Special Theme Update by Michael Coyle

The release of MacOS X 10.2.3 has caused a small problem for a few applications when a custom theme is installed. If a brushed metal application has the new recessed Aqua widgets, after installing a theme you will not be able to see the widgets. The application will still work, you'll just have to guess where the widgets are!

Look at the image on the right. The first app, iChat, will have problems because after the 10.2.3 update it has the new widgets, but the Quicktime Player and iTunes will be fine because they get their widgets from a different location. Until theme files are updated by their authors, you'll have to decide for yourself if you use any of the affected files.

Update: In this ResEx forum thread, HytestA provides a workaround for the missing widgets in Cocoa apps.

"Download APE manager and Metallifizer. Install as intructed and log out. When you log in again goto System Preferences and select APE Manager. Add the affected applications to the list and DEMETALLIFY them.

This brings back the traffic lights but you lose the metal look. You can then re-theme them via what ever skinning program you use."

Have you stopped by the contest page and entered yet? Please do so. It will provide you with that warm fuzzy feeling to do so. It will also help you to keep the jaggies away by winning the Typeset program when you design your next award winning graphic!

PTH ClockPTHClock has been released at version 2.3. PTHClock is a very simple menu bar clock/calendar program for OS X. It should use very little CPU time and memory. It is the one I use all the time. I love the customization and calendar feature. This version adds automatic update checking (look in Preferences), the application should no longer look like its using a ton of memory and they have fixed a problem with military time not being spoken correctly.

ChimerIcon 0.6.2 is the tool you want when it comes to changing the icons on your browser. It is an AppleScript Studio application that allows you to change Chimera Navigator's icons and splash screen. Changes to this version include:

  • Updated Chimera's new default icons.

  • Added support for Global Extras installation.

  • Option to check version of application and themes.

  • Option to download updated application and themes.

  • Added option to save custom theme.

  • Fixed a potential problem with preference settings.

Nate Cook has release a couple of screensavers for Mac OS X. Life Screensaver and Swarm Screensaver are the names of them. There is an image of both on the homepage for you to check out.

Jérome Foucher has left me know that A-Dock is available. I've just released the first preview of A-Dock for jaguar. Some features are still missing, but the basic functionality is there. Give it a whirl and let him know what you think.

Searchling is a free, quick and unobtrusive way to access your favorite search sites in Mac OS X. It is pretty cool. The description goes on: Once running, Searchling appears as a small icon (the 'G', for Google) in your menu bar alongside your other menulings. Click the icon and a small text field and two pop-up buttons will appear. Enter your search and hit return and poof, you've got results in your favorite web browser. Very simple and very easy to use. Give it a try!

I'm still sick.

I'm so mad at still being sick that, just to spite my illness, I'm going to update anyway! To make you suffer along with me, I'm going to note every sniff and cough that occurs while preparing tonight's update. Misery loves company. <sniff>

As you may remember, I have not installed Linux on my new Powerbook. MacOS X 10.2 has finally provided the stability and speed I need in a memory protected OS. But I still miss KDE.

Thankfully, the Fink Group released an update for MacOS X 10.2 and this update includes KDE 3.1! I would never have thought it possible that I'd see KDE and Aqua running side by side. <sniff> My hat's off to the developers.

<really big honking cough followed by nose blow>

Click the preview for full image.
KDE 3.1 and MacOS X 10.2

Installation is still a little tricky so I'd recommend attempting this only if you have previous experience with Fink, or if you're comfortable satisfying installation dependencies. This are the files I installed, and the order in which I installed them.

Go to this page and download:

4.2.0: XInstall_10.1.sit
4.2.0.1: XFree86_4.2.0.1-10.2.zip
4.2.1.1: XFree86_4.2.1.1.zip

Unfortunately <sniff>, there is no single installer to get you an up to date XFree package that works with 10.2. You need to download the three installers and run them in the order listed above. This will put the XDarwin launch program in your Application folder. Double-clicking it will run XFree with the truly crappy twm window manager. To get more out of the System, you'll need to install Fink.

<ahhh....ahhhhh.....AHHHHHH.... CHOOOOOOO.....>

Download the Fink .0.5 Installer and follow the instructions. You can use the terminal program "dselect", but it maybe easier to use a third part utility called FinkCommander. In either application, scroll through the options selecting the KDE listings and any other programs you wish installed. (I recommend Gimp, XMMS, and KStars!)

Once again Mintar has updated his System 7 styled theme, Gershwix! This time you can choose from six classic appearance colors. Very retro. <cough cough>

Now in six fruity colors.

I'm an avid player of Unreal Tournament and Quake III, but my first love has always been Marathon. Of course I still play using Aleph One under MacOS X, but 2D is soooo Eighties.

That's why I was thrilled to have stumbled upon the Marathon Resurrection mod pack for Unreal! The download weighs 108M, but it was worth every byte. If was fun to play the scenario, but what really makes the mod worth the time are all the classic Marathon Net maps that are included.

<nose blow...>

Resurrection even adds Marathon game styles to Unreal: King of the Hill, Every Man for Himself, and Team Carnage. Damn spanker takes a little too long to reload though!

I spanked them in Thunderdome.

Dan Flax, the ResEx Icon/Desktop Editor, has moved into a new home! <cough, cough, cough> While things are a little hectic for him right now, please feel free to continue uploading contributions via the web page. If you have news annoucements his new email address is d.flax at ispwest dot com.

User Contributed Splash Screens. by Michael Coyle

It's easier than ever to contribute using the new Browser Based Upload Page! If you contribute a file to any section of ResExcellence, you could win a PowerMax gift certificate worth $50 ! (How?)

  • Dude! You gotta checkout this Skull iTunes skin from Andrew Dickman. It's the same one Ozzie uses.

  • <sniff> Elias Sandoval sent a set of three MOSS screens featuring Cubano Guevara.

  • What can you say about a Boot Panel titled MegaOS? It's mean, and it's from Anonymous Prime.

  • Dumbo sent a boot image <cough, chough> of an image from the movie American Pie of Stiffler's Mom.

12-16-02 News Polling Place Icons/Desktops

Today's News by Cletus

Typset IconWe begin this week with the start of a great contest. Typeset Giveaway. Everyone knows what a bother it is to deal with fonts when trying to view them. There are several programs that handle this, but they are so darn expensive, and cumbersome to use. Typeset is the one that I use. Typeset's intended use is to view a collection of installed fonts searching for the perfect font for a particular project or logo. Perfect for the creative minds at ResExcellence. Pop over to the contest page and enter the contest.

MoreClocks 2.5 by Luc Regnault receives its first mention on ResExcellence. It is described as this: More Clocks tells the time with different types of clocks. It has a multi-alarms feature. More Clocks contains a countdown, a perpetual calendar, and a time zones window list. Further functionality is available through the new status bar clock icon in the menubar.

Launch Items X has received an update. This CMM Plugin /launcher program allows you to open virtually anything via a popup menu. Changes include:

  • Accelerate menu-loading engines of Browse Volumes and menu extra.

  • Alias-resolving engines will no longer ask for lost originals.

Those Japanese friends of ResExcellence who picked up on the release of Iconverter mentioned previously, will want to know that a Japanese language localization has been added in the next .86 release.

Kind of a slow weekend with PR coming in and news. Have a good week.

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

Wow! Two-thirds of ResEx readers have a drive larger than 21G. It's easy to understand when applications weigh in at a few hundred megs. For example, my Photoshop folder is over 160M (and I didn't install the example files!). Heck, a standard install of MacOS X is over 2G! I wonder how long it will be before a standard Mac ships with a terrabyte drive!

When shopping this holiday season, it seems as if I'm pulling out a credit card every five minutes. Luckily, I pay them off every month so I don't get buried interest charges. My wallet pales in comparison to my wife's! Because of discounts offered by various retailers, she carries a couple dozen cards! How about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "How many credit cards in your wallet?"
