Add Highlight Colors in MacOS X

Under MacOS X, in the General Controls panel, you can select the selected highlight color for text.

Apple provides seven colors for your use, but this simple edit provided by Jeff Frey will show you how to add as many additional colors as you wish. The edit listed below is performed while booted into MacOS to avoid permission problems with MacOS X.

The file containing the color settings is located in the folder shown on the left.

Please be sure to make a copy of the original and store it in a safe place.

It's a text document in Unix format, go I recommend opening it in Tex-Edit Plus or BBEdit convert it to Mac Classic format.

The format of the text file is as follows: Name for menu, and the three RGB color values.

Don't forget to add commas after all but the last entry.

You can get the RGB color values from Apple's Color picker.

In this example: 27, 27, 53, you would enter: 0.27, 0.27, 0.53.

Once you have added your colors, be sure to convert back to Unix text format.

Save the text file and boot into MacOS X to see the results.
