Today's News by Cletus™  If you have sent an email and it requires a response, be patient as I am backed up. Between the weather, finals week, a death in the family, a business trip, meetings at the college, buying a new house and talking with renovators, lawyers and banks, I have been a bit busy. I promise I will get to everything.
The popular A Better Finder Rename X has been updated. The new version extends the new separate file name and extension processing feature introduced in version 5.0. Very nice program. Give it a try.
PicturePopCM is getting a lot of attention and seems well liked. Several readers have recommended it. It provides a contextual menu to view images.
I know when I need a quick search of the net, I use Google. With shadowGoogle, I can now use the GUI placed on my desktop to search even quicker. Changes in this version add further features: - Added a status bar item option and optional helper button.
- Added the ability to display current search location above search box.
- Added "hide when deactivated" option, plus a cool fade effect option if "hide on deactivate is active."
Everyday Software has posted Bookit X 3.0. This is their excellent unifying browser bookmark program. This very popular program has been updated with several nice features including: - Support for tabbed bookmarks in Mozilla, Netscape and Chimera.
- Revised the Bookit Menu applications menu bar icon.
- Added full support for Opera 6b3 and above.
- The dockling and menu app correctly display HTML escaped characters.
- Bookit now reads the toolbar tag for Mozilla, Netscape, and Chimera to determine the correct personal toolbar folder.
- Several other bug and enhancement features.
DockFun! has been updated to let you run an infinite number of docks under Mac OS X. Now it is possible also to control everything from the status bar menu. The porting of DockFun! from Carbon to Cocoa is now finished and DockFun! is able to use all the power of Jaguar, using a refined graphic that is even more improved, thanks to the capabilities offered by Cocoa.
SwapTop 1.9.1 is the newest version of this desktop picture program that allows scheduled automatic updating. This updated was performed at the request of Webshots. What was done was they removed Daily Download and Image Export features at request of Webshots.
I receive at least one to two emails a week asking about whether there will be a ResEdit program for Mac OS X, or if one exists for Windozes. The answer to both is that there will not be a ResEdit program in the way we know it. There are other programs to aid in editing bits and pieces of both systems, but nothing as comprehensive as ResEdit since the formats for the systems are very different now.

Calendar & Appointment Scheduler for Mac OS X
Today's News by Cletus™  Unsanity has been at it again , this time providing updates to two of their excellent software items. Labels X gets a bump to version 1.1. The update includes:
- Labels X are now compatible with Mac OS X 10.1 as well as Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar".
- File labels are now shown in Dock popup menus containing file listings.
- Labels contextual menu will be disabled for files you do not have correct access privileges for.
- Fixed the issues with mis-coloring of icons in the toolbars, search results, and window proxy icons.
- There are additional fixes and enhancements.
The other update is to Xounds coming in under version 1.4. The list for this one is also long, and a partial listing appears below: - Substantial speed-ups of the code, causing up to 30x performance increases in playing sounds.
- Updated for Application Enhancer 1.2.
- Window dragging sound in Cocoa applications starts playing immediately, just like in Carbon ones.
- Volume mount and unmount sounds are now played again.
- Panning for multi-monitor setups should be calculated more correctly now.
- Fixed a bug with window dragging sound getting 'stuck' sometimes.
Iconeer 1.3.1 has been updated. I have mentioned this program before. Iconeer is a powerful, full featured Mac icon builder. Supports standard icon suite of System 7.x, new icon suite of Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9, as well as new Mac OS X suite. - New Window menu and Image Library window replacing recent images in the Builder window.
- Redesigned Builder and Iconeezer windows.
- Major code enhancements with Improved drag and drop.
- New icons and integrated registration engine.
Sig Software has posted version 2.5.1 of NameCleaner. NameCleaner is an industrial-strength utility for the Mac OS to manipulate file names and types. It is specially designed to help move files to and from foreign file systems such as MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT/2000/XP, NetWare and Unix. Version 2.5.1 is a maintenance release which better handles the report list reaching its size limit and contains several other minor fixes and improvements.
CE Software, Inc. have released CE QuicKeys X 1.5.4. This very popular macro program helps automate tasks, multi-step or repetitive action. The PR states improvements with support for menu selections. A "Show menus while performing menu action" option has also been added to Menu Selection Shortcuts to improve compatibility with more applications.

Today's News by Cletus™ If you're interested in a cool CMM, check out Browse Volumes Lite. It is a CMM plugin that allows you to quickly browse all mounted volumes via a contextual menu. It provides an easy way to open files and folders. The menu will be appear on most applications that support Mac OS X contextual menus. Best of all it is free!
 Glucose Development Corporation have released new versions of WeatherPop and WeatherPop Advance. Both programs allow you to view current weather conditions in your menu bar. Especially nice if you are trapped in a windowless office world. Changes to both the freeware and shareware (Advance) versions included the following:
- Threaded data retrieval resulting in fast searches and fast favorite display.
- Fixed crash related to race condition.
- Fixed sunrise/sunset bug for standard time.
- Work around for "Please contact the administrator" for weather.gov.
- Added new condition mappings for weather.gov.
Tayo has posted R-Rename 2.0. R-Name is a free batch file renaming utility. You simply drag-and-drop files (or folders) onto R-Name and they are automatically renamed based on your settings. You can even preview the changes before actually renaming the files. Very nice and well liked program. Try it out.
You have heard Mike mention his love for this program. POPmonitor is a wonderful program if you are on a dial up connection either all the time or when you travel and temporarily need to use an alternate service. POPmonitor allows you to delete unwanted e-mail from your mailbox without downloading it to your computer first. Version 2.1b4 is the newest version and requires Mac OS 8.1 or later, and CarbonLib for use with Mac OS X. This version adds Apple Mail 1.2 (part of Mac OS X 10.2) to the list of supported e-mail applications. This new version of Apple Mail is fully compatible with POPmonitor's Switch and Receive feature. So if you are using Mac OS X and Mail.app, then you will want to grab this copy and try it out.
 A new winter time screensaver for all you snow lovers ( I am not one) is available. It is called <drum roll>: SnowSaver. It comes under the OpenGL format as a falling snowflake screensaver. At least you do not need to shovel when you want the snow cleared.
Continuing with our winter time theme today, another popular monitor enhancement has been updated called XMas Lights 1.5. Completely rewritten and updated for Jaguar, it fixes a problem where the lights may appear too low or not visible on the monitor.

Polling Place by Michael Coyle  If you haven't been to an Apple Store, it's probably because there isn't one close to home. That's the feedback from last week's poll which showed 60% of readers have visited Apple's flashy retail outlets. If you have never seen one, the most common reasons are that you live in another country, or Apple hasn't plunked down a store in your town - YET!
When I visited the recently opened Oakbrook, Illinois store, while waiting in the checkout line with my wife, she asked if the iMac prices were any good. As we placed out items on the counter, Placing my foot firmly in my mouth, I answered that you could find better prices online - just as the gent in front of me asked for a 17" iMac. Doh! Sorry buddy.
My old Powerbook 140 came with a huge 250M hard disk. I remember being concerned about doing a full install of Marathon which would eat up 30M! My newest Powerbook shipped with a whopping 40G drive! I didn't hesitate to do full installs of both Unreal Tournament and Quake III (300M each!). What about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "How big is yours?"
