| Update Netscape to have Platinum menus.
The first thing you may notice after launching Netscape Communicator is that the menus are a boring, flat white. While it is disappointing the the programmers didn't use this opportunity to update the menu definition (MDEF). You can do it yourself.
- Download this 15k resource file from the Mercutio MDEF web site and open it in ResEdit.
Local copy at ResExcellence.
- Open a copy of Netscape Communicator 4.6 in ResEdit.
- Select all the resources from the Mercutio MDEF (Command-A)
- Paste them into Netscape (Command-V)!
- Select Yes to the dialog to replace the same ID numbers
- Save your work and quit ResEdit. The new version of Netscape is ready to use, and the Menus will now have the Apple Platinum appearance.
Use these Previous Edits to further modify Netscape 4.6
Cletus Waldman explained how to have Netscape use Apple's faster Java Virtual Machine (MRJ 2.1.2). Visit the Mozilla.org website to read more, and download the MRJ Plugin. Place the Plugin and library files into Netscape's plugin folder. The next time you launch the browser, it will use Apple's Java Machine.
