lavoie is a lucky man to have won the March drawing in appreciation of contributors.

Sébastien will be receiving a copy of "A Brief History of Time" by Steven Hawking, a down to earth explanation of the Theory of Relativity, quantum mechanics, black holes, and the creation of the universe. That pretty much sums it up!

Thanks again to everyone who contributed last month. This site is better because of you!

Don Tipton wondered:

I recently purchased Mac OS X Server, and am enjoying the ability to customize the system using text editors and paint programs immensely. There are no resource forks, and all the applications are folders of "resources," which are collections of standard file types.

As I understand it, resources have a limited lifetime in the future of the Mac. Are there any plans to include a section on editing the "resources" in OS X?

MacOS X Server is much more "Unix" than "Mac". One of the reasons I have been beating myself up with Linux was in preparation of OS X.

Just like Linux, most preference and configuration files are plain text! Buttons, folders, even widow elements are all stored in standard graphic formats. If you want to see examples, stop by http://themes.org/

But remember, we're talking about the Server software. We don't know yet what OS X Client will be like. Based on Carbon, it looks like resource forks will be around for a while.

Have no fear, ResExcellence will gladly offer edits for MacOS X in all its flavors (just as soon as I buy a copy!).

While MacSoup is my favorite newsreader, that tin can splash screen was getting a little old! Michael Dicker has sent in a great looking replacement.

Kevin Brahl delivered an "About This Mac" replacement featuring MacOS 8.5.1

Are you interested in synching your Palm Pilot with a FileMaker Pro database? While it requires some customizing, Ryan Colley submitted this AppleScript to automate the task for you.

There is an edit I'm trying to do. It should be very easy, but I'm stuck.

The icons that are used by the Keyboard menu (ksc4) are in exactly the same format as the normal ics4 icons.

I should be able to RMAP the icl8 editor to work on ksc4 resources, but I keep getting an "Out of Memory -108" error just as the editor opens.

Suggestions?

I'm back on the mainland; a little tanner, a lot poorer.

Did everyone enjoy the April Fool update? The vast majority of emails say you did. Of course, a few humorless individuals didn't "get it" and cursed me to the high-heavens for my heresy. Odd, but I enjoyed reading those letters the most. :)

In the spirit of the jest, several of you created RegExcellence contributions featuring the Window's logo. While I appreciate the effort, let's just call them our own private joke and not subject the rest of the class to them! Besides, my substantial ego can't handle anymore hate mail!

Whenever you see a reference to Apple's new server OS in the mainstream press, you can expect to see the phrase, "pronounced OS Ten". I can't help it. I say OS X, as in 24th letter of the alphabet.

This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you say OS X or OS Ten?"

These next few items arrived while I was on vacation and didn't get posted in a timely manner. In case you didn't catch them anywhere else, here they are...

Ilicon posted 20 cute little Easter Bunny Icons and a Desktop Picture. (Hey, there's always next Easter!)

The Mac Font Vault has posted dozens of new fonts. All the fonts are displayed with a preview, the cost (if any), and versions available.

Mr. Mariel Lohninger from the Macintosh Desktop Picture Collection, has updated his iCab Appearance Patch. This free patch will change the appearance of iCab to make it better suitable for use under Mac OS 8 and greater.

Speak French? ResExcellence contributor Jean-Jacques Cortes has been busy translating your favorite Mac programs.

Mellow Software has updated PopUp Manager to version 2.0. It managers Apple's tabbed folders.
