This Sunday you will be able to vote for the color of the couch in Erick Tejkowski's living room. We will post a form on the contest page allowing you to select the color. We hope you have been checking out the colors each day. Erick will select a winner and I will post the winning name in this spot on Monday. All votes must be in by 10pm EST. on Sunday to qualify for the drawing for an autographed copy of REALbasic for Dummies!.

David Yeh has posted an update to his X-Launch program. X-Launch is a small launcher intended to be a replacement for Apple's Launcher. "It is designed to work in much the same way as Launcher and offers similar functionality, while at the same time occupying a smaller footprint and offering some customization features that hopefully make it more aesthetically pleasing." Version 2.11 adds a category called Tooltips, an option to set a "bring-to-front" hot key, and several other improvements and bug fixes. X-Launch requires a PowerPC Macintosh running MacOS 8 or higher.

X-Launch v.2.11

TaskMenuBar 2.4.0 has been released providing support for Control Strip modules. It just keeps getting better. TaskMenuBar uses the empty space on the menu bar for many common operations such as launching and switching applications, and opening files. Because it only uses the menu bar, unlike other utilities, it will never obscure or be obscured by other windows." This has always been a very popular item with ResExcellence readers.

element K Journals' Mac Authority has posted an article called: "Making A Wireless Network With Multiple AirPort Base Stations" by Ron Wilder. If you want to broaden the scope of what Airport can do for your wireless network, this is the article for you.

It has been a while since we last visited Themes.org. But with the weekend coming up, I thought you may wish to take some time to look around at the screenshots and new themes. Of interest, is this theme,

Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle

Got a new Mac? Dax Mailloux sent this tip on Restarting with the Pro Keyboard: press ctrl + eject to get the dialog that comes up when you press the Power button on old keyboards. It works under Classic MacOS 9 and MacOS X.

ButtonMaker 2.4 has been released. There are a number of new features that may make this update the most significant release to date. Among them, is the ability to set the transparency with button graphics designed to take advantage of the feature.

They've been busy over at Fontosaurus Text! Head over there to grab two new fonts: Chairman Mao and Uhop Lite

If you have Gravite installed, Dragon Tongue found an Easter Egg just in time for Easter! Drag any icon on the desktop while holding the control and option keys. Then let go and the icon will drop to the bottom of the screen with a loud crash. (The icon can even fall into a popup window!)

MacOS X Tips by Michael Coyle

Currently, MacOS X displays the 5 most recent applications and documents under the Apple Menu. How would you like to increase that number? Thanks to a tip from Ammon Skidmore, you can!

Ammon is the author of the popular program "Extension Strip", a full featured replacement for Apple's Control Strip.

This simple modification involves editing the com.apple.recentitems.plist file with a text editor. (Continued...)

Tom Hackett found that clicking the minimize button while holding the Option key in MacOS X will minimize all the windows of that application. It's kind of like closing all windows by holding the Option key and clicking the close box in classic Mac OS. And if you want to change the effect when a window gets sucked into the Dock, try these terminal commands:

  • defaults write com.apple.Dock mineffect suck
  • defaults write com.apple.Dock mineffect genie
  • defaults write com.apple.Dock mineffect scale

A reader sent a link to an article by the lead programmer on Darwin, Fred Sanchez. It outlines the file structures in Classic MacOS and Unix systems, and how MacOS X has attempted to reconcile these differences. While it's not very technical, it is long!

Toady pointed out that Evatac Software is off the web due to a bankrupt ISP. They are the makers of Snoop, a handy utility for moving the data fork into the resource fork. Until they are back in business, you can download Snoop 1.6 from ResExcellence.

  • Nickolas Cardot has submitted a variation on a recently submitted MOSS. (Sort of a James Bond Psychedelic number!)

  • Nick also created a Toast skin that would look great with the Dimple Theme, or any brushed metal style.

  • In the last of this series, Robert Marking sends Boot and Login panels for MacOS X customized for iBook users.

  • I still don't get it, but Ed Cruwys Dubman sent a matching MOSS and ATM featuring "All Your Base Are Belong to Us".

  • From Gladiator, MAJArch Studios created a nice looking MOSS of Russell Crowe. (Ancient Roman insult: "That Gludious Maximus is such an ass.")

  • An Interarchy Interface based the Graphite Aqua style was created by David Schlosnagle.

  • Looking for aliens? If you belong to MacObserver's SETI Team, do we have a Netscape splash for you!

After an unexpected hiatus, I’ve returned bearing Friday’s snapshots:

  • A G-Force desktop picture and Albie Wong’s K-Scheme are showcased in this snapshot from Jonathan McDermott. Audion is serving up music in the upper left-hand corner. Weather Grok dishes out weather updates in the upper right-hand corner.

  • This OS X snapshot from Tom Schlander touts the “Flower Power” desktop picture. Icons from RAILhead Design and Icon Factory are scattered throughout.

  • Cletus, head hauncho over our Software Archive, contributes this screenshot sporting Kris Kiss’ “Ti Book American Beauty” desktop picture. Cool.

  • The “Matrix Pods” desktop picture and Mihai Parparita’s Tephra K-Scheme debut in this contribution from Cody Walton. Very awesome!

  • Regular contributor Jeff Welsh sends this OS X submission bearing a custom desktop picture. Icons from Xicons along with a few custom ones are also featured.

  • Dan Yang submits this contribution featuring the custom “Sphere” desktop picture. Audion, retro-fitted with Chris Porter’s Knot face, is kicking out soundwaves in the upper right. Icons from Icon Factory and icons.cx abound.

Today's News by Cletus

Have you been keeping your eye on the color of the couch? Now what is Cletus™ talking about? Our Couch Contest of course. Full details can be found here.

How about that Michael Rabe? What a great job he did with Pastel Blue for MacOS X. If you haven't yet checked out this new theme, you really need to. Well done Michael!

Clixsounds has released their new sound for the week. This week it is an alert beep called "Villainous." A very ominous sound awaits your next faux pas.

The Tilery 4.2.1 is a maintenance release for the recently released 4.2 version. It restores compatibility with Mac OS 8.1 and earlier. If you are having problems with 4.2, try this update.

MenuStrip 1.5 by Adrian Diaconu for Mac OS X has been released. It is a "multi-purpose utility for Mac OS X that allows quick access to frequently used settings, such as the computer volume, monitor resolution, and color depth, right from the OS X menubar. It also features a menubar clock with chime and alarm capabilities. However, the most useful features in MenuStrip are the 'Hide All' / 'Show All' buttons and the 'Single App Mode' toggle button placed in the menu bar."

MenuStrip
MenuStrip 1.5

Drop Drawers X 1.5.4 is now available. This wonderful program reimplements key shortcuts for OS X, fixes the dancing window problem and clears up some other minor OS X issues. If you have never tried this program, I recommend doing so right away. When it comes to useful programs, this one tops the bill.

Wapp pro 3.1 gives a menu listing the windows of all running applications so you can switch between them. If you thought Mac OS 9.1 would replace this utility with their implementation of the "Window" menu you are wrong. Wapp pro is more dynamic and provides more capabilities. This version includes the following touches:

  • New feature to provide an application switcher inside the menubar

  • General compatibility with Action Menus

  • New enhanced application switching shortcuts

Scheme News:

Diezconxf has been updated by Kei. This Kaleidoscope Scheme is posted at Desktopper. Also, Millenni Ex and Millenni Zed are two new Kaleidoscope Scheme that were posted on Monday at the Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive. All three schemes are pretty sharp looking.

Here’s Tuesday’s catch of the day:

  • Brian Bauer submits this screenshot touting the “Global City Lights” desktop picture from NASA’s Planetary Photojournal. iTunes is playing a tune along the top, and icons from Xicons line the right edge.

  • One look at Bryan Jones’ submission will leave you groping for shades with its nearly fluorescent “Kundalini” desktop picture. NeXbar provides a stowage area for programs along the right edge, while DragThing harbors programs along the left edge. Selections from Xicons’s Spiffy Apps collection are also used.

  • A desktop picture capturing one of G-Force’s visual maneuvers debuts alongside Albie Wong’s ByCrom! K-Scheme in this contribution from Jonathan McDermott. Audion, outfitted with Paul Styles’ DigiChrome face, is tickling the eardrums in the upper left-hand corner.

  • A modified “Trigun” desktop picture coupled with William Bart’s Hypersleek Pro Darkside K-Scheme is showcased in this submission from Elissa Palacios. The QuickTime 5 preview release is playing a Space Ghost movie clip in the lower right-hand corner.

  • This OS X snapshot from Anthony Robertson sports a custom desktop picture rendered in Bryce. Interesting.

  • Manuel Velazquez is back with yet another screenshot bearing a desktop picture from the Metaphysical series, this time “Realms.” NeXbar stores programs along the left edge.

Theme News by Michael Rabe

Today's the big day! Pastel Blue for MacOS X is finally here. It is based on the "Classic" theme of the same name. The only place you can find this new X theme is the ResExcellence Theme Archive.

(A big tip-o-the-hat to Michael Rabe for being the first to create an entirely new theme for MacOS X. -Michael)

For those people that don't have or can't use Mac OS X on your computer, the Doghouse has been busy these past few days making more "Classic" themes. We should have some previews for you in the days to come.

See ya on the flip flop!

If you have a theme you wish to add to the Archive, drop me an email.

Applescript News by Michael Coyle

Want to simulate the bare desktop of MacOS X when booted into Classic? These Applescripts by Edward O'Rourke willl do it for you! the first one, X-Drives, tricks the Finder into hidding the mounted drives and trash by moving them to location -2000!

But what about any folders and files on the desktop? The second script, Desktop Cleanup will select ALL files and FOLDERS on the desktop and move them to a dated folder inside a folder named Desktop Archives inside the Startup Drive.

Once the items are hidden, use your favorite desktop dock to launch and open files and folders.

Download and stick both of these in the Startup Items folder and restart to see the effect. Want your drves back where they belong? Select Clean Up from the Finder View menu. If when running the script, you get an error saying the window is the wrong kind, turn off the icon "Snap to Grid" in the Finder View Options.

This week we have a very unique contest and an equally unique prize. It will require your participation for the next seven days. Here are a few hints. It involves a couch, colors and a book. Did I pique your curiosity? If I did you will need to visit the contest page for more details.

KinkyBeepII has been released. KinkyBeepII is a synthesizer that you can use to create a wide variety of sounds and sound effects. Download this application and play around with some of your alert sounds. It is a lot of fun.

Angelo Scicolone has posted IconCleaner 1.0 for use with Mac OS X only. IconCleaner is a simple utility that allows you to delete all files' icons inside a folder which you choose. IconCleaner is freeware, you can download it from this web page.

The Free Memory Show (TFMS) version 2.2 is now available. It is compatible with Mac OS 8.1 thru 9.1. It will display the computers free memory in a small unobtrusive floating window. New in this version is:

  • A new preference allows TIFFS to beep less when the free memory is below the warning setting. In previous versions TIFFS warned every time the free memory decreased by one megabyte. It is adjustable.

  • TIFFS now has a preferences file.

  • On some machines, TIFFS sometimes forgot the registration. This is now fixed

  • Other small changes and improvements.

WorkStrip 1.0b3 by Softchaos is a new central hub for your desktop. Launch, quit, hide and activate applications, open and preview documents from one elegantly designed bar.

Icon Calculator 1.0.1 is a little freeware application designed for use with Iconizer Pro. Its purpose is to avoid the little white border that Iconizer Pro will add to the icon image if it is not x times 32.

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

If over 25% of ResEx readers are using Airport is that a large number? When you consider that most Macs at home are not on any network at all, I think you could make the argument the 25% is a large part of the networked Macs. Personally, I think Apple should include Airport cards in every Powerbook, and drop the price of the base stations. But that's just me. :)

Breaking with tradition, I did my income taxes an entire week before they were due and paid what I owed with a credit card. Don't they make it easy to take your money!

I've been using TurboTax (was MacInTax) for five years and it's a great application. This week's Polling Place asks, "Did you prepare your taxes electronically?"

Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle

It's Monday, so that means Melissa has added six new sites to the ResExcellence links page! If you have a site to recommend (even your own) use the form at the bottom of the links page.

Lots of readers are emailing to ask if I will be moving the ResExcellence server to MacOS X. Currently, I do not plan on switching from LinuxPPC for several reasons.

When it was first available, I plunked down several hundred dollars for MacOS X Server. (Except for minor updates, it has been all but abandoned by Apple). ResExcellence ran off MacOS X server for several months back when I maintained the site by myself. While I was not as savvy of an admin as I am now, I wasn't a knucklehead either. Whenever I had problems or questions, I couldn't get any decent answers. The most common response was to reinstall the system software. That wasn't acceptable so I made the switch to LinuxPPC.

With Linux, I found if I needed help, there were many sources from which to draw, and most times it didn't matter if it was an Intel or PowerPC source.

After several years with Linux, I would feel quite comfortable with configuring Apache on MacOS X, but the next consideration is cost. Not only is the Linux OS free, but all the networking tools are free too. Given the razor thin margins on which a web sites must operate (especially this one!) cost is a major factor.

So while I love my Apple hardware, the server operating system I will continue to run on my PowerPC is Linux.

Take a trip down memory lane as Ben Shelton reviews the "Bungie Mac Action Sack" series of games for MacInstruct. His review has plenty of screenshots and comments on the separate games that come in the Sack.

kanzu.com is a site with a little something for everyone. Applescripters will like the many utilities listed, and if you use QuarkXPress, David Lloyd has some shareware programs to make your life easier.

Fontosaurus Text has updated with three new fonts. The free ones are Terse and XRated, while Inception is the first font in the subscription-based Font of the Month Club and comes in Regular, Narrow, and Italic.

MacOS X Tips by Michael Coyle

I can tell from the server logs that more of you are using OmniWeb under MacOSX. If you've had problems convincing MacOS X to keep OmniWeb as your default browser (instead of reverting back to IE), you can fix it by editing:

/System/Library/Preferences/Internet.preference/Contents/Resources/
English.lproj/DefaultHelperApps.plist.

Non-English users should edit the one in the .lproj folder for their preferred language. Just replace the section of the file that looks like this:

web = (
{
DisplayName = "Internet Explorer";
Info = { BundleIdentifier = "com.microsoft.explorer"; };
IsDefaultHandler = YES;
}
);

with this:

web = (
{
DisplayName = "OmniWeb";
Info = { BundleIdentifier = "com.omnigroup.OmniWeb"; };
IsDefaultHandler = YES;
}
);

Or, to keep IE in the popup menu, with this:

web = (
{
DisplayName = "Internet Explorer";
Info = { BundleIdentifier = "com.microsoft.explorer"; };
},
{
DisplayName = "OmniWeb";
Info = { BundleIdentifier = "com.omnigroup.OmniWeb"; };
IsDefaultHandler = YES;
}
);

This may not completely solve your problems, but it should help. Hopefully Apple will fix InternetConfig/LaunchServices soon so this doesn't happen in the first place.
