Currently, MacOS X displays the 5 most recent applications and documents under the Apple Menu. How would you like to increase that number? Thanks to a tip from Ammon Skidmore, you can! Ammon is the author of the popular program "Extension Strip", a full featured replacement for Apple's Control Strip. This simple modification involves editing the com.apple.recentitems.plist file with a text editor. The file is located in your home directory: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist. Make a copy of this file and open it in a TextEdit.
Initially, there will be a list of your 5 most recent apps and documents. By adding more entries, you can permanently increase the number of items remembered. Personally, I saw no value in increasing the documents, so I left that at 5, but the applications I increased to 14. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
Once you have your plist file edited with the desired number of entries, drag it back into the Preferences folder and overwrite the existing one. To see the results of your handy work, log back in and start launching applications! One by one, the more recent files will push the original ones off the list, but you will always have the increased number of items.
