Replacement screen for MacOS during startup
New Instructions for Giant MOSS
Lauri Kieksi has put together some excellent install instructions to account for the larger size of the Giant MOSS:
- Give ResEdit extra memory - at least a meg
- Copy the System suitcase and open it in ResEdit.
- Open the ResEdit file that contains the MOSS you want to use.
- Find the PICT res ID -16506 of the MOSS file and open it with a doubleclick.
- Copy the image (just select Copy from the paste menu).
- Open the PICT res ID -16506 of the System copy.
- Paste the image from the clipboard into the window.
- Do the same with the other PICT resources in the MOSS file (ie. the text lines).
- Check that the resources in the MOSS file and in the System copy have the same res names and ID numbers.
- Save the System (copy) and Quit ResEdit.
- Move the original System out of the System folder and drag the copy in. Make sure it's named "System". Wait for a few seconds. You can check that the System copy works right by pulling down the Apple menu. If the menu items (eg. the items you have in the Apple Menu items folder) won't show up then wait a bit longer. If they still won't show up, something's wrong with the System copy. If everything seems to work fine, restart and that's it. Hopefully.
One problem with a StartupScreen is that you lose the progress bar the System displays during bootup.
If you have a graphics program you're comfortable with, you can customize the MacOS screen to suit your taste.
In the example below, I tweaked my picture to match my favorite Kaleidoscope Scheme, Light Alloy. While I stayed true to the original look, you can put anything in the graphic, just make sure you keep it the same size (pixels), and be aware of the bottom center, where the progress bar will appear.

Where is this picture stored? Under the PICT rescources in the System suitcase.
Open a copy of the System suitcase in ResEdit.
Scroll down to the PICT resources and open them with a double-click.
Find ID#-16506 and open it with a double-click. Simply copy the picture (command-C), paste it into a new window in your graphics program, modify it, then paste it back into ID# -16506.

Some of the recent PICT resources submitted by users weigh in at 8 times the file size of the original Smilin' Mac!
After pasting in the replacement, select the ResEdit menu item "Get Resource Info". Make sure the System Heap and Purgeable boxes are checked before saving the file.
Save your work and quit ResEdit. Replace the old System suitcase, making sure the System folder has its custom icon, and restart the computer to see the new screen.
