| Add an icon to Stuffit Expander for BinHqx files.
Have you ever noticed that a freshly downloaded Stuffit BinHex (hqx) archive has a generic document icon? This new edit shows you how to create a new Bundle Bit resource and assign an icon to all those hqx files!
Open a copy of Stuffit Expander in ResEdit and find the icl8 resources.
Open them with a double-click.
From the Resource menu, select Create New Resource. This will bring up an empty icon editor window.
Before you create your replacement icon, from the Resource menu, select Get Resource Info.
Change the Resource ID to 4000. For extra credit give it a name.
You can then close the info window and create your replacement icon in the icon editor.
Be sure to drag your 8 bit creation to all the other size and color depth windows until an entire icon family is created.
In a rare magnanimous moment, I offer my icon for you to download. :)
We have our icon, now we need to tell the Stuffit which file types to assign it to.
Find the BNDL resources and open them with a double-click.
From the Resource menu select Create New Resource.
Under Signature enter: BnHq, then from the Resource menu, select Create New File Type.
Replace the ???? with TEXT.
Double-clicking on the empty icon field brings up an icon selection window. Select icon 4000.
When you're finished, the window should look like the one on the left.
Open BNDL ID#128.
From the Resource menu, select Create New File Type.
Once again replace the ???? with TEXT and assign icon 4000.
Save your work and quit ResEdit. Restart your computer and hold down the Command-Option keys, and select yes in the dialog box to rebuild the desktop database. (This adds the information for the new BNDL resource.)
After the desktop is rebuilt, all current and future hqx files will have the new icon!
