File Freak 3.0 is now available. It has a completely new interface and is no longer in beta testing for Mac OS X. When it comes to finding files quickly File Freak does an outstanding job. File Freak dynamically minimizes the matching list of files as you type so that you are quickly provided with what you are looking for.

Dot What"No You Turn Software" has released Dot What? This very useful piece of software will provide the user with all the information they need to access a file. For instance, Dot What? currently has a database of over 1,500 file extensions. Can you believe that there are that many? No-U-Turn Software constantly updates the database also.

It is compatible with the new Mac OS 9.1! Here is how it works; Simply launch Dot What?, type in the questionable file extension, and instantly be presented with its description and recommended application for accessing the file.

Greg Landweber has updated PowerWindows to version 2.4.5. "Power Windows is a small control panel that lets you tap into your Mac's unused processor power to perform amazingly cool effects with windows and menus." Version 2.4.5 is a maintenance release and provides the following fixes.

  • Menu transparency once again works correctly in Appearance themes.

  • Translucent window dragging now works correctly with PopChar Pro.

  • Fixes a glitch drawing transparent menus with Kaleidoscope running.

Jérome Foucher has begun beta testing two of his very popular shareware programs; A-Dock and Wapp pro. Primarily the testing is to bring the two applications into agreement for use in Mac OS X. If you do not use Wapp pro you do not need to update A-Dock. Wapp pro has received a major upgrade however, which includes the following:

  • 100% brand new code

  • Much much faster

  • Tracks applications' visibility

  • Keeps track of windows from applications that are not front most

IMHO Jeffrey Rosen has a great little application in AIMM 1.2. It is very stable, and best of all it lets me get online to chat when AIM will not! Enhancements are coming along at a great pace and best of all, they are all user requested and valuable. No Fluff! If you have not tried it yet, I recommend you do so right now.

James Thomson is pleased to announce that: "I've just installed the final release of Mac OS 9.1, and you'll be glad to hear that DragThing is working perfectly so far. I didn't expect any problems since I'd already been testing it, but it's good to try it on the actual release." Should you run into any problems, he asks that you notify him.

On the other hand there may one or two bumps in the road for FinderPop and Mac OS 9.1. Turly states that;

"The About item for Carbon apps (e.g., Script Editor) doesn't work if you're using FinderPop's Hierarchical Apple Menu. If this bothers you, turn off that checkbox in the FP control panel's Behaviour subpanel. Helium 3.1 and FP are incompatible under 9.1; Tiger Technologies, the makers of Helium, found that renaming the Helium control panel to 'aHelium' or something so that it loads before FinderPop gets everything working again." He is working on a fix.

Themes and Schemes:

Peter Harte is re-releasing (until further notice) Aqua II+ for Kaleidoscope. Version 2.5 now features transparent menus and menu boarders. It also has a few cosmetic tweaks thrown in for good measure! Get it while it is hot and trust me on this, it is hot!

Name this Theme!Michael Rabe will be releasing GlassWorks Ruby v4.0 and GlassWorks Sage v4.0 today. These are part of the GlassWorks series that seems to just keep growing. Additionally he will be posting two previews for you to check out. The first is GlassBox which is a very clean theme with Glass like buttons. The eventual plan is to release variations of this theme in the iMac colors.

The second one (pictured to the right) has not been named yet. Now is your chance ResExers! Michael is looking for a good name for this theme. He is asking all ResExcellence readers to submit an idea. The person who submits the winning name will receive a free registration to Theme Checker. I will let everyone know who wins on next Friday.

Extract Fonts from an Application for use System-wide by Michael Coyle

Applications can contain their own exclusive font resources. They can't be accessed by other applications. For example, Quicktime Player 5 uses a font called Sydnie for some text items and the position counter. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to extract the font for placement in the System's Font Folder. It will then be available to all applications. (Continued...)

Today's News by Cletus

I eventually arrived home around midnight on Sunday from San Francisco. It was very exciting to be in an airplane during an aborted take-off— twice! Although the last leg of my journey was only an hour by air, it took me nearly 7 hours to get there. The plane from San Francisco to Pittsburgh was continuing to Gatwick, England. I have no doubt those passengers made it home before me.

The actual time in San Francisco was wonderful albeit busy. Both hotel rooms provided excellent views of this wonderful city. Michael's view was perhaps a little better. It was also a pleasure to meet several readers at MacWorld and at the various parties we attended.

I have a bit of catching up to do, so let’s proceed with the update.

Iconizer Pro 1.3.4 will allow you to create an image from a group of 32-bit icons. The image can then be used for a background of CD or folder. New in this version are:

  • Now supports Mac OS 9.1.

  • Improved speed of iconization.

  • Improved image cache method to reduce memory usage.

  • Added clean up commands to Special menu.

  • Allow you to rearrange or clean up icon set.

Smart Scroll has been updated for compatibility with Mac OS 9.1. Version 3.7.1 also runs under Mac OS X's Classic. Originally designed to bring proportional scroll bars to finder and application windows, Smart Scroll will also allow users to control the speed of scrolling on really fast machines such as a G3 and G4.

The Free Memory Show 2, Public Beta is now available. With this application you can; display the computers free memory in a small unobtrusive floating window, have it notify you when the free memory drops below an adjustable value and quit applications to help defragment memory.

TaskMenuBar was updated twice while I was away. The current version is 2.3.2. Version 2.3.1 brought compatibility for Mac OS 9.1 to this control panel, along with a bug that was squashed with the recent release of 2.3.2. All users are asked to update to this version.

Expression 1.2.0 is a completely free application providing users control over your Sound Sets in Outlook Express and Entourage. Expression 1.2.0 adds a number of features:

  • Sound names are now retained

  • Editing the window's title is now the name of the Sound Set.

  • Drag and drop is now fully supported. To open an existing Sound Set, you can simply drag the file to Expression's icon. A new editing window will be created.

  • Expression now sets a Sound Set's file type to that of Outlook Express if a "Reminder" sound is not included with the Sound Set.

ExtensionStrip 2.0b4 is now available for testing. This is one of my favorite programs because it is so customizable. ES is now compatible with 7.5 to 9.1 systems. Many other features have been added to this update. I recommend you stop by Ammon’s homepage and check the version history.

Themes and Schemes:

RailHead Design has updated their very popular K-Scheme, AquaX III 1.1 after discovering it revealed a bug in Internet Explorer that may cause a crash. Since it is unlikely this bug could be fixed in IE as quickly as could be done in the scheme, Maury went ahead and made the modifications to the scheme.

Desktopper posted several interesting K-Schemes while I was away which included: 0303Shoal, 7979 and MoonK2. Updated was U.T 1.4. They are very nicely done scheme. Stop by and check them out.

I know from previous polls that many ResEx readers also maintain their own web servers. Ekim Software just released Socket Sifter 1.8 - Tool to communicate, listen or connect, through TCP on any port. In the hands of a cracker, it can be used to scan your machine looking for ports to exploit, but it's also a tool a webmaster can use to make sure the machine is secure.

I did a little sniffing of the ResEx server and discovered I had a few unknown ports open. With the help of the LinuxPPC User List, I learned how to close them, making the server more secure.

The image on the right shows which ports remain open: ftp, telnet, mail, and web - as few as is absolutely necessary

So if you run your own server, give Socket Sifter a try. You may be surprised at what you find. Hopefully before someone else.

Terminal Commands: View and Kill an Errant App by Michael Coyle

One of the most problematic applications that runs under MacOS is the Classic environment. It often freezes and resists a Force-quit. Part of the problem may be the fact that two applications make up the Classic environment: TruBlue and Classic. While you can force-quit Classic, the TruBluEnv may continue to run. A symptom of this is the System slowing to a crawl. This simple tutorial will show how to quit any belligerent application in MacOS X or LinuxPPC! (Continued...)

X-Tips

John_g sent two tips for the Finder in MacOS X:

In the Finder, pressing tab will switch between icons (selecting them). Another one is you can press cmd+shift+tab to cycle backwards through the apps in the Dock vs. cmd+tab to go forward through the Dock. And finally, option-clicking something in the Dock hides the current app and switches to the one clicked.

Swing on by and glance at Wednesday’s crop of snapshots:

  • Chief SETI@Home mega-cruncher Donald Ayer sent in this screenshot sporting the “Earth” desktop picture from NASA’s Planetary Photojournal in combination with Duncan Cowen’s Co-Pilot K-Scheme. SoundJam, overhauled with the Phatbar skin, is taking music requests in the upper right-hand corner. However, the main focus is on the number of data units completed with Donald’s dual-G4 beast.

  • This contribution from Will Croft touts the “PHOSXAqua” desktop picture but is covered by Internet Explorer. Audion however, outfitted with Paul Styles’ Diddy Chrome face, is up close and personal in the upper right. Christi’s Tree is responsible for the Christmas tree poking out of the lower left-hand corner.

  • Eiexc submitted this snapshot featuring a desktop picture from vir2l. SoundJam is kicking out soundwaves in the upper right-hand corner while RealPlayer cranks out a video clip in the opposite corner. Icons were provided by icons.cx and Icon Factory.

  • The “Carina Nebula” desktop picture included with TechTool Pro 3 and Arlo Rose’s Onyx K-Scheme debut in this submission from Brian Soltis. Nicely done.

  • David King sends this ironic snapshot of a scene that really happened in front of his house recently. Looks like PC On Call was having a Window's kinda day. PC_breakdown comes in a jumbo 1377x resolution, just in case you forgot why you don't own a PC.

  • Raool, the creator of Ra's Page submits a stylish set of desktops for your consumption. The first of these is titled "Pixels", and comes in 1152x resolution with two variations included.

  • Josh Bishop has more up his very creative sleeves than just icons. "Green Creation" is the first of a number of his desktops to be added to the Archives. This one comes in 1152x resolution.

Satisfy your snapshot cravings with Tuesday’s round:

  • This snapshot from an anonymous contributor showcases an old IIsi. The memory frugal iCab browser is running in the background along with the equally conservative Musashi email client: all in 9 MB of RAM. Those were the days…

  • Arena Design’s “iMac Ruby” desktop picture and Butt O’Sigh’s Goinsane K-Scheme debut in this gorgeous contribution from Pablo Mingo. Audion, equipped with the Emerald face, is tickling the eardrums in the lower right.

  • This OS X Beta snapshot from Kevin Redington sports RAILhead Design’s “Fire” desktop picture. Windows 98, emulated with RealPC, is displaying schematics in ElectronicWorkbench. Audion is serving up music in the upper left-hand corner.

Applescripts 1-16-01 Applescript/Scripting by Michael

Joe Szedula updated John Murden's BBEdit script for fixing up HTML documents and converting characters like & to the html equivalent & (Download new script)

I took your script and make the "tell" portion into a handler. I then set it up so the user could either double click on the script to launch it and it will prompt for a file just like yours did or drop folders or files on the script and it will clean each text file. If the folders have folders those will be cleaned as well.

This script will compromise security on your computer, but it will also make your life easier. You decide. If you are using Apple's Keychain manager mainly to remember passwords on a system where security is not a concern, then this simple script by Jonathan Woolson may be for you. Placed in the Startup Folder, it unlocks the Keychain at boot.

tell application "Keychain Scripting"
unlock keychain "your keychain" with password "your password"
quit
end tell

Replace "your keychain" and "your password" with the same info from Keychain Access control panel. Save as Classic Applet into your Startup Items folder. The Keychain will no longer pester you for a password, ever. CAUTION: This will, of course, give your password away to anyone to anyone who gets a hold of the script. Placing the script in your Startup Items folder will leave your Mac physically compromised to anyone who can get access to it.

(Cletus' plane was delayed returning from Macworld. Moving back to the top to fill in is Michael)

Polling Place by Michael

Over one third of ResEx readers take their photos digitally. That's a high percentage, but I would not have been surprised if the number reached 50%. Here at the Coyle House, we never pull out the 35mm film camera, preferring the Epson digital. For many months, we used both cameras, but with the high quality of prints, we leave the old camera in the drawer. The one remaining weak-link in my digital photo studio is the fact that the Epson 740 doesn't use the new long term inks. Hopefully, I can remedy that situation right after I'm done saving for my Titanium. :)

ResEx Desktop Editor Dan Flax and I were recently discussing the older style Desktop Patterns (ppat resources). One of us believes that everyone is using desktops. The other believes we may be surprised at the number of pattern users. We agreed to let the Polling Place settle our friendly wager. The week, the Polling Place asks, "Is your desktop image a pattern or a picture?"

Macworld 2001 by Michael

Titanium. My Mac is always a Powerbook. My first was a Powerbook 140 and I currently have a 2000 Pismo. This latest addition was the buzz of the show. You have probably read the specs by now, so I'll only add a few comments. While it's a beautiful machine, something a little speedier than a 500 Mhz G4 would have been nice. And my only other gripe is that there isn't a curve to be found in the design. Compare the Titanium to the Vaio, and Apple's portable looks derivative. Before you start slamming my mailbox, let me be clear that I'm not comparing OS, CPU, or screen size, all I'm saying is this: When I'm commuting on the train with my Pismo on my lap, it's clear from four rows away I have a Powerbook. Something in which I take great pride. With a Titanium on my lap, the guy in row seven thinks I bought a new Vaio. Of course, I'm still saving to buy one...

MacToday magazine announced at the show that they changed their name to Mac Design. The print version has a great tutorial on creating Aqua Buttons. It's not online yet, but there are two others on "Removing Red Eye" and "Creating Temporary Brushes in Photoshop 6.0".

REAL Software was running demos of the latest REALbasic 3 beta. They had Macs loaded with VirtualPC showing the cross compiling abilities of their software. I wish I had the time to dive into REALbasic. I think it's an appropriate topic for ResExcellence. Please contact me if you would like to write for ResExcellence regarding REALbasic. Maybe we can put something together!

For you Applescript gurus, Late Night Software was at the show. Script Debugger 2.0 is their super editor, a replacement for Apple's Script Editor.

While strolling past the OmniGroup booth (makers of Omniweb, OmniPDF, and more for MacOS X), I met ResEx contributor Rick Roe from Icons.cx. Like all ResEx readers and contributors, Rick is a nice guy, so stop by his site and view his cool icons, desktops, and goodies.

Hey! Who's that in front of Apple's Corporate headquarters in Cupertino? Why it's Cletus™, Dan, and Michael. Thanks to an Apple employee who is a long time reader, we were given an opportunity to tour the campus (authorized by a superior so it was all on the up-and-up). It would be impolite to discuss what we saw, but it was most impressive and reaffirmed my belief that Apple works hard to make the best computers. Oh, BTW, personal note to our tour guide. Don't forget I left half my meatball sandwich in your trunk!

(Thanks to Jeremy for staying behind and holding down the fort. Fortunately, we didn't need him to wire us any bail.)

Tools of the Trade

Well that didn't take long. Less than one week after its release, we have our first iTunes Skin thanks to Joshua Ochs. While it's a subtle change, Joshua shows that by editing the PICT resources, you can customize the look of the application.

You won't be able to change the shape of the window or move buttons, but most of the widgets and buttons are ResEdit resources that you con copy into your favorite imagining program for modifications. And thanks to an unknown Apple developer, the PICT resources are named for easy identification.

Powerbook slow to wake from Sleep? While at the show, I commented on how fast MacOS X wakes from sleep. While MacOS 9.1 is faster than its predecessors, it can still take up to 30 seconds for it to wake. The solution? Turn off Appletalk. Doing so dropped my wake-from-sleep time down to 6 seconds. Still not as fast as the 2 seconds for MacOS X, but much better than 30 seconds!

User Contributed Splash Screens:

  • Do you like metal? Cold brushed aluminum? Mike Finch created another great looking Interarchy Interface that's right up your alley.

  • ResEx regular Alan Janes blewup the Starship Voyager to prove his point in this Internet Exploder splashscreen.

  • We have another cool Toast skin. This one is from Nicolas Cardot.

  • Do you use iView? Andrew Todd make a nice looking splash replacement for you.

  • Jeffrey Ryan created a splash screen for AIM that's looks great. I like it because it doesn't have that little yellow logo running logo-man! :)

  • Digital Blasphemy’s “Red Sky” desktop picture and Ben Mackin’s Liquid Theme debut in this contribution from John Bailey. Two cool transparent iMac icons are situated in the upper right-hand corner.

  • Yann Bettremieux submitted this screenshot sporting a space desktop picture. Except for a few icons lining the right edge, everything is launched from TaskMenuBar, a launcher that lives in the menubar.

  • A desktop picture from his TH¥ME collection coupled with William Bart’s BBX Platinum K-Scheme debuts in this contribution from Timm Hoff. Audion, retooled with Rob Gentile’s TechnoJam Classic face, is pumping out soundwaves along the bottom. Icon Factory’s Smoothicons collection is also showcased.
