I'm on a tight budget but I've been saving my small change and soon will have maybe $100. I want to treat myself and do something nice for my Mac.
I have an emac with a Power PC G4 processor and 128MB RAM and run 10.1.5
I don't really do anything fancy, mostly surf the web and use iTunes. I'm pretty happy with Camino as a browser and am not really interested in an iPod. I just use iTunes in importing and burning AIFF that I process using Amadeus ll. I'm not really interested in themes either so I have no real need for something like Shapeshifter. I have Candybar, Tinkertool, and Transparent dock which pretty much take of my GUI requirements.(and iconographer if I need it) If I could get rid of the finder icon in the dock I'd be happy as a clam, but I'm used to it by now.

So here's the question: should I spend my money
1) upgrading my OS to 10.4 when it comes out
or
2) buying more RAM

The only other consideration is I'm hoping if I plead enough I may be able to get Mathematica for Christmas

The single best thing you can do for any machine is to put more RAM into it.

512mb will speed up ur machine tons
Get a copy of 10.2 or 10.3 off ebay if u still have the change
Otherwise if u can set up a swap partition in 10.1.x u should do it - it makes a huge difference cf later versions of OSX

I have an iMac 500mhz G3 and I was running 10.2.8 quite nicely with 128 meg. Yes, it was slow and my HD would give me looks as if to say "What the hell!?!?" But it did work.

I bought 256 more and am now running 10.3.2. The main thing you'll notice is how quiet your HD has gotten. It's almost unnervingly quiet the first week or so.
