Tiger: Modify the Log Out Window
by Scott Chitwood, 20th December 2005

This article is an update to our Jaguar/Panther: Modification Of Log Out And Shut Down Windows posted back in January of 2004.

The nib files have undergone significant changes since that time and the shut down dialogue has more than likely been coded into the loginwindow executable file. However, the mod does work for the revised Log Out window nib, the changes we can make are simple enough to accomplish, so fire up Interface Builder and dig in.

The LogOut.nib is what we're after, it is located in...

/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/

Use your admin priveleges to enable Read/Write priveleges on the English.lproj folder. And, per our usual rule, back up the original file by making a copy or archiving it in place.

Once the LogOut.nib is open make whatever minor changes you'd like. Static text, button text, window styles, button shapes and more are all editable from within the Inspector window.
