The built-in Archive Utility provided by Apple, which forms part of Mac OS X, isn’t great. Thankfully, there’s a freeware replacement called The Unarchiver which you can download. This replacement utility is much more capable, designed to handle more formats, and fits in better with the design of the Finder.

It is very simple to use and install – simply copy it into your Applications folder or where ever you prefer, and then set archive filetypes to open using it. This can either be done the usual way, or by double-clicking the icon to show The Unarchiver’s preferences.

I’ve been using this utility for years and I’ve never had any problems with it, it unarchives files really quickly and supports a lot of different archive formats. This is definitely one of the best Mac freebies you can get.

Shady is a free app that allows you to control the brightness of your screen beyond what the default settings allow. On some Macs, the default lowest brightness isn’t as low as we might prefer. Shady puts a shade over your screen to help soothe your tired or dazzled eyes. You can use it to reduce your Mac’s brightness far below the usual minimum, without any risk of damage to your screen.

Modern Macs have exceptionally bright screens, and often the minimum brightness level is still dazzling. If you’re working late at night, or your eyes are tired or maybe you’re just sensitive to bright light, it can be difficult to stare at the screen for long periods. That’s where Shady comes in.

How to Control Mac Screen Brightness

Download Shady, and open it. It sits in your menu bar, and is very simple to use.

Shady lets you pull a virtual shade over your screen (or screens, if you have more than one – Shady covers them all), dimming the display to a more comfortable level. The shade will ignore your mouse clicks, naturally, so you can continue to use your Mac as usual.

Shady Menu

You can brighten the shade all the way up to your normal screen brightness, or darken it down to 90% shade (very nearly black). It’ll change in increments of 5%, and it starts at 40% opacity (or 60% transparency), which should be quite comfortable. Shady will save your shade level and restore it next time you launch the app, and it’ll also automatically get out of your way when it’s launched (returning the focus to whatever app you were in when you launched Shady).

Control Mac Screen Brightness with Shady

Shady doesn’t do anything funky to your system (it’s just a regular application; just quit it and trash it if you don’t want it anymore), and will not damage your screens in any way. It should, however, make your eyes feel better – as long as you don’t make your screen so dark that you’re straining to see anything!

Kuvva is a free wallpaper app and a source for beautiful wallpapers on Mac and iPhone. Kuvva runs silently in the background to refresh your wallpapers automatically. You can refresh wallpapers, discover artists and change your preferences via the menu bar icon. You can choose from the featured artist of the week or the most popular wallpapers via the preferences panel. Users can create an account to build their own collection with their favorite wallpapers to stream. Wallpapers can also be scheduled to display when you want, by day, hour or week.

Kuvva Wallpaper Mac Review

Kuvva has a website which lets you browse through wallpapers. The main area of potential improvement I can see is categories. Currently, Kuvva doesn’t allow you to select a category, so the app will most likely stream wallpapers you dislike to your desktop. Despite this, it is a nice concept, and one that allows people to easily find wallpapers and talented artists that they otherwise might not have. There is also an iPhone app available.

ChimeX Mac OS XApp: ChimeX
Developer: Pariahware, Inc.
Released: May 10, 2012
Requirements: OS X 10.7 or later, 64-bit processor

Those who have been Mac users for a decade or two will remember all the auditory fun that could be had with alert sounds and the clock. You could choose alert sounds to chime (play) on the quarter hours. It was very easy to customize the Mac with more alert sounds, and a company by the name of Clixsounds began providing all sorts of free sounds. This art reached its zenith with Westminster-style sets of sounds having melodies progressing through each quarter hour. Various tunes were used, with a seasonal favorite of mine playing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” Not only clock tower bells, but piano, glockenspiel, and other instruments were used in the sounds.

Apple eventually provided the capability for announcing the time using any of the Mac’s built-in voices, and removed the capability of using alert sounds for the chimes. Voice announcement is trés cool, but what to do if one wants to hear the time without it joining in the conversation?

Enter ChimeX, a modern version of an application that came out a decade ago, which plays clock chimes on the quarter hour. It is available from the Mac App Store. After starting, ChimeX appears as an icon in your menu bar (see Figure 1).

ChimeX Mac OS X

Figure 1

Looking at its preferences, we see ChimeX allows individual selection of a sound to be played (or not) on each quarter hour (see Figure 2). There is also a Bong selection to ring the number of the hour.

ChimeX Mac OS X

Figure 2

Studying the available sound choices, we see that ChimeX offers only one Chime selection. This is a Westminster-style clock bell sound, which progresses through each quarter hour, and is quite nice as far as it goes. The other selections are voices to speak the time, which are not a reason to purchase this application as you, gentle readers, know because that can already be done through the Date & Time System Preferences.

Adding Sounds to ChimeX

ChimeX currently offers no way to add additional sounds. But, as readers of ResExcellence know, we won’t let that get in our way! Let us first see where ChimeX obtains its chime audio. In the Applications folder, where it is installed, control- or right-click on ChimeX, and select Show Package Contents (see Figure 3).

ChimeX Mac OS X

Figure 3

Making our way to Contents->Resources, we discover that five .mp4 files are used for the quarter hour chimes, and the hour count toll (see Figure 4).

ChimeX Mac OS X

Figure 4

So, in order to play a chime sound in ChimeX, we need .mp4 sound files. The original Clixsounds chime sounds were .snd files, which is the format that Mac OS System 7 used. I long ago converted my .snd files to .aiff files, the format used for OS X alerts, using the SystemSound Converter application.

SystemSound Converter is part of the open source SystemSound project. The other part of this project, SystemSound Extension, plays a wide variety of sound file formats independently of iTunes. This is a story for another day.

300 Sound Effects

There are lots of sound effects available on the iTunes Store

Since .aiff files are the format used for OS X alerts, you may already have a number of files in this format. You can easily convert these sound files to .mp4 format by using the free Music Converter application, available from the Mac App Store. You can also purchase albums of sound effects through iTunes, which will already be in .mp4 format.

Once we have a set of .mp4 sound files that we want to use for our chimes, proceed as follows:

  1. Make copies of your sound files, and of the ChimeX application. Always work with copies rather than originals, gentle readers, to prevent inadvertent disasters!
  2. Rename your sound files to the same names as ChimeX expects: chime_15.m4a, chime_30.m4a, chime_45.m4a, chime_60.m4a. Also toll.m4a if you have an hour count sound.
  3. Open the Resources folder in the ChimeX application, following what we did above in Figures 3 and 4.
  4. Copy your renamed sound files into the ChimeX Resources folder, replacing the existing .mp4 files.
  5. Start your modified ChimeX application, and enjoy your custom chimes!

Now that we’ve seen how to do this, it’s time for our first Reader’s Challenge.

Reader’s Challenge

Let the musicians among us create Westminster-style .mp4 chime sound sets, recording themselves playing their tune of choice on their axe of choice. We’ll make the submitted chime sets available on ResExcellence.

Back in the days of Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9, we used ResEdit to edit resource files to modify application resources. Unfortunately, ResEdit was never updated for Mac OS X. This isn’t too much of a problem in itself, because most OS X apps do not use resource files. A few programs have come and gone, but none have ever replaced nor had the same level of functionality as ResEdit did. There are a few apps that still use resource files as container files for other file types, one such app is iTunes. Even the latest version uses a .rsrc file to store most of the PNG images which create its user interface.

ThemePark 3, an application that lets you modify the appearance of OS X, still works on the latest version of Mac OS X (Mountain Lion 10.8) and opens .rsrc files without any problems, allowing you to see the contents and replace them. ThemePark 3 is a little buggy on later versions of OS X, and sometimes it’s necessary to resize the window to force the app to redraw the window contents. ThemePark allows you to open .rsrc files, and send/retrieve the PNG graphics to/from Photoshop for easy editing and replacement of PNG graphics.

CandyBar has long been the easiest way of changing Mac OS X’s default icons for folders, application icons, the Dock, and so on. CandyBar was originally launched in 2002 by The Icon Factory and Panic and soon became a popular tool for replacing icons in Mac OS X. In August 2012, Panic announced that it would not be continuing its development and that it would become an unsupported app. But being as awesome as they are, Panic decided to offer CandyBar for free and distribute the licence code required to register it.

Panic says:

“So where does CandyBar go from here? Well, there’s the other half of the app: the convenient icon organizer, and Quick Drop icon changer, that many of us use often. We’re handing the reins of CandyBar over to our friends at The Iconfactory. They’ve got some thoughts on CandyBar’s future, and where they might take it from here. If you bought CandyBar from us, you will of course be considered if something new shows up. Stay tuned.”

Today, there are a couple of limitations. You can’t change the icons of apps downloaded from the Mac App Store due to code signing. The Dock in Mac OS X 10.8 ‘Mountain Lion’ was changed and also cannot be altered like it used to.

Icon Resources

There are several places to download icon sets for use with CandyBar.

  • InterfaceLift – A popular site which isn’t updated as frequently as it used to be, but it still has a good selection of icons available.
  • The Iconfactory – The people who worked with Panic to create CandyBar, and the famous icon creators that have been around since 1996! I fondly remember using the free icons provided on Macworld magazine discs that were created by The Iconfactory.
  • David Lanham – This guy seems to know what he’s doing when it comes to creating nice icons, and he’s even been interviewed by The Verge, MacThemes, MacUser and Apple Matters.
  • ResExcellence – Ah, of course. How could we almost forget ourselves? Now where did we put those icons? … That’s it, they’re in the Archive! You might have to do some digging though… 🙂

Pacifist has existed for years as the main utility on the Mac for exploring .pkg Installer Packages on Mac OS X and extracting files from them. You can also use it with .dmg disk images, and .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .xar archives. This is particularly useful if an application installed by Mac OS X becomes corrupted or needs replacing for another reason. Rather than reinstalling the entire Mac OS X, you can just replace what you need to – and it’s easy with Pacifist. You can also use it to browse the kernel extensions installed in your system and it lets you see what installer installed them, and whether the installer was made by Apple or a third-party. It’s just $20 shareware and it’s available directly from the developer CharlesSoft.

The interface is easy to use, giving you the option of opening a package, URL, Apple installers or searching installer receipts. I decided to try out browsing the Mac OS X Mountain Lion Installer app which I keep on my boot drive and backup drives (to save myself having to re-download in the future or rely on the Recovery partition or Internet recovery).
