Change the Splash Screens in Netscape and Explorer.
In the never ending quest to customize your Mac, you can now replace the screens that these web browsers display while loading their preferences.
The first thing you'll need to do is create the replacement graphic in your favorite imaging program.
For Netscape, the image needs to be indexed colored (256 or less) and have the dimensions 380w X 215h.
For Explorer, you also need the image indexed and the dimensions are 352w X 227h.
Here's a quick little image I created for Netscape.
For Netscape, you have to set aside a black area at the bottom of your picture for Netscape to write display messages.
Once you've finished the replacement picture, copy it to the clipboard for future pasting into the browser.
For Netscape:
Open a copy of the program with ResEdit and scroll to the PICT resources.
Open them up with a double-click, and find ID# 128.
Open it with a double-click.
Paste in the replacement from the clipboard.
2-10-99 Update: Communicator 4.5 uses the PICT #128 from a file called AutoAdmin Library in the "Essential Files" folder. For some reason this overrides the PICT in the app itself. The PICT has the same resource number and size as the one in the app, and the patch works as you say, but it has to be done to the AutoAdmin Library.
The side benefit of this is that one can make dozens of copies of this tiny file and patch each of them with a different splash screen, rotating them in and out of the Essential Files folder in between launches. I'm sure some enterprising sould could even write a nifty little AppleScript to rotate each copy into the Essential Files folder prior to each launch (or after each quit). - Matthew Ruben
If you created your replacement for Explorer, do the following:
Open a copy of Explorer and scroll down to PICT resources.
ID# 401 is image you want to replace.
When creating the replacement, you will not need to set aside an area at the bottom for program messages.
Paste in your replacement from the clipboard.
Once you have the replacement pasted into the appropriate PICT ID, save your work and quit ResEdit. Next time you launch your browser, you'll be greeted by the new screen.
