Sunday 1-28-01 Update

The Contest for FolderGuard is now Officially over. Winners will be announced on Monday. Thanks for entering.

Gin~sing PreviewResExcellence readers have given Michael Rabe from DogHouse Online more names to choose from for his “Unnamed” theme then he ever expected. He was able to sort through them and picked a winner. The winner of a free registration for Theme Checker is Robert Stack. The name that he submitted is: "Gin~sing" Congratulations to Robert and best wishes to the theme with its new name!

One contest down and still one to go. Remember to enter our FolderGuard Giveaway, which is being sponsored by MacZ Software. Two registrations are up for grabs and there is still plenty of time to come up with a witty "why you want to win" story! On Monday I will announce the winners on ResExcellence for the entire world to see.

Ilona Melis from Ilicon gave me a heads up about a cool new icon program called "Icon-Splitter" by Florian Soenens. Icon-Splitter is a tool that allows developers and distributors of CD-Rom / DVD's to split images from a picture file into separate 32/32 bit pixel icons, with full 32 bit support. I think this would be a nice addition to the Icon Software Archive. What do you think?

Screen Catcher 2.2 by St. Clair Software has been released. This version has many new features and fixes. They are all listed below:

  • Screen Catcher now supports many more graphics file formats via QuickTime 4. These include TIFF, PNG, Photoshop, and BMP. QuickTime 4 must be installed in order to use these capabilities

  • Compatibility with Mac OS 9.1

  • Catch-All now works with Netscape 6 and Carbon applications

  • A conflict with Chronos Personal Organizer was fixed

  • A conflict with Thursby's DAVE file sharing client was fixed

  • Improved error handling in low memory situations

Tim was asking in our forums if there is a way to have more than one Control Strip. Oz recommended— and I back him on this 100%— to try Extension Strip by Ammon Skidmore. I have used this on every Mac I have owned. It is simply to flexible to ignore. You can orient it both horizontally or vertical, change its color, dynamically add/remove strips without restarting and yes— have more than one!

Themes and Schemes:

Now that the theme has been named, DogHouse is moving on with a record amount of releases today. Going out the door for Mac consumption is GlassWorks Strawberry 4.0, GlassWorks Snow 4.0, Theme Checker in 65k, Fat, and Carbon. In addition he is there is updating the preview for GlassBox. This should give you enough goodies to play with this weekend. I have added Theme Checker to the Mac OS X Software Archive.

Peter Harte has again updated his Aqua II+ Kaleidoscope Scheme. This time he adds to the cosmetic appearance of the “default push buttons.” There are also several bug fixes with this release. He also makes it known that he will not be pursuing a Graphite version of the scheme.

The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive is featuring four new and two updated schemes to choose from. All of them are pretty cool, so I will let you pick your favorites!

Daisuke has updated the FT-5 Kaleidoscope scheme, and it is available at Desktopper. This scheme is as none distracting as possible, using only shades of gray to form its windows.

Last time I mentioned the closing of IrieMac. Stonk wrote in to tell me it is still available from the Mac Themes Project Website.

Run iTunes under MacOS 8.6 by Robb Timlin

Robb Timlin submitted this simple edit to modify iTunes to work under MacOS 8.6. Instead of using ResEdit, we will use another free application called HexEdit. (Continued...)

Updated: Select iTunes Options with a Single Click.

On Wednesday, I posted an edit to make iTunes react to a single click on its controls even if the application is in the background. Phil from Waferbaby passes along this tip:

Regarding the latest ResEdit edit for iTunes, making it respond to single clicks - you said that Soundjam does this. Surprised by what I had just read, I tested it out. No deal, just like I thought.

I thought though, that I might as well investigate. So I popped it open in ResEdit, opened SIZE ID -1 and sure enough, halfway down there's an option for Get front clicks. Set it to 1, save, launch Soundjam, and I've got it responding to front clicks.

Thought you'd like to know.

Hot Topics in the Forum

Interested is clock chipping your Mac? It's the equivalent of sky diving your hardware. It's fast and furious, and you just keep hoping your shoot opens. This forum thread lists several sites that cover the topic.

More than a year ago, I squeezed an LED into the back of my Powerbook display to light up the Apple logo on my Powerbook. According to this forum thread, it's much easier to do with an iBook.

  • A great looking Interarchy Interface was sent by James Down. Called InterStrip, it acts almost like the Control Strip. Take a look.

  • A nice MOSS, ATM combination was created by Andrew Symington. It shows a beautiful summer beach scene called Paradise. Just the kind of place I wish to be right now.

  • Charlie Campbell sent an Audion 2 skin based on the "Stain Boy" cartoon.

  • Frank sent us an anti-Windows MOSS. Just looking at the waiving flag logo makes me want to hurl...

  • Jeff sent us his first contribution - a brushed metal AIM splash.

My snapshot picks for the month of December have just been released! Swing on by and take a gander.
Saddle up folks! We’re rounding up Friday’s snapshots:

  • This snapshot from Hnz displays some web authoring and PHP development in progress. SoundJam is handling the background music along the top.

  • Sure, anyone can chat on one screename, but John has shown us in this snapshot that he can chat on three AIM screenames at once: AIM for Classic, Fire for OS X, and AIM Express for Java! A custom desktop picture of a wood fire is in the background and Akio’s Graphite Theme takes care of the interface.

  • William Bart’s BBX Platinum K-Scheme is showcased in this submission from Pablo Mingo. Audion is dishing out tunes in the upper right. Icons from Xicons and Icon Factory abound.

  • This contribution from Rene demonstrates the multiple avenues users can take to access their drives under Mac OS X. His PhotoReal icons are prominently displayed throughout.

  • Sara Romini is back with another screenshot this time bearing her custom “BubbleSnow” desktop picture along with Albie Wong’s Echelon K-Scheme. Audion, overhauled with Matt Chaput’s Glass face, is kicking out songs in the lower right.

I try and keep my sentimentality down to a dull roar, but today I just can't resist. I received a brief note from someone who frequently submits news and desktops to the ResExcellence Archives, which I want to share. He says "I would like to thank you personally for your wonderful help and support. Without you, my voice would have been muted." While I appreciate the sentiment and say you're welcome, I need to respond in kind by saying without you and all the others who congregate here, we would have no voice at all! Cheers

Icons - Desktops: We've got three more Icon Sets from some very talented pixel pushers, all of them Pixelpalooza contest entries, and 6 brand new desktops. All on display for today's update.

  • Paul Sahner was just plain old happy one day, and created a "ResEx silver" desktop. Of course it features your favorite website in 1024x resolution.

  • Juan Santiago is a Mac user with a need to share the joy of owning such a great computer. "Rust DP" is his vibrant expression, which comes in 1280x resolution.

  • "NapCat" DeskTops by Scott Raleigh were created using the awesome 3-D program Infini-D, Photoshop and the 'Napster Cat' logo as a model. This one come in three resolutions.

  • You'll have to excuse Jeff C. Hoogmoed when he made "Moon Cube", but was listening to 'Tangerine Dream' at the time. This trippy desktops comes in 1024x resolution.

  • "Desk rana", by Emanuele Martinelli depicts a larger than life Photoshop-filtered tree frog resting under the Apple logo. Comes in 1024x resolution.

  • When I first looked at "3/24" by Paul Sahner I was actually clueless as to what it was about. Upon opening the latest version of Macworld this evening, splashed across the pages was copy a plenty about the 3-24 release of OSX. I got it. Get this 'Aqua' desktop in 1024x resolution.

Today's News by CletusKines courtesy of Tadashi Yonetani. I love penguins!

You still have time to enter our two giveaway contests. Be the one who names the unnamed theme at DogHouse Online and you could find yourself possessing ThemeChecker. To find out what the theme looks like, waddle over to the Upcoming Page at Doghouse. The winner will be announced this Friday. Enter here!

Then come back here and enter our second contest. This time your prize could be FolderGuard by MacZ Software. Get some great protection from prying eyes all for free.

Kineticon 1.7.2 is a maintenance release that fixes a "type 3 error" with QuickTime player and some other applications. This version also fixes a bug that could cause Kineticon to freeze when loading kines and provides other minor, cosmetic bug fixes. For those who have never tried this icon animation program, give it a try, it's really a cool concept. There are tons of "kines" available here. The ones you see pictured are by Tadashi Yonetani, who has many wonderfully designed kines on his site.

Expression is now at version 1.3.5. The list of changes, however, seems to have remained the same for this version from the previous. Expression will allow easy manipulation of your sound files for Outlook Express and Entourage e-mail programs.

MultiAlias 1.2 is a minor enhancement upgrade. The default name now reflects the number of files linked to it. An alert dialog was added if Multialias finds items that have moved or are missing.

File Freak 3.0.1 is out with many changes and enhancements listed below. This file search utility is designed to work with both Classic and Mac OS X.

  • Seamless cross-platform parity between "Classic" Mac OS 8/9 and Mac OS X.

  • Finder-style browser interface providing date created/modified, version, and size of every file.

  • Enhanced drag-and-drop functionality.

  • "Get Info" command added.

  • Ability to search by partial or full file name.

  • Takes advantage of dynamic memory allocation in Mac OS X.

  • Dozens of interface enhancements and a kagillions of bug fixes.

Themes and Schemes:

Another theme site, IreiMac has closed its doors. The homepage thanks all visitors for support throughout the years. They created IreiMac, which is one of my favorite themes and most recently released iWindow. We wish them well.

Butt_O'sigh has updated the Klassik Kaleidoscope scheme. If you have not yet tried this Aqua appearance scheme, drop on over to Desktopper and take a peek.

We haven't visited Theme.org in a while. I stopped by last night and found some really outstanding desktop themes and screenshots. I found this particular Aqua flavored screenshot especially attractive!

Antonio Flores Aldama recently updated one of his apps and released a new one! Modem Script Gen. received an update, and the new program is called AppSwitch Prefs. Like the Applescript at the bottom of today's page, it controls placement, size and orientation of the Application Switcher.

REALbasic 3 beta has been updated to version 5. I don't mean to get nostalgic, but it seems like only yesterday they released version 3. Oh wait, it was! :) At least you can always be sure the folks at REAL Software are burning the midnight oil.

MacInstruct has passed another milestone on its way to becoming a huge MEGA-site. :) Matthew Cone had to reorganize the tutorials into sub-catagories. His booming growth is to your benefit! Take a look at the new page and catch up on all the past articles you missed.

Gwenhiver sent this handy tip for Apple's new media player, iTunes. This simple modification will make iTunes react to a single click on its controls even if the application is in the background (as Audion or SoundJam do). (Continued...)

X-Tips

The other day we were talking about how long file names in MacOS X were truncated in MacOS 9. Carsten Klapp sends this explanation:

The strange letters at the end of truncated long filenames from Mac OS X correspond to the file's or folder's reference number in the directory, converted to hexadecimal so that it uses up fewer filename characters. It's not pretty but it sure beats Windows 95's "MYDOCU~1.TXT".

This value was chosen to avoid any possibility of a duplicate filename resulting from truncating the long name. The reference number is guaranteed to be unique since each file or folder is assigned a unique number by the
file system when a file is created.

Note that HFS+ directly supports long filenames, it is the Finder itself and classic applications that cannot make use of the long filename feature of HFS+.

I have confirmed this myself by examining the folder reference number of a truncated folder name with Resorcerer. When I find any documentation from Apple about this I will send a link.

Today's News by Cletus

It is time for another giveaway. This week, the contest is sponsored by MacZ Software. The prize will be two free registrations for FolderGuard:

“FolderGuard is a multi-user; password-protected shareware utility designed to keep your folders private from prying eyes. FolderGuard supports multiple user accounts, which can all have private folder lists.”

I think for this giveaway we will try something different. Instead of the old enter to win format, let's try a more creative approach. Michael Coyle is always saying how creative the ResExcellence readers are, so why not use that creativity to win a prize! Read the instructions on this page for guidelines on how to enter.

Iconizer Pro 1.3.5 is now out. This version works with Finder 9.1, provides markedly improved speed, allows you to work properly under the classic environment while in Mac OS X and fixes some other minor bugs.

mile23 Development and Consulting has released a new product called "Wowser." Wowser is described as being useful for people who have more than one web browser installed on their Macintosh. This could prove to be a great idea. I often find myself using more than one web browser throughout the day. Wouldn't it be nice to not have the default one opening with every click!

When the system tells the default web browser to open an URL, Wowser intercepts that command and looks to see whether the default browser is already running. If it isn't, and some other web browser is, then the command is sent to that other one instead.

OtherMenu has gone to version 2.0.4. OtherMenu creates a system-wide hierarchical menu somewhat like the Apple menu. Besides opening applications and documents, it runs 28 little utilities called externals. This version provides a few fixes:

  • Fixed a crash when using "Instant Info" within a Carbon application.

  • Packages (folders masquerading as files) now show the proper icon and don't show a submenu.

  • Fixed a bug in Find..., where folder names were sometimes displayed in italics.

  • There is no longer a warning when you update to a newer version of the Mac OS.

  • This version of OtherMenu includes version 2.0.1 of the Date/Time external, which fixed a Y2K bug

Themes and Schemes:

Theme Checker is still up for grabs! In order to qualify for a free registration, go to DogHouse and click on the "Upcoming" page and give the "Unnamed" theme a decent name! Use this e-mail address to enter.

Maury McCowan made a promise last week and today he keeps it with the release of AquaX III. If you have been running the beta releases of Mac OS X, you can tell Maury has put in a lot of hard work on this K-Scheme to make it realistic. If you want to get use to the Aqua appearance and can't wait for the March 24th release, now is your chance to experience it! In addition to the AquaX III release, Maury is also releasing a companion desktop pic tomorrow, called "AquaStripe." Check out the desktops section at RAILhead for this picture.

SharpTang is Akio’s newest release for Kaleidoscope. Does any one remember Tang? It is an orange powder drink mix. What am I talking about? Well, the scheme is orange colored. It is not an overbearing orange however and is very well done. The scheme also comes with some bonus icons in MacOS and IconDropper Format.

Akio has also updated Sharp Indigo and Graphite to tie in with the newest release of Kaleidoscope. Stop over and pick the newest version of these two very nice schemes.

New Section at ResExcellence: During the recent reader survey at ResEx, a common request was for a links page to other GUI sites. While a great idea, it takes a lot of time to do a great link page and we didn't want one if it couldn't be the best! We have found a way...

Melissa Coyle, daughter of webmaster Michael Coyle, is the new Links Editor at ResExcellence. The Links Section will be updated every Monday and provides a form for readers to suggest a site for the page.

A common problem with a links page is that after a short time, the number of dead sites can exceed the good ones! Since Melissa's time will be spent only on links, you can be confident you'll never get a 404! So stop by the section and send her the link to your second favorite GUI site (since ResExcellence is your first!).

Polling Place

While several readers emailed to say they use both: patterns with a transparent picture on top, most ResEx readers just use a desktop picture. It's too bad the desktop picture doesn't load at the very beginning of the boot process. You may think this is impossible, but it's standard in Linux, where a desktop picture is present behind the log in window.

After my comments last week that the new Titanium Powerbook looked a little "PC" in its design, I received several emails both pro and con. So this week, the Polling Place asks all of you, "Do you like the design of the Titanium?"

Speaking of Linux, tomorrow ResExcellence will post streaming audio of an interview/discussion I had with Jeff Carr, president of LinuxPPC. At 4:30 minutes long, the discussion is not only interesting, but a test of streaming audio at ResEx. Stop back tomorrow to give it a listen. If it works out well, we'll do more in the future.

One of the most popular ResEx edits of all time is the one to Modify Apple's CD/DVD drivers to mount third party drives. The creator of the edit, Anthony Saxton, wrote to say that the edit still works under MacOS 9.1. "It looks like Apple has no intention or need to update the SCSI driver anymore. Version i.4.3 will work with the same edit as 1.3.1/1.3.5".

Joe Block has posted a package that allows Airport cards to work under MacOS X.

X-Tips

A little bluebird landed on my shoulder and sang about this site which has posted snapshots of Apple's latest inhouse build of MacOS X. This is the same build they were showing at Macworld. What I like to call the "Look but Don't Touch" build.

Jason Sears asked a very interesting question regarding MacOS X and long file names. How are they supported? There is no information yet on Apple's site, but this is what I discovered with a little experimentation.

MacOS X supports long file names. Very long - up to 255 characters, but only the first 150 are visible on the desktop when an icon text box is selected. If you use the File Inspector (Get Info), you can scroll with the arrows to see an entire name.

When an icon is not selected, only the first 18 characters of a name are visible.

But what happens if you view that filename under MacOS 9? Only 31 characters are displayed and the truncated characters from MacOS X are converted to some form that eludes me.

I imagine that after the release of MacOS X, Apple will post a TIL outlining these changes.

Updated: Extract Fonts from an Application for use System-wide

Here I thought I was so clever with my edit to extract fonts from an application. Maybe readers emailed me an easier way. Skel was the first:

There is an easier way to extract fonts from an app. Simply change the type and creator of the application to FFIL and DMOV (be sure to writing down the original type and creator!) . It will now have a font suitcase icon. Open it, and your font(s) will be inside. Option drag them to the desktop (thus copying and not moving them). Change the type and creator of your application back to the original. Now you have the fonts.

It doesn't get much easier than that! Thanks to everyone who replied.

Snapshots by Jeremy Hoesly

Due to the hoards of snapshot submissions accumulating in my backlog, I have decided to extend the daily yield of snapshots to six to help whittle down the pile. So hold on to your hats folks because the Snapshot Section is kicking into overdrive:

  • Bigfat from Bigfat Software submitted this contribution touting the custom “Merry Bawkmas” desktop picture. Some custom Clan Lord icons along with icons from Icon Factory are on display.

  • The “Binary” desktop picture and Kei Kinoshita’s Grafito K-Scheme debut in this submission from Erik Hope. Audion is providing the music in the upper left.

  • This OS X-style snapshot from Doug Hoxworth is actually a Windows machine in disguise! DesktopX handles much of the interface transformation from the dock to the clock. CoolPlayer, configured with an Apple Music Player-style skin, is dishing out tunes in the lower left.

  • Customize.org’s “Gravity Well” desktop picture is featured in this screenshot from Jerry James along with the Aqua II K-Scheme. Audion, outfitted with the Reintegration face, is tickling the eardrums in the upper left-hand corner. Icons were provided by Xicons and icons.cx in addition to a few homegrown ones.

  • Mike V. submits this dual monitor snapshot featuring an Azul Dark desktop in conjunction with the Aqua II K-Scheme. Audion, overhauled with the XPlayer face, and SoundJam, equipped with the Aqua X skin, are playing side by side near the left edge of the first screen.

  • This contribution from Sergio Recabarren showcasing the latest OS update is featuring a custom desktop pattern. Macast is serving up the music at lower left. A smorgesbord of icons from icons.cx, Icon Factory, and Xicons inhabits the desktop.

Captivated with the thought of sending your own snapshot? Read our submission guidelines and then hop to it!
