Converting gif to png under LinuxPPC

This whole adventure started because KDE2 prefers its icons in the png format over gif and xpm. Some of my favorite icons are made by Hide Itoh, who is kind enough to release most of his sets as tar gif packs.

A command line program that can quickly perform the conversion is cleverly called gif2png. Download the source code and built the application:

> tar xvfz gif2png...
>cd /gif2png
> ./configure
> make
> make install

Once the program is compiled, you can convert an entire folder at one time with the command:

> gif2png /hides_icons/*.gif

If you look in the folder, you will see a correctly named png image for each original gif.

To easily use these png icons with KDE2, place them in the following directory:

/opt/kde2/share/apps/kdesktop/pics

They will appear under "Other icons" when selecting icons from the KDE2 Properties window as shown above.

Updated:

After discussing the conversion of icons from Gifs to PNG, Hide Itoh let me know that he released a Mac version of gif2png! Now you can do the conversions under MacOS.

Hide also says future icon sets for Linux will be released in the png format which is easily handled by most window managers.
