Add Large and Small System Fonts to MacOS 8.5
Sorry Apple, I still don't like Charcoal. The first edit I performed on 8.5 was adding fonts to the Appearnce Control Panel. Thanks to resource templates created by Jeremiah Morris, the task is even easier.
Intructions to install the templates:
After downloading the templates, open the ResEdit preferences file in ResEdit (you can find it in the System Folder-->Preferences). Open the new template file in ResEdit and select all the resources with Command-A.
Paste these resources into the ResEdit Preferences file with Command-V. You may get a dialog asking how to handle duplicate ID numbers - select the Unique button.
Save the preferences and quit ResEdit. The next time you launch the program, the templates will be ready to use!
Adding the fonts to the Appearance Control Panel:
Several people have written in to say they followed the instructions, yet the font did not appear in the popup menu. Most often, this is doue to an incorrect name being entered. If the name of the font is in doubt, open the font suitcase in ResEdit and make sure you're using the name as it appears in the FOND resource.
We'll start by changing the Small System Font.
Open a copy of the System suitcase in ResEdit and find the sfs# resources.
Open them with a double-click.

There is only one ID - number 0.
Open it with a double-click.
Initially, you will see two fonts listed: Geneva and Lucide Grand. To add an additional font, click once on 3)***** and from the Resource menu, select Insert New Fields. A new set of item boxes will be added - ready for your new font.
Enter the point size , and the name of your font. You can repeat this for as many fonts as you wish to add.
In the example, I added 12 point Tecton.
When you're finished, close this resource.
Part two of the Small System font involves the sfe# resources.
Find them and open them with a double-click.

There is only one ID - number 0.
Open it with a double-click.
As in the resource above, you will see two fonts listed: Geneva and Lucide Grand. To add an additional font, click once on 3)***** and from the Resource menu, select Insert New Fields.
In this template, you have the additional option of adding a font style.
Enter the point size ,style, and the name of your font. You can repeat this for as many fonts as you wish to add.
Style Codes:
0 - plain text
1 - bold
2 - italic
4 - underline
8 - outline
16 - shadow
32 - condensed
64 - extended
Finally, we'll change the Large System Font.
Find the sfn# resources and open them with a double-click.

Open ID #0
In this template, there will be many fonts already listed. Scroll down to the bottom and click one on the last open item number - probably 9)*****.
From the Resource menu, select Insert New Fields and enter the point size and name of your new font as shown in the example.
As in the Small Font size, you can add as many new fonts as you wish.
After modifying all three resources, save your work and quit ResEdit. Replace the old System suitcase with the new one and restart the computer.
After reboot, open the Appearance Control Panel to set your fonts. Be warned: not all fonts look good as the small System font. Experiment to find one that works for you.
