REALbasic: Resizable Sheets by Seth Willits

rbnewslogo.jpg (9k)

Everyone knows that sheets simply rock. While REALbasic sheets have gotten better through the last several updates of REALbasic, one thing they still don't support is being resizable. Well today, we're going to fix that.

Yes, that really is all I have to say.     :^)

Wednesday 03-17-2004 Software Update Icons/Desktops REALbasic

Software Update by Scott Chitwood

Sure, I decide to take Wednesdays as a regularly scheduled day off and half the planet goes nuts with software news :) The fat cat is Mac OS X 10.3.3 which I installed at work this morning on my 400 mhz iMac G3. First impressions are it seems to be a bit zippier, the big thing I noticed right away was the new dialog for mounting network servers and once they were up, having the servers available in the sidebar and desktop is way convenient.

  • It's real nice to see someone creating great looking File Type Icons, as they tend to get neglected in icon collections. Beata Serkowiak created seventeen commonly used types to be used file as elegant replacements. Hopefully she will continue working on extending this set to a full blown series!

  • Gonaki sends us a set of fourteen sharp looking icons created from recent and popular Anime series. Only one icon was "picked" from a "Manga".

  • Quick Tag by SoulRocka Nasty Nene is the next cool desktop in his evolving "Environment" series of desktops. The photograph was taken while Nene was coming home from Manhattan one day. A quickie name tag was added in Photoshop. He would have done it with a real Kylon spray can, but as soon as you come out of this station, the police station is right in front of your face, and mad cops might be chilling outside. It was too dangerous, and he wouldn't want to get buck shot 41 times either. This one comes in 1024x resolution.

  • Cover your desktop with a Forest of glossy clover created by Flameia Design. Just in time for Saint Patrick's Day, this one comes in 1024x and 1280x resolutions.

  • The folks over at Digikitten keep on sending us loads of great desktops to share with ResExcellence readers. Creatures of the Moon by Ivory Ocean is the next fine desktop from this ongoing display, and is available in 1024x resolution.

  • Sniper decided a few more potent words about Women might just help the beast get a handle on the fairer sex. Check out this three picture set and decide for yourself. These are available in 1280x resolution.

  • Power to the people! Apple's latest bad boy Power MacG5 appears in this desktop made by Jörg Schneider, available in 1024x and 1280x resolutions.

  • What the heck??? Intelect-5000 by The Madd Fajita is certainly a unique concept in desktop decoration. The download includes four different desktops in a series, which if installed in sequence and activated on a time schedule, will simulate the appearance of animation. The included read me file will do a much better job of explaining how this works. This one is available in 1024x and 1280x resolutions.

MacMonkies updates with their Lucky 7 St. Patty's Day Desktop Edition! This week's edition includes 7 New Desktops from William D. REALbasic: Seth's Big List of Gripes by Seth Willits

rbnewslogo.jpg (9k)

REALbasic is an awesome development environment. Everytime I sit down to write a new program, I think about which language and evironment I should write it in. For me, there are always the same three major choices: Cocoa, Carbon, or REALbasic and while I have written Carbon apps and I have written Cocoa apps (err, well worked on them mostly), at the end of the day I still choose REALbasic for the vast majority of my projects.

There are, however, three major drawbacks to using REALbasic: limitations, bugs, and more bugs. I am a huge supporter of REALbasic, violently defending it at all costs, and I have nothing but the highest respect for every employee at REAL Software, but there comes a time in every RB-using man's life where he just needs to speak out, revealing the things which bother him most, and ask for them to be solved so that he may code on with the fiery passion that once filled his ticker.

My friends, I have reached this stage through an obtuse angle. Most everything I have done in REALbasic and continue to do are awesome simple to create and (for the most part) quite stable. However, there are three features introduced in REALbasic 5 and 5.5 which are simply lacking in the polish and care that they deserve. These features are: drawers and composite windows, combo boxes, and toolbars.

While there are many other features I wish could be expanded or refined, I feel that these three bother me the most, because there the three I wish to use extensively in new applications but either they don't sport the features they should have from the beginning (ComboBox), don't allow me to expand on them myself or better yet do it for me (toolbars), or I cannot use them at all (drawers and composite windows).

Below is a list of bug reports and feature requests (which I will add to as I see fit) which are primarily related to the three features above. I am posting them here in hopes that you and others who may read this will see these reports and support their resolution as soon as possible (i.e. 5.6). Were these reports to all be resolved in a future update, I can assure you that the quality of Mac OS X applications able to be developed with REALbasic would increase significantly. So, I, Seth Willits, President, CEO, and Janitor of Freak Software, REALbasic Guru at ResExcellence, former writer for REALbasic Developer Magazine, proud user of REALbasic since 2.1.2, and quirky weird guy who wears an Apple hat every day hereby challenge you to voice your opinion to REAL Software to resolve these issues! I confess, I'm a lover, not a fighter, but I do get a kick out of rallying the troops every now and again. ;^)

Copy and Paste Custom Icons In Panther
Now that I'm finally up and running in Panther at work, without the benefit of third party apps to enhance the user interface, I'm finding little things here and there that I may not have otherwise noticed. One of Panther's big strengths compared to earlier releases of Mac OS X is that copying and pasting icons in the Finder are almost as easy as it was in OS 9 and ealier. What I didn't realize was icons within the home folder and root level of the drive can be changed just as easy as a user created folder is. There are a few exceptions but a quick change of permissions via File > Get Info has so far worked for me on everything except the OS 9 Desktop and Network icons.

Home and root folders, hit images to view full size in new window.

Another thing that's a new work method for me under Panther is that I use a single Finder window for navigating my local hardrive, external usb disk and our Windows network. The sidebar is functioning great as replacement for OS 9's pop-up folders. I've also found that keeping open and save dialogs confined to two columns speeds things up quite a bit.

My desire to say something nice about Apple!
by Cletus™

During my time at ResExcellence readers will remember I got my share of "complaints" in, if you will, about Apple. There have been times when I have been very complimentary to them also. Probably the most recent being the release of iCal 1.5.2, which finally fixed the "No Alarm" problem I was having. They must have heard my complaints, because Apple emailed and asked if I would be interested in helping test 1.5.2 based on my problems. I obliged by beta testing.

December of 2003 I purchased a 20" cinema display. Beautiful monitor. Right out of the box however, I experienced a blinking light on the front of the display. According to the manual, the blinking code represented a problem with one of the "back-lamps". In looking at the monitor there was no back-lamp out. I ran the hardware test disk, and it also said there was no problem. I called Apple. They said to send it back in. However, later in the day while playing around with it, unplugging and plugging it back in, and numerous restarts, it cured itself. I called Apple again and they said to hold sending it in.

One week later it returned, and this time the back-lamp WAS out across the top. I called Apple and told them I was sending it in. Five days later it was returned, and they found nothing wrong. UGH! I plugged it in and sure enough, it functioned without problems— until earlier last week. Lamp out, blinking returned. Once again I called Apple. They ran me through several tests, called the engineers for me, and asked I send it back in. They asked me if I could hook it to another machine. I used a computer at the college where I work, and it worked fine. Now what? Brought it home and it worked fine on my machine also. Oh boy. I reported this to Apple and they said to sit tight and would get back to me in a week. I said OK. One business day later they called. They would send me a new monitor. There initially was a concern it could be my video card, but based on my symptoms they ruled this out. Great!

Everyone I dealt with over the phone was extremely nice. The most recent person was Al, who was extremely helpful and pleasant to deal with. He asked me to test some things, which I did, and likewise he looked into some things at his end. My point is that we worked together to figure it out. We both put in an effort. I did not call and insist on a new monitor and they did not simply say it was the video card and that is that. I have read many times of poor support being given at Apple, but I am hear to say that in dealing with this problem, and a number of different people at Apple, they were nothing short of professional, respectful, knowledgeable and realistic. I just wanted to give them their due.

Odds and Ends
Whilst wandering around distributed.net I saw this page where they show a breakdown of processors and the operating systems that have actively contributed computing power to breaking encryption codes. About midway down the list it clearly shows an Intel X86 processor alongside Mac OS X, very interesting...

Macintosh Explorer 4.0 Speeds Up File Navigation
Macintosh Explorer brings the hierarchal navigation system of Windows Explorer to the Mac. Complete with file management tools to edit extended file information, back up documents and batch change file information, Macintosh Explorer combines a file browser with a multitude of powerful file management tools to help keep your files organized and a click away.

Macintosh Explorer 4.0 is a major upgrade offering much faster file navigation as well as three new file views including icon view, detailed list view and list view. It also offers customization of the file icon size as well as the ability to keep files arranged depending on certain characteristics such as kind, size or creation/modification date.

BackLight Updated to version 2.0
BackLight provides a menu extra that allows you to use screensavers as your desktop background. It can also change your screensaver and open the preferences. Having your screensaver on your desktop is quite a cool effect, but you should probably have a Quartz Extreme-capable machine if you want to handle the load.

BackLight is quite nifty and fun, I can highly recommend using it with the Plasma Tunnel ScreenSaver :)

New features...

  • Optimized for both dialup and broadband connections,
  • TURBOCHARGED downloading,
  • Auto-resuming downloads,
  • Track downloading history,
  • Up to the minute updates for all Macintosh apps,
  • Switch between aqua and metallic appearance,
  • Fully customizable interface,
  • and much more.

Captain FTP 3.2
The powerful, and refreshing features of Captain FTP such as Server to Server file transfer, Resuming, Transfer Manager, Rendezvous, and Accelerated transfers have been used as the base to develop and further improve Captain FTP. Because of this, the newest version 3.2, is more powerful, and user-friendly than ever.

Some of the highlights in this new version of Captain FTP include providing the user with the ability to enter commands via the command line, and a helpful progress bar visible in the dock when Captain FTP windows are minimized. Captain FTP has increased functionality from the addition of new connection methods for proxy/firewall server logins, and by adding extra columns for domain and IP addresses for Rendezvous.

Polling Place by Scott Chitwood

poll gifThe question was; What software tracking website do you use most?

VersionTracker wins hands down out-pacing the other software tracking sites by a considerable margin. I do make a point to see what's been posted at VT or one of the other big sites most days. My answer in the poll was for 'Other' because I'd rather have an app that uses a built-in software updater or be notified via email when a new version has been released.

I personally never developed a habit for using the Sherlock app in Mac OS other than a way to search local disks, and I really disliked how bloated and slow it seemed to its precursor, 'Find'. When Panther was released Find was carved off of Sherlock's back, returning it back to its former unbloated state. There's no arguing the fact that Sherlock's feature set lets you do some neat things but for my work habits it's an app that never gets lauched. Is that a mistake? Am I missing something by not using Sherlock?

The question is; Do you use Sherlock?

Do you have an idea for poll question that you'd like to see us ask?
Send it my way!

WOA: Rev 2 Drives is available today from The Iconfactory Showroom for either Mac, Win or as a handy Pixadex iContainer.

So what's up WWW? Icons? Desktop Pictures? News? Inform us! We'll post it!
*The desktop and icon archive is updated three times a week. The work is actually done on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings for publishing the following day. If you want a news item posted the same day, try and get it to me before 6 pm on any one of those evenings. THANKS!
