Configuring Eterm under KDE and Gnome

Feeling the need to take my Powerbook for an "off-road" drive, I've been running Linux quite a bit these past few days.

My goal was simple. configure Eterm under KDE.

Eterm is one of those cool transparent terminal programs you see in desktop snapshots. After downloading the package, I installed it with the command:

    rpm -i Eterm-0.8.9-1.ppc.rpm

Next, copy the folder /usr/share/Eterm to your own home directory and stick a period in the beginning of the name to make it invisible (.Eterm).

Inside the .Eterm folder is a text file called MAIN. It contains all the color settings for the terminal. Look for things like:

    menubar color Midnight Blue

Feel free to change these settings. If you screw up, you can always recopy the original back in /usr/share/Eterm.

To get the desktop to show through, you have to set it with Esetroot. I typed the following:

    Esetroot /the/path/to/your/picture.jpg

This means you do not set the background with the Desktop Control panel in either KDE or Gnome. Use those programs to set the Desktop to a color - not a wallpaper

Once the background is set, assign a menu command, or program template to execute Eterm with the following parameters:

    Eterm -O --tint 0x8080FF --shade 10 --save-under

The results can be seen in the by clicking the preview picture above.
