Extract-icns: The Icon Utility You May Not Know About Extract-icns is a small little app by ExitToShell() Software that will extract a custom icon from a file or folder. Extract-icns is free to use and operates via drag and drop. Generated folder icons get placed inside the folder and file icons get placed in the same folder as the file, or within the top level of the app's package contents. DragThing Teaser Pics James Thomson's very cool utility DragThing is ramping up for an update with some great new features, see if you can them in his teaser pics. Ram Disk Creator 1.0 Beta Donelesschi Software's Ram Disk Creator is a tool used to create Ram Disks, a feature was available in Mac OS 9 and below, but since Apple released Mac OS X this capability disappeared from our Macs. Ram Disk Creator brings them back! You can access files on a RAM disk as you would access files on a real disk. RAM disks, however, are approximately a thousand times faster than hard disk drives. They are particularly useful, therefore, for applications that require frequent disk accesses. Using a Ram Disk instead of the hard disk with Powerbooks and iBooks requires less power consumption, which has the possibility to dramatically increase battery life of portable Macs. More information can be found on the Ram Disk Creator homepage. Panic & The Iconfactory Release Pixadex 1.5.1 Panic and The Iconfactory have updated the popular icon storage and organization software for Mac OS X, Pixadex, to version 1.5.1. Tools of the Trade by Scott Chitwood I wanted to get much more into this report but wound up fighting my Terminal for well over an hour after somehow botching it up so it would only use "dumb terminal" mode. Tossing the prefs fixed it but I spun my wheels way too long before doing the simple thing. Doh! Mods For Mac OS Classic While we haven't featured any new mods/hacks for Mac OS Classic in recent memory we do understand that there are many of you out there who haven't upgraded your computer or operating system to allow you to experience Mac OS X. I'd like to invite anyone who has designed a new mod, or updated an exisitng hack, for Mac OS Classic to share it with us so we can in turn share it with other users. Just package it up, along with uncompressed screenshots, as you would any other submission and we'll add it the archive. How To Install Sodipodi Under X11 Using Fink by Mark Evans I was attempting to install Sodipodi under X11 using Fink for a long time but kept getting errors, here's how I got it to finally work. Open the FinkCommander Preferences and select "Use unstable packages". Then when you start to compile Sodipodi it will give an error such as... > ld: warning prebinding disabled because dependent library: > /usr/lib/system/libmathCommon.A.dylib can't be searched > make[2]: *** [test1] Error 1 > make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 > make: *** [all] Error 2 > ### execution of make failed, exit code 2 > Failed: compiling popt-1.7-1 failed To fix this type sudo ranlib /sw/lib/libintl.a in a Terminal window, then compile the package again using either FinkCommander or the Terminal. Command --> Fink Install Sodipodi <-- Command When done (Should only take about 5 - 7 minutes) open X11 and type /sw/bin/sodipodi or put source /sw/bin/init.sh; sodipodi in the customizable applications menu. Hit preview to view large image I hope this helps your readers. Also sodipodi is a great open source vector graphics illustration alternative. Combined with Gimp you can do some great stuff for FREE! Tools of the Trade by Scott Chitwood And the Winners Are... Two new projects have arisen as a direct result of these interactions. They are the BetaGroup project and the MacDevListing project. Project: BetaGroup is an attempt to bring together, depending upon interest in the project, developers who are seeking beta testers. Project: MacDevListing is an attempt to create a new Macintosh Developer Listing; dynamic in nature and encouraging open communication between users and developers. Both projects are aimed at individual developers or small companies.A poll covering the MacDevListing project is available from March 18, 2004 More information can be found on the ThinkTank homepage. Polling Place by Scott Chitwood The question was; Do you use Sherlock? Okay, I'll acknowledge that there should have been an option in the poll for those of you who use Watson over Sherlock. The only thing I can say in my defense is that I was thinking about the question from the angle of an Apple software product that just doesn't seem to get launched very often, or is completely ignored by some users. I've found that my appetite for collecting fonts far exceeds the amount I'll ever wind up using but having a variety of typefaces at my fingertips is a wonderful thing. Managing them is another story. In OS 9 I used Font Reserve to organize my fonts. I haven't upgraded to a Mac OS X compatible version just yet and am still not sure if I should. For my home use, Panther's FontBook app has been fairly dependable, I'm just not sure how well it would perform in a real production environment. The question is; Do you use a font management app? Do you have an idea for poll question that you'd like to see us ask? Send it my way!
