Get to know your Keychain with my latest article.
Come satisfy your snapshot cravings with Tuesday’s batch:

  • Joaquin Jang submitted this snapshot touting a custom desktop picture in conjunction with the Aqua Theme. Audion, retro-fitted with the X-Fusion face, is kicking out soundwaves near the top.

  • The downright awesome “Big Earth Map” desktop picture from Arstechnica is shown off in this submission from Ralph Lubin. Unsanity Echo X is dishing out tunes in the lower right. PCalc, an industrial strength calculator is running in the upper right.

  • A desktop picture from Anime Fantasy Extreme along with Yoshihiro Kondo’s Another Sugar Plate III K-Scheme debut in this snapshot from Sara. Audion, overhauled with the F1 face, is serving up music in the lower left.

Applescripts 10-31-00 Applescripts by Michael

Timothy Hellum works at a major daily newspaper in Canada. He downloads lots of images from lots of different sites to his servers. Regardless of which application originally created them, Tim can select a bunch of the images and drop them onto the following applet to set the creator codes to PhotoShop, the preferred editor at his paper.

By changing the creator code, you can modify this script to work with any application. When saved as a MacOS X Applet, the script will work with two caveats: The application "Finder" changes to "Desktop", and while the creator code changes immediately, the icon won't switch until the next time you log in.

Some excellent comments have been posted regarding REALBasic in the forum. There are also comments on how to put a graphical front end on perl scripts. One of the more interesting testimonials came from the developer of ThrobberEdit, Drew Hamlin. Um, did I mention he's fourteen years old. (I can't get my 14 year old to keep her room clean!)

Power of the Keychain.

A recent ResEx poll showed most readers are not using Apple's Keychain Software. Jeremy Hoesly has written an article to persuade you to change your mind. It addresses the problems of annoying dialog boxes and describes some applications that support the feature. (Continued...)

Cool Graphic. Sorry lynx users :)The Linux Icebox.

Don't kid yourself. Classic MacOS under MacOS X is emulation. It's very well integrated, and it allows you to continue running older applications, but it's an emulated environment similar to Mac-on-Linux on the PPC/Linux operating system. So how do the two compare regarding speed and features? You'll be surprised at the results. (Continued...)

ResEx Regular Toren Valimir has updated his beautiful site, I/O UNLIMITED MEDIA. It's a great place to get his Audion faces, Kaleidoscope schemes and desktop pics.

User Contributed Splash Screens:
  • The latest wand from Interarchy is a preview of the interface for the soon to be released version 3.8.1. Sad to note: with the release of 3.8.1, the Magic will be gone from Interarchy. Instead of Wands, they will be called Interfaces.

  • Boo! In time for Halloween is the MOSS and ATM set from brenda von ahsen. They feature a Jack-o'-lantern on a spooky night!

  • Michael Theobalds was very happy with the look of Macster. That's why he created this makeover to give the newly christened Napster for Mac the look of its predecessor, Macster.

  • "Dammit Jim, I'm a Webmaster™, not a Doctor!" This LCARS MOSS by Hein Mevissen will look great on the Trekker's Mac. ("Duh" if you have to ask what LCARS means.)

  • Another matching MOSS and ATM set was submitted by Jon Peters. It's based on the MacOS X login panel.

  • Michelangelo's Creation was the inspiration for this Photoshop splash from Gordon.

  • Featuring Darwin's Little Devil, Troy Kellogg created this LoginPanel for MacOS X.

Harness the power of the keychain! My latest article shows you how.
Friday’s snapshots are out:

  • Christopher Brown is back, and he’s in the Halloween mood with this screenshot engulfed in a blazing desktop picture matched with the Orange and Black Crepe K-Scheme. Additionally, the Dragon K-Scheme is shown off in the Photoshop window at center. Audion, equipped with the Spooky face, is hanging in the upper left-hand corner.

  • The “MacHAL” desktop picture debuts in this screenshot from J. Garcia-Tunon. Audion, retro-fitted with the Ultra-Retro face, is practically hidden in the upper right-hand corner. RockNES is emulating the Nintendo game Galaga in the lower right.

  • Another Halloween-inspired snapshot, this time from Kevin Leslie, makes its way to the Snapshot Archive touting Blue Sky Heart’s “Deep Kreep Noctune” desktop picture and William Bart’s Hypersleek Pro Graphite K-Scheme. Halloween icons from Icon Factory line the right edge.

  • This OS X Public Beta submission from Sergio Recabarren showcases the “Aqua Graphite” desktop picture. Icons from Xicons are scattered throughout the shot.

Soon this section will be renamed, the "Perils of Pompei." It wasn't doggie. It was the entire city that ate it when an unfortunate incident with nature (rain), caused a dangerous electric fire. The transformer known as, old sparky, lit up one last time. See below for that bit of serendipity, when I was forced to write with my hands.

Icon  and  Desktop Archives:   Think of the ResExcellence archives as your extended closet. You the best dressed, desktops, have discriminating needs, which sometimes demand catering 24/7. Stick your head in and see what we are modeling. In the mood for a new frock on your desktop?

Trick or Treat

Happy.   A word so fast acting, such a sprint of sentiment.
Even on paper it passes through my system before I can feel anything.
So why now am I frozen with these two words in front of me. HAPPY BLISS.. what rut had I clicked to now?
Could people ever be honest and just call their site "Dead-end"?
Happy B's is a dark place. Black except for the picture taken by mistake.
And not one of photography's best accidents.

We have "the" light. And the muzak.
What the devil is Happy Bliss?  The more I click the more I want to break something. I pound the mouse, the date, in between lines. I tried clicking each individual letter. (Someone is a real ass.) These foreign language sites.. Why does it always say, "Only Japanese." They better not be threatening me. And thank you, for what? that I am not Japanese? or for respecting that you still consider my people Imperialist pigs?

Page 2. I fill out the form. Because the brain does that, constructs a bridge for the blood vessels and tissue that cover the retina. I see now what  Happy Bliss is  so obviously, a site of devotion, for relatives, for loved ones, the dearly departed.

I had conceptualized a similar site, last year. On paper. A place to stack and chronicle citizens without a home for their soul. Pictures of the dead. Stories. Sounds the dead made before they died.

Whatever the family wants. What  you want. The hits and celebrity you never attained in life. Realized eternally. Something to live for before death. An autobiography that wouldn't rot. I still need to flesh out the details. But bottom line, you can't trust cemeteries these days.

Too many necrophiliacs. But leaders in the field claim the population of necro's has remained at a constant. Horny help have always helped themselves. If those are the numbers I concede. Still graves aren't safe memorials, with grave robbers, associationists with out society, artists without anything new, devil worshippers for christ, kids taking up the occult,. Figure in a hundred years any one of us could be the cornerstone of a museum exhibition.

Dear Kiki. My kitter girl. (I type this in the white part of Happy Bliss.) I am so sorry I couldn't protect you from the coyotes. I still miss you so much. I have your picture here now on my desk. It's the blurry one of you next to your favorite Lady Speed Razor. Remember our pick-up hockey games? But it wasn't the sport for you. It was the sound. You made piano tingles tapping that plastic hollow arm. I'll see you soon, creaker, forever. Love, Jessica.

Return.

And I'm in. Somewhere.

I think I hear her. They must have gotten on the loud speaker. Kiki come in Kiki come in. Her little soul is being sent up. She's about to appear, floating, "Yes."  or   "Not at this time. Ask later."

I search my mind. Had I ever read where the OTO goes to Japan?  Did L. Ron Hubbard's loose affiliations during the 20's with Crowley take root in Japan to form a particularly blood thirsty death cult?

Capsules. Bullets.
Real words. American words. 70 mg.  30 mg.  Fire.  Death by Fire.  Happy Bless.  I don' t know about death by fire. Is that what I am missing here? It strikes me that I may have heard that death by fire isn't so bad. Are the happy bliss people counciling their adherents, in case?. Hang on, not to fret. If you find yourself at the stake, or in airplane on fire, after the initial blisters.  .  .

to be continued.

Software News: by Cletus™

Glidel is updated once again to correct a nasty bug causing a crash for anyone checking the About Glidel dialog collapse box. The update brings this fine software for increasing the Finder's dragging capabilities to version 5.1.1. The fact sheet reads that "About Glidel" is triggered as soon as invoked, even when the About your Macintosh dialog is front most.

Launch Key received a couple of significant updates also the other day. Version 4.0.1 brings a decrease in memory usage — always a valuable fix. It also provides several bug fixes as well. Launch Key is described as "a macro utility with which you can automate almost any task on your Mac."

Michael F. Kamprath updates Program Switcher to version 5.5.2 by ClaireWare Software. Program Switcher is described as "premier MacOS application management utility. With a simple keystroke, you can switch to, launch, quit, or hide any application. With a similar keystroke, you can switch, close, or hide the windows of an application." This version fixed a bug where the user was unable to define a keystroke for a hot key if no other hot keys were already defined.

Become a Beta tester for St. Clair Software and Default Folder. The last full regular version is available on the Software Archive page. However, Default Folder 3.0.8b1 public beta is also available. This pre-release version corrects compatibility problems with the Classic environment in OS X, Mac OS 9.1, and Windows NT servers. Other enhancements are listed below and include:

• Default Folder now runs correctly in the Classic environment under OS X.
• Carbon applications running under Mac OS 9.1 are now supported.
• Navigation Services can now be turned off on an application-by-application basis.
• An option was added in the "expert preferences" to force Default Folder to add invisible folders to the Recent Folders menu. This works around a bug in Windows NT Server.
• The "Remove deleted folders from the menu" option now works with the control strip module as well as in file dialogs.
• When checking for deleted folders, Default Folder also checks the names of folders in the Recent Folder list and updates their names in the menu if they change.
• More rigorous checking for corrupted preferences prevents crashes at startup if the prefs file is damaged.

DropDrawers for OS X has been updated to version 1.2.7. This version fixes the crash which occurs when using process drawers while the Classic environment is running. I have updated the Software Archive page for OSX.

MacThings has posted a couple of new themes by Michael Rabe. They are "TrueBlue" and "Nova". Michael also wants to announce that he has taken all of the GlassWorks Themes back to the “drawing board." They are all undergoing some changes. "I don't know how long it will take" he says, but he really wants to bring them up to par with what his expectations have been all along. That includes adding sound sets!

Taiitusoftware has posted a new scheme at Desktopper dot net. It is called 'Kurogana' and features darker tones of grey with white hi-lites. Looks pretty good so give it a try.

Johan Grahn contributes this script, "A few days ago there was a nice Applescript (by Victor Yee) which sorted the windows on the desktop. It was really neat except for one thing. When I sorted the windows downward the active window was on the top, covering all the window titles. As I am a beginner to Apple script I just saw what I wanted to do but couldn't figure out how to do it. It took some time to find the correct statement.I added an if statement which opens the windows one by one if stagger downwards right is choosen. There is probably a better and simpler way to accomplish the same thing."

If you program in REALBasic, a new web site has tons of info for you. ReallyBasic is designed in the style of Slashdot, where users can readily submit stories. I'd like to learn a programming language, and in the recent interview, Greg Landweber recommends Perl, which I'm familiar with, but it has no GUI front end. In this forum thread, I'm looking for comments on REALBasic.

X-Tips

All of our MacOS X tips have been placed on a single page. If you think you may have missed any, take a look.

  • This site has a little tutorial on modifying TexEdit to edit the hidden 'dot' files under MacOS X.
  • MacOS X Apps is a new site with in depth info on software for the newest OS.

MacInstruct has posted Part II of How to Make a Mac Webserver. This wraps up Washington Apple Pi's series on serving webpages with Macintosh computers (using the MacOS).

The PPCLinux program, Mac-On-Linux has been updated to version 0.9.52. This version adds some amazing new features.

Session save and restore: Just like in VirtualPC, you can now quit MOL and instantly return to where you were under the MacOS - and it does this incredible fast. It also supports multiple ethernet paths, and adds support for the newer 2.4 kernel.

The only problem I had was when I tried to use the latest 2.2.18 kernel, this latest MOL.rpm is happiest with a 2.2.17 kernel.

The past several updates have boasted of speed improvements. I'll try to run some tests comparing Mac-On-Linux to MacOS X Classic by Friday.

  • This contribution from Jaco features a custom desktop picture compiled from a variety of sources. Audion, equipped with the Wisp face, is kicking out music in the upper left. Icons from Icon Factory propagate the desktop.

  • This simple but elegant screenshot from Sergio Recabarren provides a custom desktop pattern coupled with the FT-300 K-Scheme. Audion, outfitted with the Gizmo face, is serving up music in the upper right. Various icons from Icon Factory and icons.cx along with some homegrown ones are also visible.

  • This crammed snapshot from Scott Spencer touts a desktop picture from MacDesktops (not that you can see it) and the AquaX II K-Scheme. Audion, overhauled with the Quickax face, is pumping out soundwaves alongside the QuickTime 5 Preview Release.

No excuses. I have nothing to hide. I was not out pleasure seeking today. I was at my desk working on the submissions. Preparing the incoming batch rather than attacking those that Iliona provided. Why you might ask. Because they had to go somewhere when they left the mail folder. I got a rather mean e-mail from a postmaster somebody. Who suggested that if I ignored his request to empty my box... (insert unveiled threat here)  What? Ever

Plus I picked up cooties from the submissions. All shrugged off by Norton, deemed entirely minor. So today I basically learned that the "read me's" that Iliona required are completely necessary and not extraneous elements of being organized. Not to mention the mechanics of memory. Especially when you have too many applications open. Read me didn't even register open in the finder. So if you don't send them. I will be forced to make them myself, and I will be chanting your name the entire time. Do you want altered mojo?  I almost sound like one of those evil webmistress' that all sound alike. Sorry. Let me try again. Please use read me if possible, if not simple text. Include your name as you want to see it, the title of jpeg submission, and the 2 sizes you are offering.

Icon  and  Desktop Archives:   Ben wrote a tip top suggestion for icons he'd like to see: Sport, teams. I second that. I want basketball and he wants baseball, I think. He is probably a New York something fan. Me, Lakers, me Kobe. If you have inside line, use it. Or you might want to make em. We will offer them up in our biblioteca archive here.

Two more collections of OSX icons at Xicons. The software set features, "Alien Skin," and "Atari," folders, by Carlos Reyes. And "Planets." looks like dreary planets on OS9, but on their website, they are heavenly. I want big huge half of my screen icons, me too, please. Jessica stop whining. Fine. The planets were crafted by James Doyle.

Matt's Matrix.  5 new sets.  I don't usually like cartoon characters. It is a bias that I would like to overcome. Point me in a direction. Tell me what to read, what to look at. My taste might not change, but I could develop an understanding of what other people are appreciating.  Some anime is very agreeable, but the minute the kiddies get screwball faces, I feel abandoned, at a loss. Therefore, Normally I would not weigh in on an action figure. But we are talking about five entire sets.

Matt makes choices I don't expect. The white shadow box faced experiments from his last incarnation foreshadow, an interest in the white as opposed to the black icon mask. I thought that was courageous. But it is better thank that. The work has an intrinsic strength that holds together beyond characters that might appear similar to those on T.V. Born full blown adult masked men from the top of Matt's head. What sort of battle can follow? The way he splashes his neon around, all loosey goosey, playing hot and fast with the pantheon. As if they never occupied the pain of birth together. The revolution of the white lighted men continues.

Flaxcreations got all dressed up for Halloween. For your festive needs, to spoil you stinky rotten. Even if you are just coming to the door to shriek "trick or treat."

13 new desktops at Mandolux ranging in a wide range of top gun fantasy rides.  Eye bulger centerfold shots of your fave stealth beauty,  chillin on the runway, or hanging out in the near the hanger having a smoke with friends. If your taste doesn't fly to those extremes. You might select an abstraction of electronica or just enjoy plundering a strangers drawers. It's fun to poke through!

Long time reader and fan of ResExcellence Bill Hughes wrote me and told me to stop whining about being here on the bottom of the page. That is easy for him to say. He isn't down here where it is lonely, dark and scary too. All I can say is "beam me up Scottie!"

Rearrange Folders 1.1.4 has been released. This shareware program will allow you to neatly and efficiently prescribe the positioning of windows of disks and folders in the Finder. "Additionally, you can specify how the items in the windows should be ordered and you can choose whether to display the contents as icons, buttons or list view."

NextAppearance is probably the first — of many I am sure — attempts to change the look of Mac OSX from Aqua to NextStep user interface. Released by Bruno Blondeau, this program will control the switch to NextStep and if needed, the return to Aqua. There is a word of caution everyone needs to heed:

Caution: due to some bugs in MacOS X, this new theme is not perfect, and some applications freeze when you click in a text field (you have to kill them in this case)

Tuesday’s snapshots are hot off the press:

  • This snapshot from Jade Barton touts the “Marathon 2 Durandal” desktop picture and Hi-Tech Theme. SoundJam, retooled with the Pioneer G2 skin, is dishing out tunes in the center. Icon selections from Icon Factory, icons.cx, and Perfect Yosemite are also on display.

  • This OS X Beta snapshot from Brandon has more wheels than a Sears automotive department! Several awesome sport cars are embodied in iconic form, courtesy of Xicons. NeXbar is docked on the right edge.

  • Sean King contributed this screenshot showcasing The Apple Collection’s “iMovie Shower” desktop picture in combination with Yoshihiro Kondo’s Sugar Plate V K-Scheme. Audion, retro-fitted with Jeremie Hornus Design’s OS X Player face, is pumping out soundwaves in the lower right.

  • Circles are definitely the focus in this cool snapshot by Evan Sharp sporting Tazl Design’s “Circles” desktop picture. Audion, overhauled with the equally circular Big Worthless Button face by Jake Rodkin, is circulating the music in the upper left. The hoards of round icons lining the edges are from icons.cx.

It should be no surprise that the majority of Mac users favor a split in Microsoft, but 84% was a little surprising.

One interesting aspect of the Wired story that prompted the poll referred to the overruling by the Appellate court on the order to force Microsoft to ship a browserless version of Windows. At the time, I felt it was a major defeat for the government's case, but in actuality, it allowed them to move forward with confidence. Using that court ruling as a set of guildlines, the DOJ felt they now new how to stucture to case to win on appeal. If you haven't read the print version, the article will be online in three weeks. I'll post a link to it then.

I must admit that I fast-forward through TV commercials, even though it's how I make my living! It seems no one likes advertising, and I can tell from server logs that some readers block the banners of ResExcellence, but how many of you? This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you block browser ads?"

All of our MacOS X tips have been placed on a single page. If you think you may have missed any, take a look.

Fun with the Clock. Many readers have written to point out how easy it is to modify the Clock face in MacOS X. The two faces, analog and digital, are TIFF images than can be found in the location shown below.

Just open them in an image editing program, and customize as Nick Mason did in the clock face on the right.

iCab has released a new version of their perpetually beta web browser! This time they have included a MacOS X version that works great. If I understand correctly, since the MacOS X version also launches under MacOS 9, then it is a Carbon application, not Cocoa. Still, every application that runs without booting Classic is a big plus!

The only face that doesn't smile at ResExcellence is iCab's!

This next MacInstruct tutorial is a two part titled, "How to make a Mac Webserver". Part one gets your domain registered and Open Transport ready with multi homing support.

Akio has updated the design of his page! Stop by to take a look at the great desktops and splash screens, but make sure you have Flash installed! Updated: The page is now also available without Flash.

User Contributed Splash Screens:
  • For Classic Mac, Mike Vannorsdel created a very nice looking Glass MOSS.

  • If you like your desktop clocks to be small, then this icon sized creation by Mio N. might be for you.

  • Alex contributes a way-cool skin for Toast. It's dark tone features a beautiful CD image.

  • Rock and Roll is the latest MOSS from MAJArch Studios. Featuring a red electric guitar, even the text elements are cool.

  • MAJArch Studios also contributed a Think Globally About this Mac replacement.

  • Not liking all the ads in the Adobe Acrobat splash screen, Daryl Sawatzky created an artistic splash of true acrobats!

  • Stephan "Frank" Korting created a nice looking Netscape splash! He also wants me to mention that his site, Frank's Corner, has shut down for the time being.

  • And here is the last Bootpanel for MacOS X in the series from Gene Van Dyke!

  • DruMMeRBoUy fired off this contribution touting Akio’s “Bio-Apple 3D” desktop picture and a synthesis of BIG Graphite and AquaGraphite for the K-Scheme. Audion, equipped with Akio’s SlickCorner Graphite face, is kicking out soundwaves in the lower left-hand corner.

  • This contribution from Oscar Marsh showcases the “DownTown” desktop picture. SoundJam, outfitted with the converted Sonicated WinAmp skin, is sitting in as digital DJ along the left edge. RailHEAD Design’s AlphaX icons along with some custom Radiohead icons are scattered throughout.

  • The custom “Latitia Casta” desktop picture is featured in this snapshot from John Montgomery along with Hideaki Kamada’s Notepaper K-Scheme. GrayAMP is taking music requests at top center. Icon.cx’s Spiffy Apps as well as a few custom icons propagate the screenshot.

  • This submission from Daniel Vera sports Akio’s “Orbs” desktop picture in combination with the Aqua Theme. Audion is playing some tunes in the upper left-hand corner, and icons from Icons.cx are also visible.

Icon/Desktop News 09-29-00 Icon & Desktop News by Jessica

Today should be the day for the desktop submissions to begin going up.  I plan to tackle the icons next.  For now, when you submit, label everything as accurately as possible. Make sure to identify yourself too, as you want to be known to your adoring public. Sizes of your submission were sometimes left out, sure I can check, and check, and keep on checking.

Icon and Desktop ArchivesThis is exciting. Was yours one of the lucky Desktops?  I think we should entertain requests.  Are there any icons you are dying for that you just can't seem to find?  E-mail me. Let us attempt to suggest (without ruffling any feathers) not demand, icons we would love to see added to the archive.  I for one can never get enough application icons. In fact I have a suggestion. You know all those great Audion Faces?  How about a matching face and icon set? Including interior files, please!

  • Akeem Williams sent this October mood, "Darkness."

  • Ward off big brother with "1984" by Andrew Van Atta.

  • Two by Frank Korting, "Fishes and Dock" so you can dream with dolphins and "Black Old Sun," for you peppy fire signs.

  • "Lizard," and "Blood Simple" by brenda von ashen, will expand your universe in reds and purples.

News From Around the Web:

Great new icons at Maumau.  I don't care if they're for kids or cute. Once I might have hated cute. When I learned that it was the cornerstone of my mother's philosophy. But I won't be denied any longer. Download all of them, including the older sets. Later build, a little like Lego, from all of the useful, chunky bold, styles, and colors. Customize to match your desktop picture d'jour. Note, when you go to select the new ones you will think the preview picture doesn't look like icons, but it is. You'll see. For those of you that can't figure out the Maumau site: here we go, follow along, not too close.. I love trips to Japan. It's an easter egg hunt. Or like looking for the big cash money passover matzo. Nahh, Maumau is easy, just go to the download text, point, click. Then, icons, point?  Click?

Ok, I've got it figured, some of the Maumau folders remind me of Ra. The French Master Musician, cartoonist, and icon man.  His site is worth living at.  Forget about surfing.  Pack your salvation army rejects and move in.  His music and animation together are mind-blowing. The icons are collectors items. Imagine having your own free piece of Picasso?  Get close, get a Raool. Find inspiration personified. I am now determined to dust the studio.  Some relatives will have to depart (not move, die!) so I can afford all the new Macromedia products:  Flash, lets see Peak, Studio 16, Deck. Forget it. Never mind me. Ra should be appreciated. Get James with attitude and the Yellow Desktop. Then send Raool some love, thanking him for all the gifts. If your wondering what the news is. It's James, he went out and bought himself almost five new suits. What a man, what a man, what a mighty, mighty, good man. Sing it.

All this jetting setting, does make one wistful. I long to be back in europe. Even Amsterdam, having coffee, chatting with Rene, from Happicon. He knows how I feel about his trash, and now the entire site is completely overhauled. It is simply too marvelous, but you must experience it for yourself, Dahlink.

Let me tell you the shoes in Amsterdam, surprising. Where did they learn shoes? Maybe it goes back to their pre feudal history. When the banks of the Red Light District were almost wiped out the entire country. The way I remember it. One clog wearing dutchman placed his foot in just the right hole, saving in the entire country. So I suppose I should consider the shoes I found lucky. They are flat, but six inches high, a combat boot, style. Killer safe, better than mace. I know, I'll sport them at Mac World S.F. Michael says we are going!! Yippee. I get to meet all my fellow wackazoids. Now that's the news.

If you didn't catch Michael's article from the 20th, it is worth your time.

This just in, Iconfactory has a brand new icon set, by resident artist Dave Brasgalla. A halloween set.
I haven't seen it, but let's race over. Ravenswood Manor, hmm.  Ravenswood Manor. I don't know. Do you think Dave would mind if I toss out some alternative titles?

So what's up WWW? Icons? Desktop pictures? Inform us! We'll post it!

Software News: by Cletus™

Gravité 2.0.1 is out by Sylvain Demongeot. If there was ever an enhancement control panel that you really do not need it is Gravité. But there has never been anything created for the Mac that is this much fun either. This popular software will add motion to your icon movement similar to the effects of gravity on objects. Your mundane, everyday workspace tasks become fun again. Just moving a simple document is a joy again. Plus it is only a postcard away from your ownership.

Gravité in action
Gravité in action! Just a swingin'!

• Compatible with "A-Dock."
• "Crash" sound is now asynchronous.
• In a certain situation, Gravite could "eat" a click. Fixed that.
• Fixed "spring" effect after "crash."

Now for a couple of Apple Scripts to make your life easier and manager your desktop. The first is suggested by Bob Friede called Window Manager. A collection of Scripts to manage how the windows of any application are handled. Some examples of the included scripts are: Arrange Windows 2.2, Tile Windows 2.2, and Stack Applications 2.2 to name just a few.

Coincidentally, another script set was updated over the weekend after Bob suggested the previous set. Both sets of script sets are by the same author — John Rethorst. This second set is called Finder Workspaces. It will allow you to set up various "workspaces" that include window arrangements and settings for the work space. Very useful for working on projects where you have a collection of windows arranged for your work. Link is courtesy of Version Tracker.

ACTION Files 1.5.4 replaces the previously released (then removed) version by PowerOn Software. An apparent bug in version 1.5.3 quickly removed this dialog box enhancement tool from the open market. PowerOn Software now offers this version as a replacement to gain the following bug fixes:

• Fixed compatibility issues with several applications including BBEdit 6, Adobe Photoshop 6, Adobe Illustrator 9, Microsoft Word 2001 and Codewarrior
• Fixed an issue that would keep some documents and items from showing up in the recent items list and the corresponding icons from displaying

A-Dock and Glidel were both updated last Friday in case you missed my updated news. A-Dock received a number of enhancements and bug fixes listed here.

This isn't GUI related in the least but it is a fine piece of software, so I want to mention it. Tex-Edit Plus is a great down and dirty word processor that I always have open to use in place of SimpleText. It is a "scriptable, styled text editor that is fast, efficient, and has a clean, uncluttered interface." Using some of the included scripts you can "clean up" the text you receive from the net or forwarded text in email. I simply use Default App to redirect everything from SimpleText to TextEdit. A version of the software is also in the alpha stage of development for Mac OS X. Download.

Speaking of Mac OS X, I hope you continue to check in on our OS X Software Archive every now and then as I have been adding much more to the archive. Have any GUI related suggestions ( apart from another Menu bar clock) and I would be glad to mention it. Drop me a note.

Themes and Schemes news:

The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive adds 9 new and 4 updated schemes to their sanctuary. A couple have been mentioned here before, but one that hasn't that is very interesting is Wyrmworks. I don't know that I would use it but it is interesting nevertheless. :)
