Today's News by Cletus Another great contest on tap. We will be giving away two shirts, one of each of the designs pictured on the contest page. Start counting... HexEdit was updated to version 1.7 over the weekend. HexEdit is a hex dump viewer and editor that works similarly to the hex editor provided with Apple's ResEdit. It allows you to edit both the data fork and the resource fork of a file. This version fixes many bugs, and adds many features. In addition, printing now works in both classic and Mac OS X. This version has been tested and works under MacOS X 10.0.1! For the SETI@home crowd, Rémi Zara has released SetiDockling 1.1 for Mac OS X. SetiDockling monitors the work of your Seti@home client in the dock of Mac OS X. This version adds: - Added the display of other information (CPU time, number of work units)
- Indication via the color of the display of the running status of the Seti@home client

It can transfer files via FTP, HTTP, and search the Internet to find the files you want, Download Deputy, which is another Mac FTP client was also recently updated to version 4.0 Download Deputy grabs your downloads while you're surfing and saves them for later. Download Deputy can even download all your files automatically at night when you aren't using your computer. The control strip like launcher WorkStrip 1.0 is now available. This update provides fixes and enhancements I have provided a partial listing below. For a complete list, check the read me file. - When dragging passes over the WorkStrip, it will only shrink once, making it easier to drop things onto WorkStrip.
- Prevented QuickTime Strip CSM from causing problems trying to accept drag items when it is not visible.
- The need to re-register CSM's if the preferences for a module cannot be found in the WorkStrip preferences file has been fixed.
- Fixed bug where WorkStrip would remain visible when viewing full screen movies.
- Fixed positioning of some pop-up menus, so all should now draw in the correct locations.
- Fixed bug where the list of file and folder types handled by the Finder was being incorrectly created.

Almost two-thirds of you are enjoying the larger icons of MacOS X. Roughly 10% primarily view them at the largest setting. I tend to use mostly 32x32 unless a folder has only a few items, then I'll kick them up to 128x128.
It has been about a month since the release of MacOS X, so this week the Polling Place asks, "What is the most recent OS installed on your main Mac?"

Here's an easy tutorial from MacInstruct on how to add Startup and Shutdown sounds. It covers sound format conversion too.
Several readers have written to ask what had happened to MacOS Rumors. it appears they has problems with their ISP and until it's all sorted out, you can find them at: http://199.105.116.91/MOSR/
Fontosaurus Text, the most productive small font foundry on the web, is back at it with two new freely-downloadable fonts for this week: Whackbats, the site's first dingbats set; and Quickie, one of the first fonts designed by this lovely little one-man show.
The pickle has updated his ResEdit mod to change the way Internet Explorer identifies itself to the web server (The User-Agent header).
This user-agent header is used by many servers to identify your browser version and platform and to subsequently direct you to a platform- or browser-specific page. For example, c|net uses the user-agent header when you click on the Downloads link from the home page to direct you to a Mac or PC download page. The so-called "requirements" that some web sites claim are often excessive and the page will work just fine on a browser that the server claims is too old. (Online banks are some of the worst offenders, and often claim they won't work with IE 5 for the Mac because IE 5 reports as Netscape 4.)
The ResExcellence also server uses the user-agent to track which browser you're using. Currently, 70% of ResEx readers use Internet Explorer, 25% for Netscape, followed by Opera and iCab with a few percent each.
An Overwhelmingly Trite Review For The Masses by Jack Shedd
MacOS X is remarkable. It is perhaps the first Operating System yet to strive to act as complete user environment, and in fact, the first operating system released to date to where I felt the engineers were more intelligent then my grandmother after a few classes on object-oriented programming at the local community college. Today's News by Cletus This week just flew by for me. I wonder if that is just another way of saying it was an extremely busy week for me? The weekend cometh and I will be golfing! :) Besides simply copying them from one file to another, Agent Audio can save them individually as System 7 sound files for easy playback in the Finder. | Our resident Software Reviewer, Jeremy Hoesly has posted a great review of Agent Audio by Clixsounds. "Sounds enhance the interaction a user has with a program. Buttons click, sliders provide audio feedback, and panels swish and pop as they are hidden and revealed. Others, such as email and chat programs, cue the user to certain events as they occur, and games, getting still more elaborate, chirp, whistle, roar, and blast in response to gameplay." continued... iCab was recently released as version 2.5b2. As an alternative browser, iCab gets high marks for a small foot print on memory and its speed. This update offers a lengthy list of "under the hood" changes as well as these ornamental features: - The color of the tool bars can be now selected using the color picker (View > Toolbar color).
- iCab now supports the passive mode for FTP.
- In the "View" menu it is now possible to switch on/off JavaScript.
TaskMenuBar 2.4.1 is an update to this menu bar launcher. This program is always popular amongst its users. New in this version are the following: - All control strip modules are now compatible with the OS-9 multiple users mode
- Double click problems with ActionMenus fixed
- FinderPop's "Clicking unused menu bar area" feature works more reliably
- Far right icon won't be erased by the menu bar clock, even if it is a control strip module

Wanna have some fun under LinuxPPC? The Super Nintendo emulator, SNEX, now runs on your Mac under Linux.
If feels great to play Contra again! If you have joystick support compiled into your kernel, plug in a Gravis Gamepad and fire away!
Download the file and install it with the command:
tar xvfz s9x.linux.137ca.ppc.tar.gz
This creates a folder in your home directory called /snes9x. Stick your ROM files in there in a folder cleverly called /roms.
The trickiest part is programming the keys on your gamepad or joystick. I have already done these two for you:
| Gamepad/Joystick |
Key assignments |
|
Gravis Gamepad
|
2 1 3 0 4 5 9 8 |
|
Macally iShock
|
0 1 6 7 4 12 8 9 |
For example, if I want to play Contra with my Gamepad from the command line I enter:
snes9x -ts -joymap1 2 1 3 0 4 5 9 8 /home/root/snes/rom/Contra.smc
That's a lot of typing just to kill a few aliens, so I wrapped each command line in a shell script in order to make a double-click script:
#!/bin/bash
snes9x -ts -joymap1 2 1 3 0 4 5 9 8 /home/root/snes/rom/Contra.smc
Just change the rom name and save a bunch of these in a folder to launch your games. If anyone else decodes a joystick, send me the numbers and it's post them.
Caurii askes, " I just tried the icon replacement in Mac OS X in the article "How to Change the New Icons in MacOS X." However, I cannot find the "HIToolbox.rscr" file, nor even the 'HIToolbox.framework'. I have the latest build of Mac OS X installed, and I'm sure I looked in the correct directory (OS X:system:Library:frameworks) what did I do wrong?"
Not at all, Apple moved the file and I hadn't noticed, but Hes Nikke did. The HIToolbox.rscr file is stored in this directory:
Mac OS X/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framwork/Versions/A
/Frameworks.HIToolbox.framework/Versions/A/Resources/HIToolbox.rsrc
Heck, instead of trying to figure out that long list of mumbo-jumbo, just open Sherlock and search for HIToolbox.rsrc.
Daniel Shockley sent this quick tip on how to make the default window that OmniWeb open larger.
I found that the small size of the default browser window was very annoying, especially since I use large fonts to making reading easier. Anyway, here's the way to do it:
- Make sure you've installed the Developer Tools from Developer CD that came with Mac OS X.
- Control-Click on the OmniWeb application and choose "Show Package Contents"
- Open the Contents folder, then the Resources folder, then the English.lproj folder.
- Double-click on the WebBrowser.nib file (should be near bottom of English.lproj window) It should open with Interface Builder from the Developer Tools.
- Resize BOTH the window itself, and the darker gray box inside the window, to the size you want your default web browser window to be. Save it, and quit Interface Builder.
- That's it!
Interface Builder will automatically save a copy of the original WebBrowser.nib file in the English.lprof with a tilde (~) at the end of the name. Should you ever want to revert to the original, throw out your new file and remove the tilde from the backup original's name.
Updated 6:30 a.m. Opps. Chris Fournier adds, "Sheesh! You really got to check the menus before you go about an ordeal like that. All one needs to do to make the default window size larger is make the window the desired size, then select "Save Window Size" from the "Browser" menu. It's that simple! "
But Chris, it's a learning experience. :)

Icon/Desktop News 04-27-01 Icon & Desktop News: by Dan I often wish there was an "economical" way to create larger previews for the all the desktop submissions that come my way. 120x90 pixels is sort of puny and makes it tough at times to get the full flavor of any picture you're considering for your desktop. Anything larger that that would clog our server, and make you fall asleep waiting for the images to load. The only practical solution to this problem I can see is for you to take a chance and download ALL of them and then decide what's what! Icons - Desktops: Ready for the weekend? We've got (1) brand new OSX Icon Set and (8) really excellent Desktops to spice it up. All on display for today's update. - Got "Moo Folders Icons" for OSX by Sacha Quester-Semeon? If not, download the entire set of 8 and then visit his website to snag the matching desktop of your favorite color and resolution.

- Schack Lindemann continues to hone his movie making skills with his latest Quicktime "Startup Movie". Just drop this beauty into your Startup Items folder located in the System Folder and restart. The next time you boot you will be treated to Schack's handiwork in stereo.
- Andrew Douch took this awesome photo of "Sunrise at Lake Tyers" Beach, looking over Lake Tyers toward the ninety-mile Beach in Gipplsland, Victoria, Australia. This beautiful photo comes in 1024x resolution.
- This abstract blurb lends itself to somewhat of an aqua cruiser to arch enemy Vader in "Darth Waters". Author Bradford J. Wiles admits that you might have to stretch your imagination a bit to see it that way, but what the heck. This three-d desktop composition comes in 800x and 1024x resolutions.
- "Xstar" by Manny Velazquez is another of his beautiful desktop creations from the inspiring "Metaphysical" series. A visit to his website reveals these backdrops to be expressions of Manny's own personal view on spirituality, and is well worth the read for those who want to take a deeper look. This one comes in 1024x resolution.
- Let your mind wander to digital paradise with "Forbidden Islands" by Paul B. Kotylo. This is a 5 picture 3-D set of Bryce generated islands. All of these desktops come in 1152x resolution.
- S W Dickson had in my mind to create a funky version of the 'Abstract' pictures you get with Mac OS X, but couldn't quite get the 'edge' he was looking for. He added the picture of "Gorillaz" as the album has been playing pretty much constantly in iTunes since he got it . This one comes in 800x and 1024x resolutions.

I have received dozens of positive emails regarding the recent editorial on Themes and MacOS X. Thanks to everyone who emailed Apple's attorneys and then took the time to snail-mailed letters to Apple.
Tom Hackett was the first to let me know that the URL provided for feedback to Apple may not have been the best possible site. Is seems there is a feedback page for MacOS X issues. If you have an archived copy of your earlier message to Apple and their lawyers, you may want to send it again to the new feedback page, just to make sure it goes to the correct authority.
Some readers have called for an organized shareholder action, but as a shareholder who has seen Apple's proxy voting system, the likely hood of getting a contrary opinion on the agenda are slim to none.
To be honest, I don't believe public opinion will do much good either. Apple is firmly under the control of one man with a strong will. We would have more success against Proctor & Gamble, a large corporation that cares more about what consumers think. What I have learned is that there is broad support in the Mac community to challenge Apple on this point.
There are options. After spending many years in the recording business, I have come to know several copyright/trademark lawyers. I hope to informally poll them on the chances of successfully challenging Apple in the areas of theme creation and reverse engineering. It would also be necessary to get an estimate of how high the legal fees could be. If these lawyers feel there is a reasonable chance of success, we will just have to wait for the proper conditions.
If a theme is submitted to ResExcellence that I feel does not violate any Apple trademarks, I will post it. If challenged by Apple legal on the grounds of reverse engineering, then ResExcellence will open a Kagi shareware account to raise money for a legal challenge. So far, almost 10,000 people have read the editorial. If only half of you have the conviction to send $5 to a Theme Defense Fund, that's $25,000. To be honest, I don't know if that's enough to go up against Apple, but I will do my best to find out.
This is not something that would be enjoyable, but as I have said, I believe the way Apple and their law firm have been theatening artists and developers is just plain wrong. I will keep you updated as the situation unfolds.
Many readers have been asking for an archive of the old Polling Place results. I was surprised that there were results going all the way back to October of 1998! It's quite a trip down memory lane. Enjoy.
For those of you with Photoshop 6, Ryan has created an Action to aid in the creation of MacOS X Dock Poofs. Ryan says:
Here are a couple of Photoshop actions that help create/deconstruct the poof.pdf animation for Mac OS X Dock.app. The animation consists of 10 128x128 images (rendered top to bottom) in a single layer: 5 content 'blocks' on the left, and 5 alpha masks on the right. So far, I think they've gotta be greyscale or b/w. (They'll still work if they're color, but will appear grayscale...)
The action 'Layers to poof.pdf' requires 10 layers, 128x128. For the action to work, the layers need to be named 'Layer 1-5' (ex. Layer 2, Layer 3) and 'Layer 1-5 mask' (ex. Layer 2 mask, Layer 3 mask). The 5 content layers end up on the left, and the 5 alpha masks on the right. Black is transparent, and greyscales get more opaque as they head towards white.) You will end up with a save as... dialog box prompting you where you'd like to save the final pdf.
More instructions are included, so download it and play around, then send your Poofs to ResEx!
Want to add custom icons to your drives under MacOS X? Matt Busfield heard about this tip.
I was rather disappointed to learn that using the terminal to assign custom icons in place of default ones under OS X resulted in *all* my hard drives/partitions having the same icon.
Are people aware of the fact that hard drives and their various partitions can be given unique icons? A clever chap (jcpowers) who responded to a message I left on a forum advised me that I could do this:
- First turn off the option to have hard drive icons appearing on the desktop (Finder Preferences).
- Next, make aliases of the hard drives (drag to the desktop while holding Option-Command).
- Paste the desired icon into the alias' Inspector window.
The new icon doesn't appear on the alias until the Finder is forced to quit. Different drive icons can now be dropped in the dock too.
It seems silly to me that it's this difficult to change the icon, and Michael Beedle agrees. In fact, he has put together a page outlining his gripes with MacOS X.

ResExcellence Editorial: I'm Furious at Apple by Michael Coyle
| Among other things, the court may require your company to pay damages of up to $150,000.00 per infringement. - Letter from Apple Legal |
Several months ago when Michael Rabe approached me about setting up an Appearance Theme archive at ResExcellence, I had several concerns that needed to be addressed. Everyone knows Apple's law firm (Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn, PLLC) diligently pursues any trademark infringements regarding themes. I didn't want this archive to have any of the so-called banned themes (HiTech, Gizmo, Drawing Board, Aqua, etc.).
Would themes die with MacOS X? Michael assured me themes were very likely under the newest Apple OS and sent me a work in progress, his recently released Pastel Blue 10. I opened this theme file in ResEdit and confirmed that every resource was unique and there were no elements of Aqua remaining. I was confident that it was an entirely original work that would not infringe on Apple's trademarks. (Continued...)
Today's News by Cletus Congratulations to the final two winners of the DragThing Contest, Robert Evans and Doug Korns. They correctly answered the question: "How many different ways can you sort the process dock in DragThing 4?" The answer is 8 total ways: - by Launch Time (forward or reverse)
- by Name (forward or reverse)
- by Kind (forward or reverse)
- by Most Recently Used (forward or reverse)
ResExcellence and James Thomson would like to thatnk all those who participated in the contest. There will be no contest this week, but there are many more lined up in the upcoming weeks. Quiet weekend overall for Classic system updates. Maybe everyone is carbonizing? Let's jump into the Mac OS X updates right away then. RAILhead Design released PasswordMaster 1.0b3 on Saturday. "Easily store and organize all your software serial numbers and registration codes as well as create 12-character alpha-numeric passwords based on your data input. OS X and OS 9 savvy." There were two Volume Docklings updated over the weekend. DVolume 1.1 by Stas Pietrucha allows you to set the System Volume and the Alert Volume from the Dock. Volume Dockling 1.2.0 by On-Core, Inc. allows you to quickly and easily adjust the system volume directly from the dock. Look at both and pick the one that suits your needs the best. illumineX Screen Saver Pack 1.0.2 is a freeware set of screen savers. "Original screensavers including BabelBloX, based on the upcoming arcade game, as well as updated implementations of classic screensavers like Warp, Spline, and Planets. All screensavers offer tunable options." - Updated implementations of classic screen savers including Warp, Planets, Spline and others
. - Active screensavers@illumineX.com link in Configure panel for email feedback
- These Screen Savers are written in Objective C, using Cocoa.
- One ultra-classic saver, Fireworks, not because it's cool, but because it amuses us. We hope it amuses you, too.
MenuStrip 1.6 has been updated. MenuStrip is a multi-purpose utility for Mac OS X that allows quick access to frequently used settings, such as the computer volume, monitor resolution, and color depth, right from the OS X menu bar. This version fixes a few bugs with resolution switching and provides for a 10 day nag-free trial period. Are you superstitious? If so, you may want to give EightBall 1.1 for Mac OS X a shot. A similar product exists for Classic in the form of a CSM and is probably still available here. This happens to sit in the Dock as a "dockling." I refer to it often before a round of golf and without fail it has predicted how I will do. Submit Software and General News Suggestions!

Some of you are so mean! You would begrudge me a little time of from my duties at ResExcellence! :)
I wish I could say I was well rested, but as anyone with two kids knows, you're never well rested.
With MacOS X you have a wide range of sizes for icons. This week's Polling Place asks, "What size are most of your icons under MacOS X?"
Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle
Melissa has done again. She has posted six more sites in the ResExcellence Links archive for you to explore.
The latest version of Snoop has expired and company has disappeared. What other tools are there for swapping the resource and data forks in MacOS X? Ryan Schwartz recommends QuickConvert. It's the easiest utility yet to do the job.
Fontosaurus Text has released two new fonts for Macintosh and PC!. Enibrut, a dumbed-down and backward version of Turbine Sans, and Uhop Deluxe which includes a full character set, and bold, italic, and bold italic faces. Watch for more fonts later this week and maybe a new desktop wallpaper and conversion of the BePeople icons to Windows (*gag*) format.
