Server History, Part I
ResExcellence is served entirely by a PowerMac 7300/200 running Linux. Attached to the internet through an SDSL line, the server pumps out over a million pages per month. The server is brought down periodically for maintenance, and at the bottom of the left sidebar you can see our uptime. All this from an operating system you can download for free!

While I am far from an expert on Linux, I have had the OS installed on my Powerbook since early 1998. As I discover bits of configuration and User Interface information, I will post them here and hope that they will save you time and make running Linux more enjoyable for you.

Server History, Part II: May 2003 - The Present
The ResEx server was moved to Saint Louis from Chicago in May of 2003. From May to November of 2003 the server was connected to a high-speed cable line at my house, then (thanks to a friend with good connections) the server was moved into a data center at a telecom company through August of 2004.

In July of 2004 (late in the month) word came that the server could no longer stay at the telecom data center and preparations were being made to move it when disaster struck — a very hard crash coupled with a complete loss of data.

One of the options I had already been exploring was retiring the ResEx server, switching to a host based solution that wouldn't compromise our data transfer rate (around 15GB per day at the time) while not breaking our budget. While I did give Mac based hosting a fair chance the best option for our dollars wound up being an Intel based machine running RedHat Linux.

The RedHat server is a dedicated machine that offers me root control via the Terminal over ssh. The biggest benefit for me is I know this server much better than I could ever hope to know the LinuxPPC unit. Not that I'm knocking Michael's LinuxPPC mind you, it's just a matter of not having the front end knowledge that can only come from building and programming a server.
