Change the Icons and Partition Names in MountX

MountX is a great little extension from Benjamin Herrenschmidt. It allows your Linux partitions to be visible as read-only drives under the MacOS. This comes in handy for copying files or sharing on them Appletalk network. This tutorial will show you how to change the default hard disk icon, and name of the Linux partition.

Open a copy of MountX in ResEdit and locate the CUST resources.

Open them with a double-click.

Open ID # 1002 with a double-click.

From the Find menu, select Find Hex and type MountX. In the "Change to" box, type your new name selection. Sorry, but the new name has to be exactly six characters long. in my example, it's Linux (space).

Now that you have give the partitions a new name, it's time to replace the icon. The default drive icon is stored in icon family ID#1002. Find a favorite and past it in there. Don't forget to make a Mask!

Once you have the new icon, you're done!

Replace the original extension with the modified one, and restart the computer. Your Linux partitions will now sport their new look!

Umm, this edit assumes you have LinuxPPC installed on your computer. Maybe I should have mentioned that at the beginning! :)
