Change Netscape's PICT icons
I don't know about you, but when I'm searching the web for the latest "Cool Thing", I don't automatically load the images of the pages I browse. (If you're not aware of this feature, it's under the Options Menu in Navigator, and in Explorer it's a preference set under Web Content). The only problem I encounter is the icon that Netscape sticks on the page to let you know an image belongs there. For smaller images, a button or a bullet, that icon can make the page unreadable.
My solution: Change that icon! This week, we'll create a new, smaller icon for Navigator to display when we're browsing and not automatically loading images. So let's dig in...
Netscape Resources
 |
Opening a copy of Navigator with ResEdit, find and double-click to open the cicn resource (the triangular yellow warning icon).
Your window may display more resource choices than the ones shown at left. That's only because I resized the window so the picture would be smaller.
cicn resources featuring number 317

At this point, you're presented with a new window full of the icons Navigator uses. The one we're concerned with right now is icon resource number 317.
Original Netscape Icon
 |
Double-click to open it, and you'll be presented with ResEdit's icon editing palette. I chose to keep the circular portion of the original icon, but you can replace it with whatever small picture you wish.

My new smaller icon

The key is to move your new icon to the upper-most left hand corner of the editing window. Once you have the icon where you want it, copy and paste the entire drawing into the black and white, and mask windows.
Save your work and quit ResEdit and you're ready to go.

That's it! Now when you browse with images off, your page layout will look much better. If you have any questions, or wish to suggest a future hack, drop me a line.
