Set a Background Image in Stickies

After Danny Semaya sent us the tip about the BDat resource in Stickies, I had been trying to think of a useful implementation, and I believe I have found it! This simple edit will let you place a monthly calendar in a Stickies window.

First, let's recap Danny's original post...

I found this really cool thing with Stickies. We all know that in Stickies if you type "Antler!" and press return you see the picture of the moose with the credits. This picture makes a very nice watermark or background look on stickies, so wouldn't it be nice to have your own? Its not a PICT resource, so at first glance it would seem impossible to change this picture, but its actually pretty easy.

Using Resedit, open up the BDat resources and open ID 129. Copy this entire resource in the hex editor. Next create a new PICT resource. Open the resource using the hex editor and paste the data in. SURPRISE! The BDat resource is a PICT resource in disguise! So now you can pretty much paste in any picture you want, for me it worked nicely with the red car picture in the scrapbook so I would assume that color is not a problem (it converts it to gray anyway.)

Fortunately, ResExcellence editor, Jeremy Hoesly created an RMAP resource that allows the BDat resource to use the PICT editor, so viewing ID 129 is easy.

To install the new RMAP, open a copy of the ResEdit preferences (in the System's Preference folder). Copy the RMAP from the new file and paste it into the preferences. If prompted by a dialog box, you want the new resource to have a unique ID number.

Save the preferences and quit ResEdit. Replace the old preferences with the new one and the RMAP will be ready to work!

While the RMAP is not needed to complete the edit, it will allow you to see the resources if you want to double-check.

Download the three months that I made. (If you find this edit useful, you're on your own after July!)

Open them in ResEdit.

If you have the RMAP installed, you can double-click the three ID numbers to view the month's calendar.

Next, open a copy of Stickies.

Find the BDat resources and open them with a double-click.

Delete BDat ID 129 from Stickies.

Copy ID 140 for the calendar file and paste it into Stickies. From the Resource menu, select Get Info on ID 140 and change its number to 129.

Save you work and quit ResEdit. Launch the modified Stickies, create a new note, and type "Antler!" to see the month of May.

One you have triggered the calendar, you can delete the phrase Antler! and type reminders for yourself at the bottom of the note!
