Disable Beep When Changing Volume in MacOS X

Updated for MacOS X 10.1.5

This helpful tip from Ammon Skidmore will save me plenty of embarrassment on the train. The problem arises when I leave my sound level set on the maximum. As I sit on the quiet train for the ride home, eventually the Powerbook speakers squawk with an error. My fellow passengers must suffer though a series of beeps as I use the keyboard volume buttons to lower the volume to a manageable level. This little modification removes the audible feedback as you change the volume.

We're going to make a small modification to a file called BezelServices. Open a terminal and type the following:

Switch to the BezelServices directory
cd /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/Contents/MacOS/

Copy BezelServices to your Home directory:
cp BezelServices ~/Desktop/

Backup the original file:
sudo mv BezelServices BezelServices.orig

Keep the terminal open. We will come back to it in a moment.

At this point, in your Home folder is BezelServices. Download the MacOS X version of H exEdit and open the local copy of BezelServices. As shown below, search for the hex number: 480077ED. There is only one occurrence in the file.

Change 480077ED to 60000000 (That's six with seven zeros after it.).

Save the file and quit HexEdit. Switch to the open terminal window and we will copy the modified version back to the appropriate directory.

cd /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/Contents/MacOS/
sudo mv ~/Desktop/BezelServices .
<-- Don't forget period

Log out and back it to hear the results, um, or is that NOT hear the results!
