Align Icons by Softwarium is a Contextual Menu Plug-in that will allow you to clean up and "align" icons in a window. If your a real neat freak then this is a must have tool.

Enters new icon information into the desktop database without having to rebuild the entire desktop.


BundleFix 65K Freeware

Bundle Fix by Anthony D. Saxton was originally a bit of a private piece of software distributed by a member of VMUG. It servers a trememdously useful purpose by adjusting the Bundle Bits. Anthony writes: "This program corrects the bundle bit on any file dragged to it. If the BNDL resource is present, the bit is set. Otherwise, it's reset. I think it will get much better distribution through ResExcellence, so I'm giving it to you." Thanks!


Clip2cicn 73K Shareware

This little tool will allow you to insert custom colors into the file of your choice. This, as opposed to using the system palette and dithering the resulting image. As the page states, this would be most useful when creating Kaleidoscope schemes, which uses the cicns resource for most of its interface elements.

Discolour 41K Freeware

Discolour by Ambrosia Software is a small extension that will allow floppy disks to display full color icons instead of the boring black and white icons when the disk is inserted. There is also a CD Discolour that can be used along with the floppy version. Despite the fact that it has not been updated since 1996, reports indicate no problems with it and Mac OS 8.6. In fact, check out this edit dealing with Zip/Jazz Icons!! This is really cool! (would you expect less from us?!)


Discolour for Zip 10K Freeware

Discolour for Zip was contributed by Bob Friede and is a modified version of Discolour listed above. This will provide you with a colored Zip Icon on the desktop.

Dumpster is a really cool program that simplifies some of the editing that we show at ResExcellence. Oh No!!! It will quickly and easily allow you to replace folder and Trash can icons to name a few. There are literally hundreds of icons included to choose from. This recent update adds compatibility with Mac OS 9.0 and fixes some bugs!

Export Icon by Kinetic Creations Inc. is an Adobe Photshop® plug-in which exports a photoshop image directly to a MacOS custom icon. From the homepage: "The Export Icon Plug-in works with "Large" 32x32 pixel, "Huge" (48x48 pixel) and "Thumbnail" (128x128 pixel) icons for use with MacOS X. The plug-in creates the custom icon's icl8 and icl4 resources from the RGB image (with optional dithering) for Classic Mac OS. This is a personal favorite of mine. If you wish to change an icon on the fly then this is the way to do it. Simply control-click on the desired icon and select copy from the contextual menu. Now control-click the icon to be replaced and select paste. Quick simple and easy. There is also a Creator's Special version of this software with added abilities available. (v2.1)

IconDropper by Iconfactory gives you the ability to change icons quickly and easily. You can either drop the icon to be changed onto the application or use the contextual plug-in. What is even nicer is that you are then carried to window where you can browse your choices of replacement icons. The new versions add Mac OS 9 compatibility and support for our next software release - iControl!

iControl by Iconfactory is a super icon replacement tool that works on its own or in conjunction with Icondropper. You can use specially developed sets to change any icon on your computer. Sets can be saved and given to friends or uploaded for other to download and use.


Icon Extractor 16K

Icon Extractor by David Veldhuizen is a slightly older application that does not have a 'read me' in it. It will allow you to drag and drop an application on it and extract all its finder icons as individual ResEdit files. These are gathered up and placed neatly into a new folder within the existing folder. Very nicely done.


IconMacher 990K Freeware

This application by Purple E Software will allow you to create a picture made up of numerous icons in the Finder or in Finder windows. Graphic formats supported are PICT, JPEG, GIF, and TIFF, along with graphic effects. 32 bit icons are fully supported. (Direct download)



Icon Machine 885K Shareware

An icon editor- it lets you customize the icons of items in the Finder. To edit the icon of an item, just drag it onto the Icon Machine icon in the Finder, and Icon Machine will open a window in which you can edit the icon. When you're done, use the Save command to apply your new icon. Carbonized.

Iconographer by MscapeSoftware is a fully-featured 32-bit and Mac OS X compatible icon editor. From the Read Me: It allows you to both change the icons of items, as well as edit the icon resources used by various programs. Iconographer has been created from the ground up to edit the new, Mac OS 8.5+, 32-bit icons with 8-bit masks. In addition, it allows you to work with icons from other platforms (at this moment, Windows .ico files and Mac OS X Server .tiff files). At the same time, it works on any Power Macintosh that has the Appearance Manager installed.

Just take a look at the icon to the left. In fact virtually all of the GIF files used in this archive were generated using this fabulous drag and drop utility. What could be simplier then to drag the folder/application that contains the desired image onto this app. and have a script kick in and make a Gif file then shut back down. Trust me on this one--ya gotta have it!


Icon Tools CMM 387K Shareware

Icon Tools is a great tool for making custom icon folders on the fly. It is jointly developed and distributed by Alessandro Levi Montalcini and Riccisoft. Using contextual menu technology you can apply "stamps" to existing folders and completely customise them with letters, numbers or graphics to make them more representative to what kind of folder it is. You have total control of the way the stamps look and are applied. Many stamps come with the package and many more are available here or you can make your own! Works with Mac OS 8.6.


iMacolor 128K Freeware

This is a simple control panel to use and the results are really pretty cool, I think. Developed by Pixture Studio, it will allow you to change the Apple color in your menu bar to one of the iMac colors. In addition you can easily change the Trash can to another color and design. Kineticon 1.3mb (Compatible with Mac OS 9.x) Shareware

This is a really neat little extension from Kinetic Creations that will allow you to replace selected icons on your desktop with animated ones. There are many pre-made animated icons to choose from here. Additionally you can make your own with the included Kineticon Editor. You need to be using System Software version 7.5 or higher.


Nuke Icon Menu 8K Freeware

This small extension removes the Bookmark and Window icons from Netscape's Communicator and Navigator.


RAM Disk Iconer 25K Freeware Compatible with Mac OS 9.x

RAM Disk Iconer by Patrick Stadelmann is a control panel/system extension that allows you to customize the name and the icon of your RAM Disk. The control panel allows you to choose the name and to activate or deactivate any of the options. The system extension code gets executed at startup. If these options are checked, it will rename the RAM Disk and/or create the custom icon file.


res2icon 140K Freeware (Compatible with Mac OS 8.0 or newer)

res2icon by Pixture Studio is a small and handy utility program for icon artists who uses ResEdit to make icons. It converts ResEdit files (with icon resources) into icon sets with easy drag and drop operation. It reads all valid icon resources from the ResEdit file and create a folder that contains multiple custom folder icons in it.
