Change the PC-Card Icons that appear on the Desktop.
As a Powerbook owner, there are several different types of PCMCIAs card that I plug in and out of my computer. The dull grey icons are boring, so here's how to change them.
Most of the icons are stored in the Finder. If your card installs an custom extension, the icon may also be there. In this example, we'll assume we found the icon in the Finder.
 Make a copy of the Finder by Option-dragging it to the desktop (This avoids the copy extension). Open the desktop copy with ResEdit and scroll down to the icl8 resources.
Open them with a double-click.

In my example, the PC-Card is an ISDN modem that uses icon #23013.

I downloaded the
Powerbook Mania icons which contain a nice looking PC-Card.
Copy the icon from the Powerbook Mania folder (using Get Info...) and paste it into the icl8 window in ResEdit.
Drag it into the other large icon bit-sizes, but leave the small ones empty. The Finder will generate those as needed.
Save your work and quit ResEdit. Replace the old Finder with the new one and restart. Whenever you insert the modem PC-Card, you'll get the new custom icon.
