Date Viewer by DouWere Software is a desktop calendar that floats on your desktop. It is designed with an interface similar to the "brushed metal" appearance of the new QuickTime interface. What makes it useful apart from giving you the date is its plugin capabilities and drag and drop features. You can quickly grab the date and drag it into a document. Decor is a very popular extension which lets you replace the dull desktop pattern with an image of your choice. It has more options than Apple's Desktop Pictures. Décor works fine under MacOS 8.0, 8.1 and 8.5.x. (Under 8.0 and 8.1, you will have to disable the Desktop Pictures control panel). Default App just makes life on the computer so much simplier! It will allow you to select default programs to open files you commonly use. For instance, I will tell you how I use it. I use Graphic Converter to open all my graphic files. When I get a Photoshop file and all I want to do is view it, I prefer not to have PS open up when I double click the file. This is where Default App kicks in. A double click will automatically select Graphic Converter as the application that opens it. Should I wish PS to open it I simply open PS and select the file to be opened. Default Folder by St. Clair Software is a control panel that will enhance the sub-optimal Apple Open and Save dialog boxes. Until you use a product like this you probably never realize what you have been missing. Desktop Icon Manager by G.J. Parker will save your icon setting and restore them to their original position after a resolution change or whenever they get disarranged. It employs the use of Apple Script. There are several other applications that do this but this is free. Plus as the read me states: "DIM doesn't get confused when you store the icon positions at one screen resolution and then restore them at a different screen resolution. In other words, if an icon is at the bottom right corner of the display when the icon positions are stored then that icon will always be placed at the bottom right corner regardless of the screen resolution." Desktop Resetter by Nick D'Amato provides a quick way for you to reorganise your desktop after changing your screen resolutions. "This is good if you play games or change resolutions frequently. It is also useful since some programs tend to either change resolution or somehow cause things on the desktop to scatter randomly. Crashing can also cause desktop items to do this." Do you ever find yourself taking a screenshot or a picture of a specific window using command-shift-3 and command-shift-4 then having to go to the top level of your hard drive to retrieve it? This can be annoying. This simple extension will place those pictures directly on your desktop for easy access. NOTE: It appears that enabling Multiple-Users under System 9 breaks this extension. Dialog View allows you to change the appearance of directory dialogs (Open and Save dialogs). You can control what kind of icons are used, increase the height and width of the file list, and set the font for the file list. Not compatible with Norton Directory Assistance. Now includes some PowerPC code. It is compatible with Mac OS 8.5.x. For the Platinum look check out this edit. DividerLines by Stefan Kurth is a small extension that will turn any item with a "$" at the end of the line into a grey line that can be then used as a divider in the Apple Menu. With System 8.5 came a plethora of application menu tools. Dock Manager was one of the first and one of the best also. It had the ability in later versions to handle your Sherlock Plugins also. With the release of Mac OS 9 this function will no longer be needed as Sherlock 2 has this ability built into it. Everyday Software is recommending you use this Lite version when upgrading to OS 9 to prevent conflicts. DockZone by Objective Software is a control panel that will allow you to place a "dock" area on the right side of your screen reserved for volumes and the trash. It is similar to the effect you see in BeOS or Rhapsody. The control panel allows full customization of colors and width. Dot What? from No-U-Turn Inc. is a really useful program I use all the time. Did you ever receive a file from a friend or from an internet download and wonder how to read it? Many files have some sort of 3 digit extension at the end of the name (ie. sit, hqx, psd), rendering it very difficult to determine the correct application to associate with them. Simply launch Dot What?, type in the questionable file extension, and instantly be presented with its description, recommended application to open it with, and even a corresponding web site for each application! DragThing by James Thomson is a launcher program and so much more. It features a process dock to track your open applications, fully customizable colors to suit just about everyone and a plethora of dock styles. Additional features beside the basic launching abilities is the assignment of keyboard shortcuts. It is well worth a look. For more customising please check out the edit on the left! Click the Aqua Button at the left to go to the Mac OS X version. Drop Drawers by Sig Software is without a doubt the one piece of software you want to get if you are only getting one. "Drop Drawers is a revolutionary user-interface enhancement which provides floating pull-out, snap-shut drawers on the sides of your screen to store text, URLs, aliases, pictures, sounds, movies and anything else." It literally replaces numerous individual programs. It is a very solid program I use everyday! Click the Aqua Button at the left to go to the Mac OS X version. Easy Keys by Kerry Clendinning will provide you with a Control Panel that enables you to use Function keys or Key Combinations to launch applications, desk accessories or control panels. 8Tuner is an application that modifies certain resources in your System and Finder to change the appearances and functionalities of your Mac OS 8. Since all changes are modified directly in your system software, the changes do not require extra system memory to function. Mac OS 8, 68040 or PowerPC are required to run 8Tuner. Mac OS 8.x Only. Compatible with Mac OS 8.6 Final Release. EmptyTempFolder by John Schilling will look into the Temp Folder and allow you to empty it. Mac OS use to empty this temporary folder for you by placing the items in the Trash if you crashed. Currently with Mac OS 9 it will keep the items in there. This can grow over time to a very large size. (see Also Eradicator below or AutoPurge on Page 1) Eradicator by Scott Crick will look into the Temp Folder and allow you to empty it. Mac OS use to empty this temporary folder for you by placing the items in the Trash if you crashed. Currently with Mac OS 9 it will keep the items in there. This can grow over time to a very large size. (see Also EmptyTempFolder above or AutoPurge on Page 1) Four FKeys to add the following commands to smaller keyboards: Home, End, PageUp, PageDown. Extension Overload: This comprehensive utility by Teng Chou Ming and Peter Hardman of Redpoint Software lives up to its name by providing an extensive listing of control panel and extension descriptions, but it doesn’t stop there. Extension Overload can enable and disable control strip modules, contextual menu modules, and fonts in addition to control panels and extensions. Furthermore, the built-in component and system error code databases are searchable. EudoraThing, from Arlo Rose, allows you change the color of the reply-to text in Eudora. Go here for a plethora of edits for Eudora. Fat Cursors by Robert Abatecola is a "system extension/control panel that installs slightly larger Arrow and IBeam cursors. If you've ever seen the standard cursors on a PowerBook, or if you just have a hard time finding the cursor on your screen, you'll definitely be able to appreciate this utility! Fat Cursors™ v1.2.2 also features a "find cursor" function that works on any Mac (not just PowerBooks!)." Finder Fixer is an older control panel that can still serve a use with the newer OS's. With this control panel you can assign more memory to the Finder which may help prevent error messages and actually increase performance. File Freak by John Scalo is a wonderful search tool for the Mac. From The read me: File Freak (formerly known as The Apper) is a simple program that offers a new and better way to get at your files. Rather than navigating through several levels of folders in the Finder, or using Apple's relatively slow Sherlock search program, just start typing the name of the file you're looking for into the File Freak window. File Freak dynamically minimizes the matching list of files as you type. Then you have several commands at your disposal including open, move to trash, and open enclosing folder. File Freak also supports wildcard searching and drag-and-drop. Click the Aqua Button at the left to go to the Mac OS X version. If you find yourself wishing you could edit the clippings files that you make, then you want to try this program out. FinderNote is a basic text editor that will also allow you to edit Text, URL and Pict clippings with ease. A brilliant feature of Mac OS is the ability to have a contextual menu appear when the control key is held down and you mouse click. There are times however when you may not want to be bothered holding the control key down or can't. When? well when you are lounging back in your chair surfing!! FinderPop adds Control-free CMM popup -- just click and hold. It has so many other features and is so stable that you must try it to believe it. Focus Bus Tool™ by Focus Softworks will reset the mouse if it goes wacky. If your mouse starts to act jerky or you notice that typing text cause some letters to drop out this little program will help. Folder Action Plus "is an extension that extends the functionality of Apple's Folder Actions server to allow you to execute scripts when items are added to or removed from *closed* folders." Font Smoothie by No-U-Turn, Inc. is a small program that gives you more control over your system fonts. Font Smoothie will allow you to change your system font and system font size to whatever you desire. It also allows you set the font smoothing of the system to any desired size. From the read me: Forker is a little hack I put together which fools ResEdit into editing the data forks of files.When you open files in ResEdit with Forker active you will see an additional resource, type '<DF>', ID 128 in each file that you open. This resource contains the contents of the file's data fork, and editing it and saving your changes will likewise modify the file's data fork. Forward Delete is a small extension that enable the del on extended keyboards. This will allow you to delete the character directly in front of the cursor "I" beam. Fractastic! by Jake Olefsky is a full screen fractal drawing program that can draw the famous Mandelbrot, Julia and Newton equations among others. The images make perfect Desktop Pictures! To run this program you will need to get a copy of Apple's Draw Sprockets library and install it into your system folder, or place a copy of the library in the same folder as Fractastic! You can get the latest verstion of draw sprockets here. FunKeys by Rampell Software From the homepage: "FunKeys is an incredibly useful utility for the Macintosh. What FunKeys allows you to do, basically, is "program" those function keys on the top of your keyboard to do things. (The keys F1, F2, F3, F4, etc. They are only on extended keyboards, which most Macs have). Most of us Mac users never even use those things, as they are unsupported by many programs; FunKeys not only gives them a use, but it also makes them really useful."
