In this next edit, Jeremiah Morris of Weedhopper Press shows you how to edit a bitmapped font so that the System thinks it's at 12 points. Then if you use it as a Large System font (using this edit to add a Large System font, or Appearance Hopper ), you won't have to worry about it getting scaled in other apps

This can also allow you to take a 9 or 10 point font, make the System think it's a 12 point, and then it can be anti-aliased!

For this example, I'm using a copy the Espi Sans suitcase distributed with Kaleidoscope.

While no other applications are running, open the Espi font suitcase and copy only Espi Sans 10 to the desktop.

Open Espi Sans 10 in ResEdit and find the NFNT resources.

Open them with a double-click.

From the Resource menu, select Get Resource Info. Change the resource ID and give it a new name. It doesn't really matter what you change it to, but if you want to use the original Espi Sans fonts as well, you need to change it. Pick a 4-digit number at random, you should have a good chance of finding one that's not in use. For example, I simply picked 1234!

Close the NFNT resource.

The next thing to do involves the FOND resource. This tells the systemabout the fonts. Open the FOND resource picker.

Use "Get Resource Info", on the single ID and change the name and number to match the NFNT resource.

Close the info window and open the FOND ID# 1234.

The second entry is "Family ID"; change this to the number of the NFNT and FOND resources.

Next, scroll down to the area where it says "# of Font Entries". This is the section where the fonts and sizes are stored. The size needs to be 12, since that's what the computer is looking for. The style should be 0 - that indicates the regular style. The "Res ID" is the number of the FOND and NFNT resources from above.

When you finished, close the FOND resources.

From the File Menu, select Get Info on ResEx Sans 12...

Unlock the file and change the name of the font. ResEdit will make you save the file and close it. You can then quit ResEdit.

Drop your new font in the Fonts folder and restart the computer. Fire up SimpleText or some other application, and look at the Font menu. If you don't see your font listed, try changing the resource IDs and try again, but it should be there!

Note you can use the edit to add a Large System font, or Appearance Hopper to make the new font a Large System font, and you'll even be able to scale it!
