Today's News by CletusNo one sits on my iBook

Clio the CatThanks to all who have sent pictures of their cats to me. One of you was so torn between the Cats versus Dog poll that he sent pictures to show his dilemma. He has both Cats and Dogs. What is one to do? Simply lock them out of the room, close your eyes and click. Your vote has been cast, and even you will not know how you voted! There are no such things as hanging chads at ResExcellence!

I am not about to start posting images of all that I received, however, I thought everyone would appreciate this image of Clio, who E. Eberle states likes the warmth of the Wallstreet! I believe this would be the perfect scenerio to use Keyboard Lock. This prevents keys from functioning when there is unwanted activity going on at the keyboard, such as a cat walking across it!

Maury McCown over at RAILhead has kept his word and posted many screenshots of Mac OS X. This newest release of Mac OS X provides lots of changes from the previous Public Beta. If you want to know what to expect with the upcoming release of Mac OS X, this series of screenshots puts you in touch with the features up to this point.

Also, just in case your're wondering, concerning AquaX III Graphite he writes:

No, I haven't forgotten about this scheme release, but building, buying, and moving to a new home *did* put a dent in my schedule. Nonetheless, I will have AquaX Graphite ready for download this coming Monday, so don't forget to come back and snag your copy!

element K Journals is running an article on using Illustrator to create 3-D images. While it is easier to accomplish this in Photoshop or Bryce, this tutorial will assist you in using Illustrator to accomplish the same effects. The article is entitled: "Making Your Images Realistic While Retaining 3-D Quality," and is written by Toby Mikle.

Sleeper 3.2.3b4 is the latest release of this Energy Saver replacement by St. Clair Software. "This version improves reliability on G4 PowerMacs, properly powers down LCD screens like the Apple Studio and Cinema displays, and adds options to control processor cycling. Several compatibility problems have also been resolved." Beta 4 contains the following fixes:

  • The expert options (cmd-option-click on the Help button) now include a switch that prevents Sleeper from changing the backlight brightness of LCD screens.

  • The Sleeper Strip control strip module now correctly opens the Sleeper control panel.

Casady & Greene has posted Conflict Catcher 8.0.8. Conflict Catcher will provide total control of your startup process, extensions and control panels, CSM's and CMM's. This new version contains updates for Mac OS 9.1 sets, links, and Clean-Install System Merge information. It also offers additional support for the Mac OS X Beta under the Classic Layer with Mac OS 9.1. I never leave home without CC!

The weekend is here, so it must be time for me to recommend a trip to Theme.org for a look at this weeks past Screenshots and themes. What are you thinking Etherbrian?

Themes and Schemes:

Michael Rabe has returned from his Machu Picchu & Galapagos Island, South American vacation with several great announcements. The Incan Empire provided the setting for the development of his newest theme; GlassWorks Tangerine 4.0. Guess what color it is!?

Even more important perhaps is his release of Theme Checker 2.0. He has put much time and effort into this version while studing the marine life in the wondrous Galapagos Island archipelago. This version will meet the needs of those on all Macs, from 68K to PPC to Carbon. Hi-lites include:

  • I have added Icons (for the Classic MacOS only)

  • Added more types of windows

  • Removed the Name Boxes for the Previews

  • Fixed the small menu bug

  • Cut the price in half to $5(US)

He also mentioned he spent time swimming with the manta rays and giant turtles. Came face to face with marine iguanas and saw several sea lions! Sounds very interesting Michael.

Donald Hess is a clever gent who is using a Mac as an MP3 automotive player! He's having a problem that he hopes a clever ResEx reader can solve:

I am longtime Mac user and recently decided to put a PowerMac 6100 in my car as an MP3 player. I have only one stumbling block left to figure out. It seems that the software player I have chosen, GreyAmp, stops searching the playlist after 5 seconds. I need a time limit of about 2 minutes before it stops for this project to work. I was hoping that you and your readers could help me somehow change the timing. Your site has already helped me with several other software problems that I have taken care of, but this one has me stumped.

Well, there are only two editors left on the island after we found bits of Jeremy that had washed up on shore. Poor guy really went to pieces after failing to kill his own pig! Your remaining choices are clear. Our mean old Icon/Desktop Editor, Dan Flax, or my young and lovely daughter and Links Editor Melissa. You know what you must do next week. :)

Updated: Linux Icebox: Installing the latest KDE 2.1

After Wednesday's article on upgrading to KDE 2.1, Ian Reinhart Geiser, the KDE guru for LinuxPPC, followed up with a long list of very cool tips! Ian recommends getting the following RPMS to make KDE 2.1 really rock:
  • openldap, openssl allow for seemless access to https and ldap. For a neat trick, if you have openldap installed with the KDE2.1 beta and in the Konqueror browser type:

    ldap://ldap.nameflow.net:1389/dc%3Duk??one

Now this may not look like much, but I was able to write an LDAP browser for konqi in a few hours as an example.

  • cdparanoia (latest version). Open up Konqeror again and type in the URL line when you have an audio CD in :

    audiocd://cdrom

One of the other developers on KDE was able to use this kioslave to write a digital cdplayer in very few lines of actual code.

  • jdk or jre 1.3: Hit up this site with konqi and play the diamond mine game, after a few hours you will realize that Java fits into konqi with NO effort what so ever.

  • NOTE: you may have to manually enable Java and/or Javascript in Konqueror's Settings menu, it is under configure Konqueror ->Konqueror Browser.
KDE 2.1 Click for Larger
Now for some other hints on how to really get the most out of the new KDE 2.1:
  • read the help, there is tons of it and it is useful

  • in Konqueror if you want a man page type #<program name> in the url line.

  • in Konqueror if you are in file browsing mode: click "View -> Preview -> HTML" and go look in your web directory

  • in ANY application when opening or saving files when in the file open/save dialog in the top url line type: ftp://<username>@<servername>/<path to home directory> you can save/edit/open files right on your ftp server, this is very handy for editing web pages, and btw icon previews work over FTP too, only slower :)

  • drag a sexy image from digital blasphemy (or a ResExcellence desktop) to your desktop, it almost feels like windows for a second ;)

  • if you feel the need to get files off of your windows box and you have Samba working type in the URL line:

    smb://<windows box name>

You will then have the ability copy files off of the box right through the browser.

  • lastly if you need to get a good view of a tar.gz or tar.bz2 file, just click on it. You can drag and drop files right out of the archive.

I hope you enjoyed the tour. These are only a small number of features in KDE 2.1. If you have any questions or interests in KDE 2.1 check out: http://www.kde.org or see us on IRC at irc.openprojects.net in #kde-users. Also if you want to learn more about programming with kioslaves (ie the ldap, smb and tar thing) or want to learn more about how easy it is to develop under KDE 2.1 check out: http://developer.kde.org, http://www.kdevelop.org or see us on IRC at: #kde on openprojects.

  • A red makeover skin for iTunes was created by Anthony Jeancola.

  • Spring is almost in the air, and with spring comes baseball! Deirdre Howarth created a MOSS for her favorite team - the New York Mets. Wouldn't it be great if readers sent in MOSS for all the MLB teams (hint hint). I'll handle the White Sox. :)

  • Jeff Delauney sent another cool splash for AIM. This one looks more like a MacOS 9.1 MOSS!

  • Speaking of MacOS 9.1 MOSS, look at this one by Todd Shultz.

  • Another milpool creation features Albert Einstein. This time it's an About this Mac replacement.

  • If you like the organic look, Mark Sutton created a nice looking wooden MOSS!

As the shadows fall and the moon rises and illuminates the beach on Gilligan's Island, I can only nervously wonder who gets to be shark bait tonight and who will survive. It's going to be a close call, and if I have my druthers, I will stay close to the fire.

Icons - Desktops: We've got three brand new Icon Sets to add to the archives, and six awesome desktops. All on display for today's update.

  • Ilona of Ilicon works her pixel magic once again, and comes up with a new set of "characters". This very cute set of 12 icons will surely bring a smile to your face.

  • Ryan Meek turns his hand to Icon making, and comes up with "Meeker's Icons". This is a set of 10 assorted "this and that" icons to dress up your desktop.

  • Adam Potts, an 18 year old high school senior from Montana creates the "sequel" to his first "Apple Photocons" icon set. "Apple Photocons II" were birthed with ResEdit, Debump, and JPEG View. Adam loves the quality of the OS X icons, so he figured he would try and replicate them for the Classic machines.

  • When Luc offered to make various colored versions of his "iMacdream" desktop on request, he didn't know how many people would be asking. So, in response to the overwhelming demand, Luc has provided us with a full set of this backdrop in Bondi, Sage, Ruby and Graphite. All come in 800x resolution.

  • Our good friend and Dewers aficionado Xochi lends us another of his original desktops for today's update. This one is titled "dent", and comes in 1152x resolution. He also notes that you are welcome to do whatever you wish with his work, but if you happen to make a million dollars selling one, you have to send him a share.

  • If you had a pile of money to spend, would you buy that new shiny Volkswagen Bug, or a dual processor G4? "Users wanted" by Juan Santiago makes a good case for the Mac in 1280x resolution

  • SoulRocka keeps it "Fun n' funky" with his latest desktop creation. This think different ok! backdrop comes in 1024x resolution.

  • Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman will keep that desktop purring along...just don't get scratched! "Catwoman", by Sniper comes in 1024x resolution.

The time seems to be flying by as we enter midweek. I sit here writing my update with my two cats on either side of me. Sherlock and SweetPea. Sherlock by the way was named well before Apple started using the name. This cat versus dog poll is serious stuff. Maybe even more important then the island poll!

SweetPea

ACTION WYSIWYG 1.0.3 is now on store shelves. WYSIWYG "gives you total control of your Font menus, letting you customize the menu the way you like it, grouped the way you want, in a unique multi-column menu." This update fixes a problem that would cause crashing in Adobe Illustrator 9.

Dan Flax turned me onto a new item you may be interested in; KinkyBeepII by Hida. With KinkyBeep, you can manipulate sounds using a synthesizer like control panel to create various effects. It is suitable for making sound effects or system alert sounds. I had wished to play a little more with it, but time was not on my side. The time spent with it, however, produced some very interesting effects. At the very least give it a try.

SpeedApp has been updated to version 2.0.3. SpeedApp will assist you in launching programs by allowing you to type the first few letters of the programs name in a search field. It will then launch the program. A German version of the program is now available. This update includes the following changes:

  • SpeedApp will now recognize it's extension properly.

  • Fixed a bug when closing the list box.

  • Fixed a bug that caused a crash when the trial period was over.

I stopped by the iView Multimedia booth while I was at MacWorld. I wanted to check out their new iView MediaPro program. I was very impressed watching the demo they had set up. This is an ideal program for ResExcellence readers who are looking for a nice, easy to use cataloging tool for images. The program will allow you to store all types of image media. iView MediaPro was just recently updated to version 1.0.2. The following fixes and enhancements were made to it:

  • Increased speed & revised to make it compatible with Epson & HP color inkjets

  • Corrected error when printing CD vertical spines

  • Added option+arrow keystrokes for moving individual keywords and categories within panel list

  • Added support for Adobe InDesign document previews

  • Update decoding for the Olympus ORF format

  • Finalized support for Nikon NEF format to support the 3000x1960 size (not publicly available yet)

  • Applied rendering restrictions for images with width greater than 4095 pixels

James Thomson has posted still more "Happy Valentine Teasers" of the new DragThing. The screenshots are taken while running on 9.1.

Themes and Schemes:

Two Kaleidoscope scheme updates have been posted at Desktopper by Butt_O'sigh. The Aqua inspired Klassik and Sigh have both been bumped up a notch.

Icon/Desktop News 02-14-01 Icon & Desktop News by Dan

In case you forgot, today is Valentines day (guys). A box of chocolates and a few roses will do wonders for the lady of your life. If you choose to ignore this, I have room in the doghouse here for you.

Icons - Desktops: We've got three more excellent Icon Sets, two of them Pixelpalooza contest entries, an Open Transport/PPP CSM makeover kit and 6 awesome desktops. All on display for today's update.

  • Clean, simple and very cool. "Rounded icons" by Mike Kaiser is a set of 18 glassy spheres of all descriptions.

  • Maybe some day "Jake" Tritt will get around to finishing his icon sets. Who knows. In the meantime, enjoy his selection of "Unfinished Sets 2001".

  • "Bdog's OT PPP Makeover" will change the little icons in the “OT/PPP Strip” that appear in the control strip or extensions strip. It will also change the menu item names. ResEdit required.

  • After some arm twisting and a bit of whining, our good friend Xochi sent us a number of his excellent desktops. The first in the batch is called "Nebula " and comes in 1152x resolution.

  • "Graphite on Brushed Metal", by Paul Kuehn, is a handsome Mac-centric backdrop. Visit his website for the download and while you're there, check out the rest of his desktop pictures.

  • "Nastycru desktop" by johnnutz, defies description. To try and get a handle on this one, I visited the associated website, and now I'm even more confused. All I can say is take a look for yourself and decide what it's all about. (please note this site contains materials that may be offensive to some.)

  • If you've never seen a "Barking Gecko," now's your chance." Snapped by Australian photographer Peter McHugh, this luminous creature was "shot" at the White Cliffs Opal fields, and comes in 1024x resolution. A bonus photo of the Rose Breasted Cockatoo is also included.

  • Sad but true, we've come to the final set of desktops on hand by Josh Bishop. "Josh's Desktops" contains two pictures, both featuring the robust G4, in 1152x resolutions.

  • Garrett Walbridge's creative juices just keep on flowing with his latest subject "Pin Burst". As usual, this set comes in several resolutions.

What a great contest we just finished. St. Clair Software and ResExcellence wish to thank all who participated. Congratulations go out to Jennifer Lyng and Thomas Blaschy who correctly answered the contest question. I posted the answer on the contest page, if you are interested. St. Clair will be contacting the winners with their free registration for ScreenCatcher.

No-U-Turn Software has announced that Dot What 1.2 is now available. Many files have some sort of 3 digit extension at the end of the name. Dot What? currently has a database of over 2,000 file extensions to help you identify what the file is and help you open it. There is also a Pre-release version for use with Mac OS X.

MCFont Menu 1.2.1 has been released. MCFont Menu is a Macintosh utility for displaying multiple column font menus. This version includes a fix for the Finder Close-All-Windows-not-working. The author has also updated the "Known Issues" section in the manual.

AWOL Software has posted a public beta of CircumNavigator. CircumNavigator will allow you to use the newer Navigation Services instead of the older standard dialog box in all applications. Currently only a few applications take advantage of Navigation Services. CircumNavigator supports both PowerPC and 68K Macs, and is accelerated for PowerPC.

Perhaps some of you have heard of this before. I never have, and it has just been updated to version 3.0. NoShift Needed 3.0 by Royce K. DeBow will allow you to type special characters found on the keyboard without the need to press the shift key. This would be especially useful if you have some type of limitation of any kind, from a cup of coffee in one hand to a congenital anomaly. You can type:!@#$%^&*( ) instead of 1234567890 without holding the shift key. Download this software and if you would like it added to the Software Archive, please let me know.

Themes and Schemes:

Four new schemes and 9 updated schemes can be found over at the Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive. All four of the new ones are nicely done. I must say that I really like the one called Radarscopes by Dai Furuhata. Black and neon green really make this a cool scheme.

Polling Place

With Apple's free iTunes the number one MP3 Player, how do you think Audion and SoundJam feel? It's a good thing Apple doesn't have a monopoly on the desktop OS, or people may complain they are tying applications to the OS in order to gain entry into other markets. ;)

Since the skinning of iTunes is so limited, I'm surprised by its popularity with ResEx readers. The majority of Desktop Snapshots we receive display Audion and SoundJam.

Chris Petersen was the first of many to spank me for not mentioning SoundApp as an MP3 player, and Unsanity sent me to their web site to download Unsanity Echo, an MP3 player for classic or MacOS X. Checkout both of these and see how they stand up to your current favorite.

I like Cletus, and I must admit I'm surprised by this fact. You see, Cletus is a "Cat Person" while I side with Man's Best Friend. Historically, the two groups don't get along very well. What about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "Are you a Dog or Cat person?"

Both is NOT allowed. Choose your allegiance. It's time for you to make a stand.

They have been working very hard cranking out the betas, and now RealSoftware has released REALbasic 3.0! If you're wondering if REALbasic is easy to use, just take a look at all the applications that have been created so far using it.

The other day, under MacOS X, I described adding fonts to the System/Library/Fonts folder. Rick Roe from Icons.cx wrote to say that's not really the best place to add Systemwide fonts.

"You should put fonts into /Library/Fonts if you want them to be available to all users. /System is *supposed* to be off-limits, thus making backups and restores easier and the system more stable."

Trying to run the newest schemes on an older Mac and Kaleidoscope 2.2? Michael Watson from Bungie.org sends this tip.

With the release of Kaleidoscope 2.3, menus can now have drop shadows. Many scheme makers are creating and updating their schemes to work with the new feature.

Cool, right? Sure, if you're not running an older Mac.

See, while this feature looks nice, it sucks up CPU cycles. On my old 6200, it takes anywhere from 5-8 seconds to draw the Apple Menu. Unacceptable. That isn't very nice, especially when there's no way to turn the shadows off.

Deleting the shadow resources doesn't help either--it still tries to render _something_, it seems, and drags the machine down.

Big deal? Just don't use 2.3, right? Wrong.

These schemes can't open under non-2.3 versions of the CDEV. Well, not without a quick bit of ResEditing. :-)

For all you older Mac users--and I know there are many of you--drop the scheme file on ResEdit, and open the "Colr" resource. Change the minimum Kaleidoscope version to "$20" (no quotes, of course), save and quit.

Bingo, it works in 2.x versions which aren't 2.3.

A couple of handy utilities were created by Dave Giovannini. This are perfect for moving the data fork of a MacOS X file into the resource fork so it can be edited in ResEdit. Some prime candidates are Extras.rsrc or HIToolbox.rsrc. Download them from ResEx and let the author know what additional features you would like to see.
