Change the Finder Buttons in MacOS X

In the new Finder windows, there is a shortcut button bar with six icons. This edit allows you to change those icons! In case you haven't seen it yet, read the previous edit How to Change the New Icons in MacOS X. It will get you familiar with the tools and technique needed.

All but one of the icons is stored in the folder shown below. The one exception is "Favorites". While this icon resides in the HIToolbox.rscr file, simply adding an appropriate replacement in the Resources folder will override the default behavior.

As replacements, I used some of the great eworld icons from IconFactory. When you download this set, the icons are pasted into folders. Doing this creates an invisible file called icon inside the folder. Using ResEdit's Get Info feature, make this file visible.

Open this new icon file in Iconographer and resave it with the correct replacement name and a format of MacOS Universal. Place it in the correct folder shown above and you're all set. Repeat for all the button icons you wish to replace.

Be sure to always work on a copy of the original files!
