Modify the Toolbar in the System Preferences by Michael Coyle

Peter Maurer sent this cool tip to modify the toolbar in the System Preferences application by editing the preferneces text file. Before changing anything, make a copy of the following file as a backup:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Double-clicking the file opens the "PropertyList Editor". If you would like only icons in the Toolbar without a text name below, change TB Display Mode to 2.

To add more dividers between icons (the default is 1), open the TB Item Identifiers, select the item that you wish to have the divider inserted after and click New Sibling. From item 1, copy NSToolbarSeparatorItem and paste it into the text box of the new sibling (item 7 in my example).

You can even adjust the size of the icons in the toolbar (with mixed results). Change TB Size Mode to 2 for slightly smaller icons. Now save the file and launch System Preferences to see your handy work. The results of my options are shown below.
