The great experiment: Many ISP's are imposing size restrictions for out going email attachments. This has kept some of you from contributing some of your larger files to ResExcellence. To help, ResExcellence now provides an ftp drop box.

Just login using your favorite ftp program, and upload your files. Immediately after uploading, you will see your file in the drop box, but if you log back in or refresh the directory, it will be hidden.

Please be sure to send the appropriate editor a followup email with a description and the name of the file, letting us know that you uploaded.

Remove the Startup Animation and Sound from Hotline 1.8

Mike Orticari didn't like the the little startup animation and sounds that he had to endure everytime he lunched Hotline 1.8. His simple edit will show you to remove it. (Continued...)

During dinner last night, I found myself inexplicably shaping my mashed potatoes into a strangely familiar form. As pulled the fork away to gaze at my creation, I realized the spuds had formed the AOL logo. As I went to scrape my whipped creation into the trash, I noticed that on the bottom of the wastebasket was a removable Jazz cartridge. It contained the a patch to remove the advertisements from AOL Instant Messenger 4.0. The READ ME said:

I was in the galactic neighborhood to catch up on the Microsoft trial and though I would drop this off. BTW, ResExcellence is the number one web site on Alpha Centauri.

186,000 miles per second. It's not just a good idea, it's the law.

Enjoy,
The Mysterious Being known as phydeaux.

User Contributed Splash Screens:

  • Have you ever wanted to make something "Aqua", but you graphics skills were not up to the task? Mark Evans makes it easier by contributing four colorful Aqua button Photoshop templates.

  • Titled "The Rebirth of Cool", Brian Freeman sent this Giant MOSS featuring the iMac DV.

  • Peter McHugh converted the throbber from Netscape 6 for you to use under version 4.7.

  • The first of its kind, Ian Jungling created a nice looking replacement splash for Quicken.

  • Richard Hamilton created this MOSS that is not your average Aqua look. The preview doesn't do it justice.

  • Last update it was Britany Spears, this time it's that Taco Bell dog. What's the world coming to!! Check out the annoying pooch in this Explorer 5 splash by Brad Gosse.

  • Ryan Oehler sent in this snapshot featuring the Martini desktop picture from MacDesktops and the Aqua K-Scheme. SoundJam, configured with the Drop skin, is running in the upper left-hand corner and the famous 1984 commercial is debuting in the QuickTime Player in the lower left-hand corner.

  • Chris Fournier submitted this sleek screenshot showing off the eWater desktop picture from ResExcellence’s own Desktop Archive. SoundJam, configured with the AquaX skin, is running in the lower left-hand corner, and the icons are part of the “High Level Distraction” iPack for the icon replacement utility, iControl.

  • Javier Vega submitted this screenshot touting the “Simply Milano” desktop picture and Blood K-Scheme. SoundJam MP, configured with a really cool skin, is running along the right side, but something tells me that wasn’t the intended focal point of this snapshot…

  • This submitter, known only as Cotton, contributed this snapshot featuring the Aqua Theme. SoundJam, configured with the Drop skin, is running towards the bottom. Bernhard Feurstein’s “Aqua OS9” ATM hack is displayed in the upper left-hand corner.

  • Mike Chen contributed this snapshot with a custom desktop picture based on Japanese Manga Houshin Engi along with the Sugar Plate IV K-Scheme. SoundJam MP, configured with the Soliloquy skin, is running along the bottom edge, and a Chinese name in orange and red is next to the hard drive icons.

  • Jeffrey Stowell sent in this dual-monitor screenshot featuring a G4 desktop picture from MacDesktops and a mirror of it. Very cool setup!

Software News: by Cletus™

Jerome Foucher has updated two of his excellent programs and released a new one. His newest shareware is called A-Dock. It's the Application Switcher on steroids. It behaves like a drawer, supports drag&drop, lets you quit or hide applications via contextual menus, has skin support, and gives access to application's windows if Wapp pro is installed (but ADock works great without Wapp pro). If the readers like this and want it added to the Archive let me know.

Picture of A-Dock with Aqua Skin from the A-Dock Page

Jerome's updated programs include: Wapp pro v2.7 which now takes advantage of the new program A-Dock and DeskTray v2.0. Desktray received the most updates and feature additions:

No more limit of 5 alternate folders, multi-screen support, it's now possible to change the active list during drag&drop, the list only rebuilds if necessary (folder modified), Improved speed on slow systems, added a zone that shows information about selected items, added some animation's when using disclosure triangles, added an option to display each volume's root folder instead of each volume's desktop folder and sub-menus that shows folders content now work on volumes and on folders from the right list. Fixed the double-click bug and the tray no longer appears during the log-in screen among several others.

Please note: Because of a problem with his FTP, Jerome had trouble getting this new version of Desktray uploaded yesterday despite the announcement it was up. Make sure you have the final version 2.0 and not version 2.0 beta 1.

NewFolderHere!, the final word from the author:

Thanks for your interest in NewFolderHere. Unfortunately, I've stopped supporting/developing this extension due to time constraints, so I will not be releasing an OS 9 version.

MacFixIt reported the other day a conflict with Magnet Menu.

From Gadget Software as posted on the MacFixIt page: "There was a serious bug in Magnet Menu v2.2: we tried to put an auto-detector to detect AutoMenus Pro, but apparently it isn't working. We removed this feature and the bug is now fixed." Thanks to MacFixIt for the heads up on this!

I also received a couple of emails concerning the conflict listed above. Gadget Software now lists the program back at version 2.1 on their homepage so I have also dropped it back on the Archive page.

Themes.org has posted it's newest themes and screenshots, so top over to check them out.

Themes and Schemes news:

Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has posted 16 new and 20 updated schemes on it's page. Grafito i, IrieMac, The Deep and Palladium are the ones that look coolest to me!

Peter Harte has updated his Aqua I and II schemes to fix a returning bug from back in version 1.6: If you drag an object into a finder drawer tab and happen to touch the bottom line on the screen, the drawer is popping in and out and in and out... This has been Fixed and Updated (again).

Here is a clever way to use Applescripts with Outlook Express 5 from Hes Nikke:

I have a simple Applescript for you; it's a one liner!

say "there is new mail in your in box" using "Trinoids"

I got board with OE's noises so I turned them off and went into the Rules. For different situations, I have it run scripts like the one above. It works great and I know when new mail is coming and going! Now the only thing I want OE to do is let me run apple scripts on mailing list Rules... oh well!

In case you never used them, OE5 Rules are email filters that you can create to trigger a variety of actions when the text of the email matches the rule!

MacInstruct has posted a new tutorial titled: "Sharing Our New Found Knowledge". It outlines how to combine several Macintosh graphical abilities into a single Graphics Power! Even the veterans will learn something from this one.

Opps. Sometimes I always seem to figure out the hard way to do something - like disabling Indexing under Sherlock. Chuck Huckabee describes a much better way :

The true and correct way to disable "Find By Content" is to open Sherlock, and go to "Find/Index Volumes" (or hit Command-L) and uncheck the "Use Schedule" box. (Yeah, go figure Apple wouldn't put it somewhere where it made SENSE, like in the PREFERENCES!)

You get no error messages that way, and that pesky Indexing will never bother you again.

Hey! Is Chuck slamming me there! :) I guess I deserved it.

Rick Roe from icons.cx has been busy! He has posted icons sets and more splash screens for Internet Explorer. Can a makeover skin be far behind?

Want to learn more about making MacOS Splash Screens (MOSS)? Rick "The Cougar" Bargerhuff" has put together a nice tutorial for you to download. It refers to two MOSS templates that you can find here: Regular and Giant.

User Contributed Splash Screens:

  • Duane Miller created a big ol' Smilin' Mac MOSS that you may like!

  • How about a Newton throbber for Internet Explorer? It was made by John Schilling.

  • For those of you who aren't old enough to buy beer, Sean Dervan created this Britany Spears MOSS. :)

  • In the style of the original IE 4.5 splash, Lucas Everett created this splash for IE5.

  • Fans of the X-Files will like this Eudora splash by Mark Corrigan.

  • Here's a Giant MOSS by Peter McHugh with a rainbow Apple logo.

Snapshot Gallery by Jeremy Hoesly

  • Peter McHugh, a regular ResExcellence contributor, submitted another screenshot, this time with a custom desktop picture and the Sugar Plate IV K-Scheme. QuickTime Player, featuring one of his QuickTime skins, is in the background.

  • Deborah Shadovitz, author of MacCentral’s Mac Efficiency articles, submitted this snapshot of her desktop as she works on a new book for IDG, Adobe GoLive 4 Bible. Although more minimalistic to provide a computing environment conducive to book screenshots, various system enhancements are still present in this snapshot.

  • South Park fever is rampant in this screenshot submitted by Elan Pfalzgraf, alias “the Hotdog.” A collage of South Park movie mockups from Sweeet.com comprise the desktop picture, and the Platino K-Scheme leaves its mark on the interface.

  • Tyron Washington sent in this snapshot displaying Waferbaby’s “Bleubaby” desktop picture along with the Allegro Themes Project’s Neutech Theme. Some gorgeous icons inhabit a dock at the bottom.

  • Odin submitted this screenshot featuring a custom desktop picture consisting of elements from various sources as well as the Co-Pilot K-Scheme. The border was taken from one of Blue Sky Heart’s pictures, and the submarine-like picture was extracted from Arnold Sakowski’s “Kalender 3” at 3deurope.com. The bald man in the corner came from the Aegean skin for SoundJam. Quite impressive!

  • Tehrasha Darkon submitted this screenshot of an old NeXT workstation running NeXTStep 3.2. The original File Viewer is open in the upper right-hand corner while an early browser, OmniWeb, is visible in the center. Even though the screenshot is grayscale, it’s still cool to see some of the original concepts that are now being incorporated into Mac OS X.

Markus Bruch wanted me to add Smart Window to the archive as he considers it an indispensable program. Smart Window will allow you to drag an item over a collapsed window's title bar and have it spring open. You can then navigate to any of the folders within and release the item, which will then be moved or copied to that folder. Thanks Markus!

The musical folks at Gadget Software have emailed me to announce several updates and revisions to their software. (I love those little tracking balls on the site! First up, is that Magic Power Menu has been renamed to Magnet Menu because they like that name better. The icon has also been redone for the product.

Second is that they have updated Faster! to version 2.0. Gadget writes: This release should be much more stable, and a troubleshooting assistant is now there to help you, plus, you can configure CPU tasking, amongst other new features. They have also released version 1.0 for the PeeCee.

MojoMonkey has released version 1.1 of iBar. iBar is a "net savvy" launcher that will also provide access to applications, documents, favorites, bookmarks and music. You can also check for e-mail and "provide a single unified bookmarks menu for all the web browser installed on your system." Sounds cool. If anyone has tried this out please send in a report and if you like it I can add it to the archive.

OneClick has posted new upload submissions for their macro utility. Recent uploads include: NavServices Extension, Alerts Extension, Hard Disk Gauge (aqua) Palette and Banner Palette v1.1.

Themes and Schemes news:

Marcos Lopez has posted a new theme preview at Mac Things from Riverbed Software called Metal.

Ben Mackin is currently working on an update to Liquid which will fix several outstanding bugs. He expects to post the final product in a day or two so keep an eye out for this.

As I suspected, demand for the ability to search for any text on your drive has diminished since indexing made its debut in MacOS 8.5. My personal reasons for disabling it were the time it took to index, and the size of the invisible index database.

There was one time though, when I really needed to find a file, but could remember only a few phrases of the text. Sherlock's indexing found it ASAP (after waiting hours for the drive to index! :)

Incidentally, if you wish to disable indexing, disable the "Find By Content" extension. The next time you use Sherlock, you will get an error message, but it will be surpressed in subsequent searches.

With the increasing popularity of Napster and its clones, MP3 audio tracks are once again in the news. Universities have banned its use, Metallica is suing Napster, and CD burners are working overtime. This week's Polling Place asks, "Have you downloaded copyrighted mp3 music?".

Two familiar names to ResEx readers have teamed up to bring you something special! phydeaux and sysinfo have released a comprehensive kit to create, manage, and install skins for Internet Explorer 5!

The kit features Photoshop templates and filters, ResEdit templates for all the appropriate resources, and Applescripts to automate many tasks. Everything you need can be found here. The site also has a message board so skin creators can meet and exchange tips.

And if you're not in line to become a skin creator, still visit the site and download the basic package to get some of the first skins and checkout Lecter.

Lecter is an AppleScript droplet written for the purpose of applying custom skins to Internet Explorer 5. This makes it easy for both the average user and skin developers to quickly change appearance data in IE's resource and data forks, as well as in preference files. Lecter copies resource data from a 'skin' file into the IE app, and deletes certain resources in the 'Internet Preferences' file. This process is repeatable, and not dependent on a fresh copy of IE. With different Internet Preference resource types and IDs in different versions of the Mac OS, an AppleScript solution has an edge over standard patchers.

A big tip-o-the-hat to these gents for all the work they've put into this.

While phydeaux and sysinfo have made IE5 skins easier to create, you will still want to read this excellent tutorial by Derek Scott. It provides tons of information on the raw ResEdit resources and their format.

Beta 5 of the wacky Applescript/Plaintalk version of Hamlet has been released by Charles Mangin!

Dan sent this link for a Japanese User Interface site called C-ROCK. In the Archive sections are lots of Macintosh goodies.

Dr. Bob sent this page full of actual Microsoft Window's error messages. Ok, so they're not real error messages, but they're so funny because we can believe they are real!

After the posting of a MOSS by Seba, Jean-Jacques Cortes answers the question, "Who the heck is Barapapa?"

Barbapapa is a sort of candy made with sugar which is like cotton. Ok, you say "I know what is barbapapa, thank you. I eat barbapapa each time I visit a entertainment park", but what you don't know is the fact Barbapapa was an animated serial of the seventies, which tell about the adventure of a strange character "Barbapapa" and his family (his wife
Babamama, and their seven children). The particularity of these characters is they can take any form they want.

And I though Pokemon were annoying...

Tired of trying to tell Grandma how to electronically send her bowling pictures to you? Well, MacInstruct has published a new tutorial. "How to Send Attachments in E-mail Messages"!

If you use a replacement splash for Internet Explorer, there is an interesting Forum thread that discusses removing the Copyright text from on top of the image.

  • Here in Chicago, spring has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere, but in the Southern Hemisphere, the chill is in the Australian air, keeping folks inside. That must account for this flood of recent submissions from Peter McHugh!

  • Denny Jr created this attractive splash screen for Internet Explorer 5.

  • If you have an iMac (and who doesn't!), this nice looking About this Mac replacement by Mike Orticari may be for you!

  • Jonathan Signor submitted this screenshot featuring the “G4 Metal” desktop picture from ResExcellence’s own Desktop Archive. A video signal of the Japanese movie, “The Princess Mononoke,” is running in ixTV, and the QuickTime Player is playing the final scene of the PlayStation game, Final Fantasy VI.

  • Russ Boucher is back again with another snapshot, this time with the “Wild Things” desktop picture and Aqua K-Scheme. Greg’s Browser provides the OS X-style browser view. Audion, configured with the X Fusion skin, is running at the bottom of the screen.

  • Bart van de Biezen sent this dual monitor snapshot sporting a custom desktop picture spanning both monitors. SoundJam MP is running in the upper left-hand corner with the Reintegration skin. Internet Explorer is open in the center of the left screen.

  • Robert Erwin contributed this dual monitor snapshot running Windows 98 under emulation in Virtual PC on the left screen and the Mac OS on the right screen. The custom desktop picture “Myopia” spans both monitors. Very cool!

  • Mel Vildirim submitted this snapshot touting the “X=Aqua” desktop picture and Aqua 9 Theme. Audion, configured with the Aqua skin, is running at the top of the screen, and Netscape Communicator, with a complete makeover, is also open.

  • Evan Sharp was feeling blue with this screenshot, featuring the “Alien Planet” desktop picture along with the Geometry Theme, both from POWER/Mac. Macast is also decked out with a custom skin to complement the theme. Additionally, icons from Icon Factory and Perfect Yosemite propagate the screen.

Software News: by Cletus™

I installed Mac OS 9.0.4 over the weekend. Although I am not so sure I needed to install it, I had extra time if something went wrong so I dove in — head first — and I ain't the best of swimmers either. However, a friend of mine was talking it up so much on AOL IM and convincing me that nothing broke for him that it gave me extra courage.

I just barely sat back from updating the hard disk drivers and clicking the install button before it asked for a restart and stated installation had been successful. I was almost certain something had gone wrong. It couldn't have gone that quick! Everything was fine upon restart however. In fact it reported my system was using only 22.5MB. It normally uses 28.3MB. So off to Conflict Catcher I went and found everything in order. Hmm!? A new OS that uses less memory? I am very happy with the memory usage thus far. I have a base of 160MB Ram and use Virtual memory set to 161MB.

My initial impressions are very good. In fact absolutely nothing unusual happened. I did not rebuild the desktop even though I probably should. I did run Norton's Utilities and it reported nothing except some icon bundle bits set wrongly after the install. I have a good 12 hours of normal use with no problems and no freezes. I have even restarted on purpose 6 times because I read of some problems happening only have a couple of restarts. I should point out, I run very lean and have everything updated to the newest versions. I will agree with my friend that it feels snappier and thus far much more stable then the base 9.0 version. Of course I have read that this is not the case for all users. But I am glad it is for me! :)

Now on with the news:

Peter Harte has updated his Aqua Schemes to version 2.0. He has added icons, changed utility windows (a la OSX) and fine tuned different resources.

Bob Friede found NewFolderHere! doesn't work in MacOS 9 and Andrew Gara confirms for us that it also fails in 9.0.4, which makes sense. Andrew has asked if there is a possible replacement for this. I don't know of any. Our only hope is for an update and Bob reports that the author responded to his e-mail with a "too busy to update it" response. Perhaps in the future he will find time.

Ben Mackin has posted a version of Liquid Metal (Liquid Graphite) theme with icons. Additionally he has posted three screenshots to give users an idea of the look of his three themes.

The Mac Themes Project has updated its site by posting two new themes to their site. Tubular Sky Paper and Traffic.

The World of Mac Themes on the other hand has done an about face and closed its doors. Michael Rabe reports a lack of time to run the site along with Doghouse Online. Therefore he will continue with Doghouse Online and support his themes there.

ALM & AR has released another set of Icon Stamps called "Super Drop Chips" for theiricon gif software Icon Tools. If you have never used this software it is very cool. It is a CMM plug-in that will allow you to place "symbolic stamps" onto existing icons. It is jointly developed and distributed by Alessandro Levi Montalcini and Riccisoft.

Lots of browser talk today. I can't say enough good things about iCab 2.0. I was skeptical when I saw a beta release jump version numbers, but it may have been justified. The "Little Browser that Could" handles java well, plug-ins, and runs in almost half the memory of Explorer 5.

Oddly enough, the latest Mozilla build, M15, seems to run faster and is more stable than PR1, but AOL better put some money and developers into the project, or this puppy will never be ready for Prime Time!

There have been any interesting developments with Internet Explorer 5. Many of ResExcellence's best hackers are dissecting the application, and their efforts are bearing fruit.

Robert Percival offers a makeover kit in an Aqua shade of blue. His ResEdit elements can be installed with a simple cut and paste.

Derek Scott's Red makeover for Explorer is a little more involved, but also provides a large text tutorial outlining the resources involved and how to create your own modifications.

Two other hackers are putting the finishing touches on a nine template package that includes Applescripts to aid in the creation of Internet Explorer Skins. Barring any last minute hitches, watch for the release on Monday.

Little Ice Cubes from the Linux Icebox

Andrew Arthur has this to add to the tutorial on Netscape's highlight color:

If you use KDE 1.1.2 and Netscape 4.7, you can make Netscape use your color settings, by going to K Menu -> Settings -> Desktop -> Style and checking Apply fonts and colors to non-KDE apps. You will then need to either logout and relogin, or hit option-F2 then type 'kcontrol -init' and restart Netscape. It should then use the same colors and fonts your
KDE apps are set to -- especially nice if you use a non-standard grey color theme in KDE. You can change the colors (including the select color) in the KDE colors dialog. I love this feature, it makes Netscape look pretty and blend into my KDE desktop!

When Apply fonts and colors to non-KDE apps is applied, it should work give you the same fonts and colors as your KDE apps, in basically everything -- excluding gtk+ apps (which aren't currently supported by this feature -- since they use a non-standard configuration format). This includes motif, athena, tk and probably a few other apps that have a pretty much standard color arguments.

I don't know how I missed that setting, but it makes many applications, especially gnome programs, become more KDE friendly.

Regarding power management and sleep on Powerbooks under LinuxPPC, Rob Worman adds that it's a good idea to put the hard disk into standby mode before the computer goes to sleep:

hdparm -y puts the drive in standby
hdparm -S $seconds sets the idle time before the system automatically puts the drive in standby

Just make a little bash script with the hdparm command followed by snooze.

With Ilona in Hungary, I'm covering a little icon news! Rick Roe from icons.cx dropped us a line to fill readers in on their latest developments, and you'll like what you see!

Everybody's wondering why icons.cx has been so quiet lately, so here's a sample of what we've been up to:

We're in the process of updating the majority of our sets for Mac OS X; when the new operating system comes out this summer, you'll be able to download almost all of our more popular icon sets (and several new ones) in the new 128x128 format. Several of our icons take advantage of the ability to put two icons in the same file, so that it looks good on the Dock as well as on the desktop.

If you're running Developer Preview 3, you can download our Spiffy Apps III set (or get OmniWeb or OmniPDF 4.0 to see our works in the new icon format. The rest of our updated (and new) sets will arrive this summer in time for the full release of Mac OS X.

In addition, responding to readers wishes, Rick has also updated his beautiful Explorer splash for all nine Explorer color sets.

User Contributed Splash Screen:

  • I don't know who Barbapapa is, but Seba created a MOSS screen featuring the little animated critter.

  • Sébastien Lavoie created a makeover kit for MacAmp. I don't know what the original program looks like, but Sébastien's new look is nice!

  • "Buddy" has been berry busy. He made two similar splash screens, one for Netscape, one for Explorer. They feature a cartoon kid with an Apple t-shirt.

  • This MOSS by David Messick features a heavenly Angel.

  • Selma Hayek is featured in this Eudora splash by Shadow Warrior.

Snapshot Gallery by Jeremy Hoesly

  • Andreas Standfest submitted this screenshot featuring a custom desktop picture along with Ablie Wong’s Extra Virgin K-Scheme. Macast, configured with the RackAmp skin, is running in the lower left-hand corner.

  • Jim Dusbiber sent in this snapshot touting the desktop picture for the now banned Gizmo Theme. Gerry’s ICQ is residing on the left-hand side of the screen and SoundJam MP with the AquaX skin is running in the middle.

  • Jade Barton likes to run it all! In this screenshot can be seen the Mac OS, Windows 98, and RedHat Linux all simultaneously! The Get Happy desktop picture can be seen in the background.

  • Kuzey Atici has provided us with this snapshot touting the Metal Mac desktop picture as well as a matching ATM and the NeXTheme Theme. Also visible are some custom system replacement icons and Buzz Lightyear, Bart Simpson, and Metal Mac 2 desktops.

  • Kin Camacho appears to be quite the videoconferencer in this snapshot. In the foreground, CU-SeeMe provides video feeds for five participants, and if that isn't enough, both ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger are open in the background, poised for conversation! Sheesh!

Kinetic Creations Inc. has released version 1.1.2 of Export Icon which is an Adobe Photoshop® Plug-in. From the Kinetic homepage:

The Export Icon Plug-in works with 32x32 pixel, RGB Photoshop images. The plug-in creates the custom icon's icl8 and icl4 resources from the RGB image (with optional dithering). The custom icon's black and white mask is created from the image's transparency (also with optional dithering)

They say it better then I could. :) I have added this to the Icon Tools Archive.

Bob Friede is reporting that NewFolderHere! is not working with Mac OS 9. I have fired off an e-mail to the author asking for more information. I will report back anything I find out. If anyone else knows anything on this please let me know.

Markus Bruch has suggested "a neat little Shareware program called "Smart Windows" It comes in both 68K and PPC versions. Formerly called Smooth Move, it will provide translucent dragging of windows. Unfortunately the most recent update of the program states compatibility for only 8.6. Despite this, I plan on adding it over the next week to the archive since many people still use 8.6.

Marcos Lopez, Founder and Editor of Mac Things, has posted a preview of a new Theme he is currently working on called "Echo" Is it me or did it seem like for a while there were no themes and now they are coming out right and left. Great!

The Japanese Scheme Archive has posted a couple of very nice K-schemes. I especially like AquaMoon"SilentDeep.

Themes.org has posted 5 new themes and 3 new screenshots you probably will want to check out.

Have a nice weekend!

Icon Archive: One new set!

I have found the way to post a contribution I received a long time ago. It was a huge file but since it's been divided to three categories, I'll present them to you in three series. The icons are from Tychobrahe and contain some images from his favorite artist, Dave McKean. The first one you see is "DMK's Blue"!

Desktop Archive: Three new pictures!

If you want to rest your eyes on a pleasant landscape, Michael Addison's next picture, Buninyong is for you! If you wish to have a PowerBook (at least on your desktop), Mike Orticari's "Pismo" is your picture! And if you are a cat lover, Lynn Connoly's charming little "Cat" will make you very happy.

Thanks to everyone! Enjoy. And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions!

Iconfactory has released "Myth II - Soulblighter". An icon set created by the wonderful Dave Brasgalla! I don't think I need to say anything, the icons speak for themselves!

World of Kaos is not closing, only preparing for a massive site reconstruction, but Soren prepared a tiny set of Easter icons for you to enjoy.

Spy updated with "B2 : Boogaloo Circus" icons!

What's new on your site? Icons? Desktop pictures? Inform us! We'll post it!

Mike S. sent this note regarding iCab and our Popup menus that use Javascript.

On the front page you mention iCab 2.0 is available but say that it lacks full support of javascript so pop up menus at Resexcellence still won't work.

While it's true that it's javascript implementation is still incomplete, I successfully used the pop up menus in the software archive and desktop pictures area. This is great news as iCab is now able to navigate just about every site I go to.

iCab does ship with Inscript/Javascript disabled by default so maybe that is why the menus didn't work for you.

User Contributed Splash Screen:

  • Here a couple of more submissions from Strigmaga in his Fathom anime series. There's a nice looking Explorer splash and one for Hotline.

  • You can't read the type in the preview, but Taylor put together a clever MOSS called Planets that pokes fun at the worlds latest monopoly.

  • Reagan Denius from Amplexus created this great looking MutliUser login replacement based on the EvaOS MOSS.

  • Here's one for the kiddies! Kuzey Atici put together this cute MOSS featuring Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story.

  • Paul Thiem, one of our regular contributers, submitted this snapshot displaying the “DC Hub” desktop picture from Blue Sky Heart along with Railhead Design’s Mac QNX K-Scheme. Stir in some icons from Railhead and Icon Factory, and you have a recipe for a masterpiece.

  • Gary Burnett contributed this screenshot touting Blue Sky Heart’s “DC Applesauce” and the Graphite IV K-Scheme. SoundJam MP, located in the upper left-hand corner, is configured with the converted Audion skin “Reintegration.”

Software News: by Cletus™ It's a Scheme and Theme day once again

Malia Software has released the final version of Simple Browser 2.0. Simple Browser is a file browser along the lines of the new Mac OS X style. Comments from readers seem to indicate that it is very well done and they like it. Please let me know if you would like it added to the SW Archive.

Maury McCown has released AquaX 2.0.1 at RAILhead Design. This is a very well done Kaleidoscope Scheme. It quickly and quietly received a minor update, thus it is bumped to version 2.0.1 since it's release yesterday. One of the best out there in fact. Although I typically only run with the default Apple Platinum, I could live with Kaleidoscope using this scheme. Great job Maury!

Mac Things has posted two new Theme Previews. The first is by Webmaster of the site Marcos Lopez called "Grafit". The second is by Riverbed Software and is called "Pastel"

The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has updated with 13 new and 8 updated schemes. Some of my favorites from this batch are: DV PLatinum II, Circle Pusher, Silver Vines and Tenebrousia.

Westcode Software has updated it's One Click component System Bar 2.0.2. It is recommended that all OneClick 2.0 users update to this version. Nothing is mentioned on the page as to what has changed. The page states that the stand alone version of it's System Bar will be updated shortly.

A Japanese version of Drag Thing is now ready for prime time. James Thomson is also looking for Japanese sites to help mirror this the release. If you could help him out send him an email.

SETI@home — ah yes! Jeremy, our Snapshot guru has recommended that I add this to our SW Archive. He noticed that a lot of snapshot submittals have this running on their machines. When you look at it from the screensaver portion of the program, it does qualify as GUI I guess. It has been added -- thanks Jeremy!

Sixteen years ago this weekend, my lovely wife and I were married. What does this have to do with filing my taxes online? It seems we never sent a name-change form to the Social Security administration, so to them she is still known as Miss Mazolla!

All this means that my electronically filed 1040 was rejected, while the paper form had been accepted for the past fifteen years. After a little last minute scrambling, the check is in the mail. Honest.

I hope the 45% of you who electronically filed your forms had better luck.

Several years after its release, how many of the popular Sherlock features are still being used? This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you still index your drive?".

In case you missed it, iCab has been updated and jumped a whole version number to 2.0. It's fast and has the most comprehensive set of preferences I have ever seen in a browser. It will even let you design the contextual menus. As a webmaster™, my favorite new preference if to get rid of that damn frowning face.

It lacks full support for Javascript, so the popup menus at ResExcellence still won't work, but for those of you looking for another alternative until (and if) Netscape gets their act together, check out iCab.

If it's Monday, then Patrick Kelleher must have created a new throbber! This new iBook throbber can be downloaded from his Throbber page, which displays all his spinning creations.

A person know to Federal Marshalls as sysinfo has updated his patcher for the most recent AIM beta, number 966. sysinfo will also be monitoring the User's Forum from his cell in a maximum securtiy prison at an undisclosed state. Post your comments, and he will respond. Instant Messenger 3.5.966 patch…

This patch removes the AOL ads from the buddy window, and removes the AIM logo from the Sign-On windows. These are intended as an interim solution until AIM 4 comes out.

Regular contributor, Victor Yee, has set up a web page for all his Applescripts. He wrote a new script called CreatorMapper that changes creator types, but using a different method to define file types and creator types. This is the description:

This droplet changes the creator type of files. Which files and to which creator is up to you. Both parameters are determined by the name that you give to the droplet! (neat huh?)

The first four letters of the droplet's name define the file type it will process, while the last four letters define the creator type that it will set processed files to.

That means that you can modify its behaviour just by changing its name!

Don't know if the trick is all that new, but there it is. btw, the script processes nested folders too.

Public Access Software has released Sherlock Menu 3.1. Sherlock Menu will provide a system wide menu for you that gives instant access to the search tool Sherlock. It also includes a Control Strip Module. This version adds several features including: Support for user-added search channels in Sherlock 2, support for reconfiguring Sherlock while it is already running, enhanced support for the Multiple Users features of OS 9. Sherlock Menu was the first software to be compatible with KidSafe, part of Apple's iTools.

The increasingly poplar Forward Delete key function can now be assigned when using a USB keyboard. By using ShadowKeys, which is a small extension, "the Forward-Delete key code is generated when depressing the Clear/NumLock key. Additionally the End Key can be assigned when depressing the Shift+Home keys."

Speaking of Forward Delete, Fabrizio Oddone has updated his page for Forward Delete. The page speaks to the popularity of Forward Delete. In actuality he does not seem concerned.

For those of you who are gadget freaks I found this on Info-Mac. It is called Mac Uptime. It will display a small window to keep track of how long you have been running. It will also tell you when your last crash was. I have not had a chance to try it out to the fullest, but it seems to run ok. Let me know what you think.

Ben Mackin has released a PDF formatted "How to" guide for creating themes. He is looking for feed back on whether it is too technical or not. Give it a read and let him know.

After a nine and a half hour flight across the Atlantic, plus another 3 hour nonsmoking flight, we arrived in Hungary. In the Captain's welcome speech he said, "For safety reason, this is a nonsmoking flight...". The funny thing is that I have never heard a plain chrashing because smoking were allowed!

And now after my little story, here comes your usual news. As you can see, I'm prepared to continue my updates, so you can send your contributions, but again, please be gentle with the file size of the desktop pictures, my connection is not as fast during this time. Thanks!

Icon Archive: One new set!

Today's icon contribution is a pair of "Nicer Trash" replacements by Ovid!

Desktop Archive: Five new pictures!

Michael Addison's "Just Gray" is what it says, a gray DOCK, but your eyes will thank you! Jonathan Signo's "G4 Metal" picture is another gentle-on-the-eye DOCK! We also have a beautiful "Foggy" landscape for your desktop by Rob van Aarle! You have seen Hes Nikke's desktop in our Snapshot Archive, now you can have the desktop picture "Transparent Apple" showed in that snapshot!

Aldert Greydanus has looked around and thought that the lovely water tower in his home town may make a good looking desktop picture. So, he updated A-Graphics with this new picture and yes, it also looks great in our Desktop Archive!

Thanks to everyone! Enjoy. And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions!

Around the Pixel's new system replacement set is absolutely gorgeous! The shape follows Apple's recent curvy design concept, the colors follow the OS X colors, yet these icons are anything but mimics! They are charming and original 32 bit creations!

Icon Amazons have joined together again for a lovely Easter icon set assembled from the creations of the entire group!

Colheres has released a tiny cute icon set called "Animals 2"!

Silver Dragon updated with new "Fantasy Icons", and you can also have the icons in animated version too!

Houston we have a problem! Well we don't, but I suppose at least two people do. It seems that there are two versions of Forward Delete floating about in cyberspace. (Original and just released) I'll tell ya, it is feast or famine here. They both have the same icon to boot. In any case, I am sticking with the original that was release back in 1993 by Fabrizio Oddone. This is why the Software Archive has not been down dated from v1.1.4 to v1.0. I have written to both authors — if nothing else, it should get things stirred up. Fabrizio has replied and Peter Hoerster has not yet. Here is Fabrizio's response:

Forward DeleteI wasn't aware of the existence of this other Forward Delete. I released my Forward Delete for the first time in 1993, so I'm pretty sure I was there first. :-)

More to come on this I am sure. I will keep you posted should one or the other be "deleted" — boo, hiss!!!

The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has been updated with 7 new and 11 updated Schemes Satellite V and 1228 is funky and Silver Cat is cool.

Themes.org has released 5 new themes and several new screenshots to help take you into the weekend. For a more complete selection of screenshots check out this page.

Kineticon has been updated to version 1.7. The last time I checked, the web page wasn't updated to indicate this. Changes include Kineticon's bundled animation's having been revamped. They are now much nicer looking! Additionally there have been other minor bug fixes. Be sure to also stop by the New Kines page while there and stock up on some new icons. The SW Archive has been updated also. Download Link.

I'm going to be visiting my home country of Hungary for a little while. This means three things:

  • 1. I'm going to eat foods that I have only dreamt about these past three years - the last time when I was home!
  • 2. My Mom will spoil me to death, which I'm going to look forward to!
  • 3. I'll try to continue my updates from Hungary, so don't hold back news about your site updates, and keep sending your contributions, but please be gently with the file size!

Icon Archive: One new set!

I wouldn't dare to start my vacation without updating my site IliCon! So I did, and as a royal, I mean loyal staff of ResEx, I also contributed the new desktop pictures and their complementing small icon set for both of our Archives.

Desktop Archive: Three new pictures!

The simple and elegant DOCK "Redish" is the pair of the yesterday's posted "Bluey" from the Michael Addison's picture series! Also see my two desktop pictures in our Archive!

Thanks to everyone! Enjoy. And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions!

PixelPress has made medicine easy for little ones to take! This new icon set "Drug Store" even has characters.

TriBall software has updated their desktop picture collection with "Foggy". The site has a dozen desktops that look like the same vista, but at different times of the year or hour. It's as if you were looking out a window watching time pass. Worth a look.

What's new on your site? Icons? Desktop pictures? Inform us! We'll post it!

On my desk is a sixty year old black rotary phone made by the Western Electric company in nearby Cicero, Illinois. It's the best sounding phone I have ever owned. I keep a digital keypad nearby for times when I need to "Press one to speak with a company representative...".

After buying two new phones to replace rundown units in other rooms of the house, it occurred to me that the biggest casualty of the AT&T was the phone itself. No matter how much I spend, purchasing a corded phone that can last more than one year is a task that eludes me.

A ResEdit template to edit templates? That exactly what Michael Reeves has created. If you are a creator of resEdit templates, this will be of interest to you. From the READ ME:

A simple editor for use with ResEdit 2.1 or higher. To use it open the file "TMPL Editor" included with this document and copy all the resources into ResEdit or its preference file located in the "System Folder" under "Preferences". ResEdit should then be able to use to open any 'TMPL' resource. One note about the interface the last item in the type is included for compatibility with non-ResEdit TMPL's such as those built for Resorcerer™. All types recognized by ResEdit should be included in the popup. This editor is Freeware and may be freely distributed.

Software News: by Cletus™

Jérome Foucher has updated the popular Wapp Pro 2.6.2 to fix a pop up menu bug that was introduced with version 2.6.1. Wapp Pro will allow quick and easy window navigation via a menu that lists the windows of the frontmost applications. A wonderful time saving control panel.

A new beta version of Simple Browser, — and probably the last before a final version — has been released. Hands down, this file browser by Malia Software appears to be outdistancing Macintosh Explorer by Rage Software. In all fairness though, both are in beta and one is the initial version. I am leaning towards following both as they come out of beta before really getting into further comments by readers. Please continue to send me your reports and please let the authors also know of your testing results.

Stimp Soft Inc. has released version 1.1 of SnapperHead™ for PPC only. This application by AutoPurge and EmptyTempFolder author John M. Schilling, will send a screenshot to people who enter an IP address into the web browser. There is a test page for you to try out in order to give you an idea of what it is.

Peter McHugh ran into a bit of trouble the other day with his mouse pointer going crazy and acting jerky after doing some Spring cleaning on his equipment. He remembered previous discussions on the ResExcellence Forum concerning this problem and off he went to Focus Softworks to grab Focus Bus Tool™ to clear up his problem. I like little applications like this simply because they are useful. I plan on adding this to the archive for everyone over the next week or so.

Several Theme authors have contacted me about updates and releases and previews of upcoming themes etc. Michael Rabe of Doghouse Online Inc. perhaps summed it up best though when he said it has been a "busy day for Mac OS Themes." Here is a run down on the events of the day:

Mathew White aka "Mafoo" has completely revamped his site power/MAC. I like it! While he has not updated his themes for the new opening, he has posted two new previews of upcoming themes. These are called "LCD" and "Smooth" and can be viewed in the Themes Section off the main page. Actually there is a third tucked in his cupboard that I think he should be encouraged to complete called Bluetek. But hey! — that is my 2¢'s worth. :)

Ben Mackin has released Liquid Metal (the Graphite Variation). He is planning more variations on his Liquid theme and an update to the original Liquid within a week or so. Currently Liquid Metal has no icons included, however icons are planned for a future release. I will keep you posted.

The World of Mac Themes announces Riverbed Software's release of The GlassWorks Series today. 7 variations to choose from. A lot of work went into this series. You can certainly choose a color that is right for you!

Icon Archive: Two new sets!

Continuing Ryan Matrinez's iCab series, today we are posting the "iCab QuickTime" replacement icons!

After the "smiley" mania, here come the "Aliens" in power/Mac style! They invaded Mafoo's desktop, and I see they invaded his web site too, since it has been changed from the last time I've seen it. The new design looks great, so do the icons at power/Mac and his set in our Icon Archive!

Desktop Archive: Five new pictures!

Hey guys, after you put Fathom on your desktops, she will even be in your dreams. Don't thank me, thank to Strigmaga! "Bluey" is not as sexy, though the curves are right, it is a glassy blue apple in the middle of a simple and elegant DOCK from Michael Addison!

Rampant Mac is having a serious update attach! Today they released eleven new desktop pictures, from which Scott Chitwood sent us two for our Desktop Archive. Furthermore, they also released five new 3D desktops and one new StartupScreen! Wow! That's quantity and quality!

MAJArch Studios 2000 has extended with 8 new desktop architecture images! And we also received one from these beauties for our archive.

Thanks to everyone! Enjoy. And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions!

Sasquatchamo Lives! has new tiny icons for you, called "Thor"!

The Little Darkroom has also updated with two new pictures. One of them may be a little bit bright for a desktop picture but certainly a very interesting piece of a "Creation"!

The Head-Space has changed its look and provides lots of goodies, among them are desktop pictures. Take a look and enjoy!

What's new on your site? Icons? Desktop pictures? Inform us! We'll post it!

I wonder if there are any statistics to backup my belief that Mac users update their hardware more often than PC users. Everytime there is a hardware Polling Place question, it appears that Mac users have rapidly upgraded to the latest and greatest.

For example, last week's Poll showed that 44% have Firewire. That means a fairly new Blue and White G3, or Graphite G4, and doesn't even include all the new iMac owners. That seems impressive to me. If any one knows of any statistics, please send me a link.

I've procrastinated about as long as possible, but this week, I will finally sit down to do my taxes. As I have done for the past 5 years, I'll be using MacInTax from Intuit. Am I alone in my suffering? This week's Polling Place question asks, "Did you electronically prepare your taxes this year?".

After mentioning running Netscape 6 under LinuxPPC, several readers have asked where to get it. While you can't exactly get Netscape 6, there are nightly builds of Mozzila 14 at this ftp server, and another build at the South Pole.

Which reminds me, some LinuxPPC questions have been posted in the Forum, and while they are welcome there and you wish you luck, the best place to find help is by searching the LinuxPPC email list.

Now that we all have the official MacOS 9.0.4 update, the edit to shorten the 2 minute MountCheck delay has been updated to account for the PowerPC Enabler.

I had really thought that when the final version was released, that the enabler would be rolled into the System suitcase. It's interesting to note the increasing complexity of the System folder. We now have several fairly new files containing resources: MacOS ROM, System Resources, PowerPC Enabler 9.0.4, Login, and Panels.

PixelPress is generally thought of as an icon site, but stop by there to see their updated Applescript section.

Here are a couple of simple Applescripts to Hide All/Show All from Victor Yee. One way to trigger them is by assigning them to Function Keys in the Keyboard Control Panel, another is with OSA Menu.

APPL is the creator code for the Finder. You can easily modify the scripts to show/hide and application by changing the code.

Those of you who have been clamoring for patchers for betas of AOL's Instant Messengers will find some satisfaction. An anonymous coder submitted patchers for the two most recent betas that remove the AOL ads from the buddy window, and remove the AIM logo from the Sign-On window. These are intended as an interim solution until a final AIM comes out.

Macinstruct is one year old! Webmaster Matthew Cone has posted his gratitude for the past year, and his hope for the future. There is also a new tutorial with instructions on how to upload your web site.

User Contributed Splash Screen:

  • You can change the look of ICQ with this Graphite Makeover by Eduardo Macias.

  • Another steamy submission from Kevin Hessel. This time it's a Hotline splash screen.

  • Using bolder colors, Mark Saunders put together this splash screen for Explorer 5.

  • Blending the lighthouse, smilin' Mac, and a little Aqua, Brad Grosse created this Netscape splash.

  • Throbbers have certainly made a comeback! This new one by Bart Cable for Netscape features a graphite spinning Apple logo.

Snapshot Gallery

  • Joakim Uhrwing from the IconHood is back with another snapshot, this time featuring various icons from the Icon Factory and what appears to be a desktop picture with desert sand dunes. Very cool!

  • Hes Nikke provided us with an interesting before and after snapshot set. The top snapshot is Aquafied and clear of window and icon clutter. The bottom snapshot taken two months later, however, is a nightmare of overlapping windows positioned haphazardly and hoards of icons deposited on the desktop from a weeks worth of work. It’s enough to make an organization freak like myself just cringe!

  • Jack Shedd submitted this screenshot, a product of much color tweaking in ResEdit. It features the “Delicate Violence” desktop picture and a modified version of the Osmium 45 K-Scheme, sprinkled with various icons from the ExtraVirgin Pack and Photonica icon sets.

  • This submitter, who preferred to remain anonymous, sent in this snapshot featuring the DSG Theme and the “Return of the Mac Transparent” desktop picture with a custom gray pattern underneath.

  • Chris Buyak sent in this screenshot featuring a custom desktop picture he created called “LA” along with the ByCrom K-Scheme. The desktop picture appears to portray confusion and chaos.

  • Hnz Geeratz from Stuttgart, Germany submitted this snapshot featuring a modified Mac OS X desktop picture and various applications for working with his website.

Software News 4-10-00

Software News: by Cletus™ UPDATED 11:59 a.m.

Task Menu Bar was updated to version 1.1.3. This update provides more compatibility with the custom 32-bit icons under 8.5 and even more compatibility with Kaleidoscope Schemes and Mac OS Themes. SW Archive has been updated to reflect the new version.

Seems to be slow on the software front.

Bob Friede emailed me about a piece of software he finds very useful called Mouse Move. This program by Chris Cho will move your mouse at random time intervals when it is idle to help prevent you from timing out of certain situations and programs. In Bob's case, he uses it to prevent "an ISP from disconnecting and it works flawlessly for me in OS 9.04/Netscape 4.72." I have added Mouse Move to the Software Archive. Thanks Bob.

Appearance HopperMy favorite control panel, AppearanceHopper 1.9.1 from WeedHopper Press has been updated. Author Jeremiah Morris notes the changes as: Improved theme compliance and speed. He has removed the 10-trial restriction. English, French, Swedish, and Russian versions are available. Appearance Hopper will allow you to make changes that are not available under the Appearance Control Panel such as, "setting the font, size, and style of the System Fonts; accessing the "hidden" scroll bar options; set the style of alias names, and turn off the arrow badge on aliases; and modify the Application Switcher palette, all in one user-friendly control panel." This is one program I quickly registered and use all the time.

Last time I mentioned Simple Browser and over the weekend I found another file browser called Macintosh Explorer. This version appears to provide a lot more features and information. Macintosh Explorer and Simple Browser are both in beta, but please let me know how they work.

Michael Rabe left me know that the Y3K Theme has been updated to fix several bugs. It is available at the new and improved World of Mac Themes.

Lots of people are complaining about Netscape 6 in the newsgroups, including the ResExcellence User Forums, but I to be honest, I've been running it under MacOS and Linux almost exclusively with few problems.

Many readers complain of problems scrolling documents. To speed scrolling and give N6 the standard Platinum bars, select Preferences->debug, and uncheck the gfx scrollbars option.

While I admit this beta release is not perfect, there is a promise of great power in Netscape 6. If you dig around the folder hierarchy in Netscape 6, you'll get an appreciation for the modular construction of the program. Every aspect of the interface can be user defined, from the cosmetic to the operational.

Comparing Sullivan with the default Netscape User Interface.

Netscape 6 is based on XML, just as many MacOS X applications. By editing text files and creating gifs, you can rebuild the style of the toolbars, sidebar, and menus. To see an example, visit Alphanumerica and download the Sullivan skin. While it's a work in progress, notice how all the menus have been redefined. ChromeZone is also a good site for information on skins - and all this is platform agnostic. Skins work equally well under Windows, Linux, and MacOS, so the MacOS should never feel orphaned.

While many of you are frustrated with your initial impressions, remember a few things. Competition is good. It benefits the Mac community to report bugs to the developers in as much detail as possible. Netscape's beta cycles have always been open to the public, Microsoft's have not, so you can expect to hear more online complaining regarding Netscape.

Every aspect of Netscape is open to the public, from the user interface, to the raw source code. Microsoft's is not. In fact, I'm currently working with two ResExcellence readers to develop ResEdit templates for the complicated color styles used in Explorer 5. (Watch for more on IE5 colors next week...)

Power Management on Powerbooks.

Initially, one of the services I missed most with Linux on my Powerbook was the ability to sleep. Here is how to add a high degree of power management with sleep. (Continued...)

Ironically, the Stuffit format that began on the Mac Platform, has been ported to Linux on Intel, but not Linux on the PowerPC platform. If you would like to see Expander under LinuxPPC, drop a polite note to Customer Service.

Snapshot Gallery

  • Nick Ditmore submitted this screenshot featuring one of Digital Blasphemy’s “Jellies” DPs along with Audion configured with the Boomerang skin. A whole smorgasbord of icons abides on the right edge of the screen.

  • Curt Menn submitted this screenshot featuring a desktop picture from Rampant Mac and an Aqua K-Scheme.

  • Matt Thompson sent in this snapshot sporting the “Walnut Lake” desktop picture and Fuse K-Scheme. Audion is playing a song he created on his iMac.

Software News: by Cletus™

Jérome Foucher has updated Desktray to version 1.4.1. Fixes include: DeskTray

• DeskTray was unable to resolve multiple aliases (alias of an alias....of a folder) put in DeskTray Items folder.

• On systems older than Mac OS 9, you may encounter the System Alert "Too many files opened".

• Raised the maximum number of items that can be displayed in DT to 600. When this number is reached, an alert appears that asks you to choose another folder.

• Removed the option to collapse the drawer when double-clicking in an unused part, as too many bugs have been reported when using this option. It should reappear when and if I manage to find a solution to the bug.

As several positive reports have come in about DeskTray, I have decided to add it to the S.W. Archive.

Magic Power Menu 2.1 has been released by Gadget Software. Changes to this version include: "A redesigned control panel, better stability and now works more naturally. A crash with QuarkXPress has been fixed. You can now double-click on extensions to have info about them and the Demo version now is less limited."

Speaking of Gadget Software and their software Faster! — They are asking for your opinion on it. (scroll down the page) MacFixIt has also been following this product pretty intensely and seems to have received the same mixed reaction I did to it. Gadget is offering a refund if you are not satisfied with Faster!:

"....if you thought that Faster! would REALLY accelerate your computer 3 times, or if you are not satisfied about it, we can refund it: you just need to tell us what computer do you have and why you aren't satisfied."

Bob Friede drop me a note on a new shareware product he is using from Nexsus Innovations called FontShowcase. (click the software tab) I have not had a chance to really look at this but it seems interesting. It is an application used to view fonts. "You can change the font, style, color and size to see just what the font likes like when used."

Has anyone checked out Simple Browser by Malia Software yet? It seems similar to Greg's Browser and provides a NeXT style way of browsing your hard drive. It is still in beta testing but will give you an idea I suppose, of the way you will be able to navigate your computer in Mac OS X. Give me the word on this please.

Themes.org has posted several new screenshots of their latest desktop submissions. Check them out!

Peter Harte needed to update his two Aqua Schemes after a nasty bug was discovered in the schemes: when dragging a file all the way to the bottom of a popup window it keeps popping up and down. He fixed the bug and also updated his site.

Quote of the week: "where do you hide a book?" — "In the bookcase".

Icon Archive: Two new sets!

Yea! Puppies are everywhere! They get your CDs, they sit on your Hard disks, peeping from behind, or watching over your folders. Ruth Ginzberg's little rascals will do all these things the moment you let them loose in your Mac!

One of my favorite places to look for oh-so darling cute icons is Marcsbitzoo! Today there is a new little set from Marc Oliver and I don't have to tell you how cute the "Iconimals" are. Very, very, very... cute. I would love to hug and pet them and make them my little friends! Of course, I had to have them in our Icon Archive too, so here they are!

Desktop Archive: Three new pictures!

Gerald Lim sent us "EVA". Ah, it's not someone you can spend the night with, - you guys(!) but it's a beautifully drawn picture in deed! Then there is one from Peter McHugh who surprises us with another gorgeous close-up, "Mannifera"!

Macalodeon is not only a good looking web site, it also holds great looking desktop pictures as well! The creator, Michael Addison, sent us a whole bunch of them and we'll happy to serve them to you one by one. The first one is called "Mac Block". You'll come back for more!

And we still have the April Calendar from Melissa J. Stone but not for long, so download it now while you still can use it!

Thanks to everyone! Enjoy. And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions!

Colheres released two new sets, the fresh, happy and very charming "Family" and "Link" icons!

Marmalade Moon switched to spring mode and released her first 32 bit experimental icons "Daffodils". Looking at the icons, we can easily say, it was a successful experiment!

Green Rabbit is a new site with cute animal icons. Another set, "Magic" is filled with Unicorns, Dragons, Crystal Balls, and a Spell Book. All the things you need to do some hocus-pocus, abracadabra! Green Rabbit also announced an icon contest in different categories. If you think you want to give it a try, jump over to see the details.

Icon Town has new citizens, new houses, and a chat place. Yes, yes it's a real chat room, not a "chat house" icon, which means, you can exchange pixel gossip with your neighbors in real time! Chat hour is between 7 and 8 PM in general European time, so it's around 1-2 PM ET in the US.

Creative Box updated with "Corporate Grape", A picture named "VineWhipped" is the desktop picture of the week at MacOSZone!

So, this was another fantastically great week. Be good, have fun, and come back next week. Until then, have a wonderful weekend!

Don't forget to read our interview with Layne Karkruff from Blue Sky Heart Graphics!

So this is voter apathy! Over half of you don't care that Apple turned the folder icon in MacOS X. And what's worse, only a quarter of you agree with me that it's a bad idea.

This week's Polling Place question was going to ask if you liked the new look of the site, but to be honest, I don't care if you like it! There's no way I'm going to redo over 500 pages of html again! So you better get use to the layout because it's going to be around for a long time! Not all the pages have been changed yet, and I imagine you'll stumble across some mixed up hybrids, but give us a week to sort it all out. This new look was the idea of ResEx regular Joe Daniels who sent a mockup as part of a Snapshot submission. I liked it so much I asked if he would mind if we made it a reality! Watch for his Snapshot Wednesday.

This week's new Polling Place question asks, "Does your main machine have Firewire?"

Judging from my email, it seems I tricked a fair number of you with the April Fool's Day posting. Many angry letters arrived threatening bodily harm if I didn't remove the one million dollar billing on their credit card. The funniest e-mail was from Jean-Jacques Cortes, who didn't have a Susan B. Anthony dollar, but sent this one special dollar he did have...

If you think I received a lot of hate mail this April 1st, you should see the page I posted last year!

So many readers emailed Jason Showers to ask how he created his NeXT Snapshot, he put together a web page detailing the experience.

Kalleboo has in interesting web page with lots of ResEdit related downloads. the most recent is a Remote Access makeover.

If you were one of the people who accidentally received the MacOS 9.0.4 update via the automatic Software Update Engine, Peter McHugh reports that in order to change the 2 minute Mount Check delay, you need to modify the Boot resource in "PowerPC Enabler 9.0.4". It will be in the System Folder.

User Contributed Splash Screen:

  • Patrick Kelleher sent another of his great throbbers. This one features a spinning iMac and is available for all the major browsers.

  • And also for your iMac, Kuzey Atici created this nice looking MOSS replacement.

  • Andrew White sent out first splashscreen replacement for Apple's DVD player.

  • This Word 98 splash should match the Paper Theme quite nicely. It too was made by Andrew White!

Wapp Pro 2.6.1 has been released to fix "for real, some problems that should have been solved by v2.6." I missed this email for the earlier post.

Hey I still have a job, Whoosh! Thank you very much!

Riverbed Software's Candy Theme v 1.5 will be available today from The World of Mac Themes according to Michael Rabe.

If things go as planned Maury McCowan from RAILhead Design plans on releasing PreviewMaker 2.4 today. While you're waiting you may want to check out his tutorial on making "Aquized" buttons. The tutorial link is listed on the main page here.

Jinsan has updated his NeXT and NeXT Capriccio Kaleidoscope Schemes as posted on JSA over the weekend. Although the update date on the page still lists as older, the download is the newer schemes.

Peter Harte from Ressentiment has updated his version of Aqua I & II Kaleidoscope Schemes. These are very well done schemes so stop over and check them out. Remember to have Java on when you visit this site.

Hungry for GUI customization on your Palm Pilot?? Or is this a April Fools Joke?? Check out Palm Themes.org. While this particular site and idea is still developing, they have posted a few theme image ideas to help make your Palm a little more your own. They claim compatibility on this secret project with other PalmOS-based PDAs such as Handspring. The several images posted give you an idea on the look of some of the themes. The one looks really cool on a PalmVc. (c stands for color screen). Will this concept turn into a real possibility. PS: just read and enjoy — I know :)

Ok, ok — the image on the icon for OpColourLight is a tube of paint. In particular D. Lawson feels it is a tube of "Gouache" And what is Gouache you might ask!? Well According to MacDict it is: "Gouache \Gouache\, n. [F., It. guazzo.] A method of painting with opaque colors, which have been ground in water and mingled with a preparation of gum; also, a picture thus painted." Thanks everyone for your ideas. By the way — Toothpaste was a very close second!!
