Change The Splash Screen In Microsoft 2004 Apps
by Scott Chitwood : 11-04-2004

Changing the splash screens in applications for Mac OS X is generally just a matter of control clicking the app, selecting the contextual menu "Show Package Contents" option and locating the proper image within the app Resources folder. That, however, doesn't hold true for Microsoft Office 2004. The splash screen images aren't located in the Office support files; looking at Office apps using the Terminal command "ls" shows that the apps aren't directories.

So where are the MS Office splash screens located and how do we get to them? The image resources are buried in the apps themselves, you'll need a resource editor to access the apps. For the purpose of this mod we'll fire up the Classic environment and launch ResEdit. If you prefer to work in OS X or don't have Classic installed on your Mac you can use one of these native OS X apps; ResFool, ResKnife or Resourcer.

Make a copy of the app you'll be modifying and rename it. The original should be moved to a safe location for use as backup/restore or it can be archived in place.

Open your copy of the app in ResEdit, double-click on the PICT resources, locate appropriate PICT, # 1995 for Microsoft Word. It's always a good idea to do a Resource > Get Resource Info command; notice that Purgeable is checked under Attributes area, our new splash screen will need to be the same.

Now copy and paste the splash screen image into a new document using Photoshop, Graphic Converter or other image editing app. Once you are done creating a new image save it as a PICT Resource with the proper I.D.

Open your new splash screen resource in ResEdit, make sure the Purgeable Attribute is checked and save the altered file. The final step is to copy and paste your new splash resource into the PICT resources of MS Word, be sure to answer Yes in the dialog pictured below.

Launch your modified app and view your cool new splash screen!
