Today's News by CletusBuh Bye!

Today is a big day in many ways at ResExcellence. First, it will probably be my last day at ResExcellence, as I am set adrift from the island. Thanks to all who recommended solutions such as a dinghy and SCUBA lessons. I still believe there is hope, if I can rally the troupes to vote someone else off.

Second is that the ResExcellence Theme is ready for prime time. All of us at ResExcellence offer our heart felt thanks to Michael Rabe from DogHouse Online for providing this theme for our readers and the Mac community. I wonder how many other sites can boast their own theme! Thanks again Michael.

Vizspring Software has updated two software items all of you seem to love. Throbber Edit and Throbber Developer. Throbber Edit will allow you to change the spinning "e" in Internet Explorer or "N" in Netscape to something else sans the need for ResEdit. Throbber Developer on the other hand will allow you to create a throbber for use in the two browsers.

Opera Software has announced that it will be releasing the final versions of its browsers to the Mac and Linux community for free. In a move similar to the Eudora e-mail client, users will have two choices.

"Opera for Linux and Macintosh will offer two options for keeping the browser. The user has the choice to download a free, ad-supported version with all features and functionality enabled, or registering the browser at a charge of $39 that removes the ads, with various discounts applying."

Jeff Rosen has posted AIMM 1.4. This is primarily a bug fix for this AIM striped down clone. Below is a partial list of the fixes and enhancements:

  • Fixed the duplicate buddy warning bug introduced in version 1.3. I also made it so that the buddy list behaves a little more like AIM's.

  • Fixed a lot of interface issues. Some windows were resizeable when they shouldn't have been.

  • Fixed a problem where AIM would send chat IDs that were to big for an integer variable. This made it impossible to send text in chat rooms sometimes.

  • Added an option in the preferences to make the text of those people who leave caps lock on lowercase. < now who ever does that?! :) >

  • Added an 'auto reconnect' feature. Since AIMM connects so fast, if you are bumped offline for any reason, it is hardly noticeable.

CharView 1.0b5 is an application that will show you all the available characters of a selected font. This is much easier to use then remembering all the keyboard shortcuts to generate the characters. Get in on the beta testing of this product and provide your input.

Rage Software has posted a new piece of software called Invisible Finder 1.0, Invisible Finder is a tool for managing your invisible files. It will allow you to browse your hard drives and find invisible files. Please be careful when working with invisible files. They are invisible for a reason and you should take care when deleting any invisible files.

element K Journals have posted an interesting article dealing with colors used on the web. It is part of their ongoing series called Inside Web Design. The article by Ron Wilder is entitled: "Understanding the Subtleties of Color"

The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has posted 2 new and 2 updated schemes. Metamorphosis is by Martha Royer and uses dark green and brown colors. The other is I/OS X Titanium LE (3 Week LTD Edition!), I guess that is the whole name. This theme is by Toren Valimir and ranks right up there with his other works. Gotta have it!

The Tribal Council has spoken.

After failing the Immunity Challenge, running Netscape 6 and Word 6 simultaneously, Cletus was voted off Gilligan's Island and into the shark infested water. Stop by on Monday and vote for the next editor you want to send packing!

In a recent email from Dan Bailey at Fontosaurus Text, he mentions the True Type Resource as a great place to get free fonts. This is ironic because I was just there last weekend snagging PC True Type fonts for use under Linux. If you haven't used TrueType fonts in LinuxPPC, read this.

Fontosaurus Text has updated with four new fonts. Check out Ronnie Raygun, Bungholio Surprise (so named, because, like Pulp Fiction, it was written on a roll of toilet paper -- no kidding), and NuMatrix.

Today's News by CletusPlease don't kick me off the island!

Tad under the weather today. Glasses of O.J. and on with the update.

A-Dock 2.3 public beta 2 was released yesterday. This version provides many bug fixes. Additionally, this release can also be run on your machine even if Wapp pro is not installed.

I have added a new piece of software to the Mac OS X Archive. TinkerTool 1.1 will allow modifications to the Mac OS X beta system all without the need of the command-line. The list of features is too long to post here. This version has the following enhancements:

  • Added new options to change not only the size, but also the type of system fonts.

  • Added new dock options for rumored features of future versions of Mac OS X.

MC Font Menu 1.2 is out. MC Font Menu is a Macintosh utility for displaying multiple column font menus.

  • WYSIWYG menu drawing is now cached.

  • Increased compatibility with certain programs such as WorldText and Key Caps 9.0.

  • The manual has been updated for version 1.2 and now includes a "Known Issues" section.

NiftyNeato Software has updated Snitch. Version 2.6.6 brings OS 9.1 compatibility to this popular shareware for viewing and manipulating file/folder attributes. NiftyNeato has set up a temporary page for downloading. In case this link changes on me, I have listed two of the download mirrors: NiftyNeato iDisk, or MacFixIt mirror.

Window Monkey will allow you to add a background pattern to your Finder windows. Window Monkey is now at public beta 3 and is believed to be fully compatible with Mac OS 9.1 and PopChar Pro.

Iconizer Pro has been updated to version 1.3.6. This program will allow you to create an image of 32bit icons for a folder background or CD background. A partial list of changes is listed below.

  • Added Show White Icons command to show icons which display absolute white color.

  • Added Trash White Icons command to trash icons which display absolute white color.

  • Moved all clean up commands to the “Clean” menu.

  • Improved icon naming methodology to speed up iconization.

February Virex virus definitions are out. Be sure to update. (Direct download— 2mb)

Themes and Schemes:

Updated cosmetics is how Peter Harte is describing the new release of AQUA II+, which is now at version 2.6.

John-G suggests that all users of AOL's Instant Messenger head over to AOL's Feedback page and light a fire under them to release a Carbon/Cocoa version for MacOS X!

MacInstruct has posted Part II of their MacPerl Interactive Tutorial. Even if you have never been interested in MacPerl, this is an interesting tutorial that will help get you familiar with Perl 5 under MacOS X.

In you have MacOS 9.1 and want to apply the edit to remove the 2 minute MountCheck delay, Richard Rice offers this revision to the original edit:

Not a comment so much as an update to the 'Remove the 2 minute delay from the startup disk check edit. I got it to work under MacOS 9.1. The 'boot' resource is now in the System Suitcase, and the hex '1C20' is located on line 00B2D8.

Monday I asked for a translation of this Japanese web site that had posted some skins and themes. Vaughan Woolley was able to help out:

These are hacks for postpet, Toast 4, iTunes plus 2 MacOS X Public Beta themes (Coaltar and Pomegranate) plus 2 wallpapers.

The iTunes patches make the buttons Reddish (Thiefjam R patch) or Blackish (Thiefjam B patch) plus the cyberthief mascot makes occasional appearances. In his instructions, he mentions the software used to alter resources is not used. I presume he means ResEdit. Sorry, but my Japanese is more in the realm of teaching and casual conversation, hacking in Japanese is a little out of my league. I hope this is of some use to you.

By the way, the author says that the iTunes hack is meant to work with the Japanese version of iTunes, so there might be some text problems if you try using it on an English version.

Modify SoundJam's Thumper Plug-in by Michael Coyle

Like XMMS (Linux) and WinAMP (Windows), SoundJam offers some great visual plug-ins for your enjoyment while listening to music, but why on Earth did they fill them full of odd little psychedelic cartoons!

MacZ Software has notified me of the winners of the FolderGuard Contest. Congratulations to Mark Evans and Carolyn E. Cooper. Both will receive a free registration for FolderGuard. For more information on the winners you can check this page. More contests on the way!

AIMM 1.3 has hit the web pipes. This slimmed down chat client is getting fine tuned with each release.

  • When a user signs on, their name stays bold for a lot longer.

  • Fixed a problem where a lot of idle time was taken up. Mainly, the iTunes
visualizer, for example, would lag with AIMM open.

  • Fixed a rare sound bug.

  • AIMM now remembers window placements much better.

Tim Dehring dropped us an e-mail about a new site called ApplePrograms. It is in the vein of VersionTracker, without the daily updates. He writes; “It is targeted for ‘newbies,’ but everyone is welcome...”

Wapp proWapp Pro 3.0b2 is now available. This window switching utility displays a menu in the menu bar allowing easy application/window manipulation. If you work with many windows or applications open, then this is the tool you need. Here is a listing from the email:

  • Removed the option to list the Desktop as a Finder window as it caused a big incompatibility with the Navigation Services when FinderPop was also installed.

  • Fixed various problems with the submenus of Finder windows.

  • Fixed problems with the menus added by the "Click-There-It-Is-like" feature.

  • There is a known incompatibility with Quickeys 5.

LCDtest is not really new, but is useful if you have an LCD screen. "LCDtest is a utility that simply helps you test your LCD screen for bad or stuck pixels. LCD's are very common with flat panel displays and powerbooks and unfortunately they are not flawless." The stuck pixel problem seems to be a common topic in news groups. This program will allow you to test your screen.

Melissa has updated the ResEx Links page with two dozen new sites! On the page is a form for you to add your site, or suggest another.

CyberGreg, a recent ResEx contributor, has some interesting items on his site. There are several downloads that allow iTunes to work with non-Apple CD Burners. Even if you're not interested in iTunes, there are some snapshots of Microsoft's next OS release: Whistler.

Since this site is in Japanese, it's difficult for me to be sure of what is there, but it looks like you can find a makeover for iTunes and some MacOS X Themes (modified Extras files). If anyone can send a translation, I'll post it.

The Polling Place by Michael

Ack! Over 90% of ResEx readers like the look of Titanium! Come on people! Where are the fruity colors? Where is the see-through plastic? Show me the "cute" factor! I read where all the Wintel laptop manufacturers are banding together to file a class action lawsuit against Apple for stealing the "look and feel" of their notebook computers. <rimshot>

Back to basics in this week's Polling Place where we ask the simple question, "Do you use Folder Actions?"

Polling Place Bonus. Survivor IV, (ResEx stranded on an Island).

Call me an opportunist, but...

The Staff of ResExcellence has been stranded on Gilligan's Island. Each week, readers can vote one of us off the island and into the shark infested waters. There is an additional Polling Place box on the left. Make your selection for this week and stop back Friday when we will have our Tribal Meeting to determine who becomes shark bait.

Will it be the group's newest member Melissa, or maybe you'll determine that old man Dan has outlived his usefulness. Will Cletus and Michael kill each other as they battle for immunity and the last bottle of Bass Ale? And what about Jeremy, the quiet one? What is that glistening piece of metal hidden under his pillow? Which one will be the Survivor...

Have a little Thai with your iTunes by Tan Vachiramon

When I first downloaded iTunes, I was slightly disappointed that it didn't support Thai ID3 Tags, while my Soundjam Free does (I've got the Thai Enabler in my System. Interestingly, the built-in player in MacOS X supports Thai tags without mods). So I decided to hack a little...

Before...

I opened a copy of iTunes in ResEdit and found the FOND resource. I then copied a Thai font from the System's Font folder and opened it in ResEdit, opened the FOND and changed the resource name to Lucida Grande. I copied that resource and pasted it into the iTunes' FOND resource (deleting the old Lucida Grande first) and saved that changes, and it worked! I guess this should work with all fonts.

One problem though, the letters of the ID3 tags are messed up, so an ASCII to Latin tag conversion did the job (I get some mp3s from Wintel computers).

After...

Well, that's it! Just thought it might be useful for people with unsupported foreign languages on their systems.
