Lock in the BootX kernel settings

As an administrator of a school's computer lab, you may want to lock the kernel arguments in BootX to keep students from entering a video setting that may actually damage a monitor.

The simple edit, performed on both the Extension and the Control Panel, will keep people from altering the kernel arguments.

Open a copy of the BootX extension in ResEdit.

Find the DITL resources and open them with a double-click.

Open ID 131 with a double-click.

Below is the dialog window resouce for the main BootX screen. Double-click on the kernel argument text box, and you be provided with a settings dialog box.

From the popup menu, change the text setting from Edit Text to Static Text.

Be sure to perform the modification on both the extension and the control panel.

Save your work and quit ResEdit. Replace the original files with the modified ones. The control panel is ready to use immediately.

You may want to stuff the original control panel in a password protected archive in case you need to change your kernel arguments.

Look Ma! I can't change my kernel arguments!
