My daughter has been pleading with me for more than a year to switch to AOL as our ISP. I've been happy with the service the Family has received from ATT Worldnet, and changing that email address would have meant changing an address book entry for many relative who could barely set it to begin with!
The solution to appease my 12 year old was AOL Instant Messanger. Like ICQ, this little program allows you to contact people online. If you have a lot of friends on AOL, it may be a more practical choice than ICQ.
While the program works as advertised, after a weekend of working with it, I saw obvious areas for improvment!
Lets start with the sound files. Some of which are incredible annoying.
If you look in your AIM folder, open the AIM Files folder, and in there you'll see the Sounds folder.
You can replace these with any System 7 type sound file.
You can record your own with SimpleSound, the Monitors & Sound control panel, or head over to ClixSounds and download some of their fine offerings.
I've installed AIM on two computers and neither showed the correct application icon. Here's how to "turn it on".
Open AIM in ResEdit and from the File menu "Get Info"
Check the two boxes Has BNDL, and Use Custom Icon.
Save your work and quit ResEdit. The change should be immediate, but may also take a restart.

If you are artistic, you can create a new splash screen and paste it into PICT ID#1000.
Paul Heayn has created on of the first replacements for you to download, but be warned - it's rated PG-13.
Watch for more AIM edits in upcoming ResExcellence posts.
