I'm opening up the ResExcellence Mailbag!
I thought I'd use this week's update to share with you the answers to mail I've received.
Chris Grantham writes:
Heya man...you got a hack for making "New Window With This Link" the default in Netscape instead of "Open This Link"?
Sure Dude. Only it can't be done with ReEdit so I can't easily show you how to do it, but I do have a copy of the modified MENU resource here. Open the modified resource with ResEdit and paste it into Netscape's MENU definition (selecting Yes, you do want to replace an existing resource) and you'll be all set.
Yuko Ogura asks:
I have just installed OS8 and I do not know how to change my waste basket icon any more. I do have the graphic (which is a frog) and all I need to know is how I could do it.....
Almost all of the System icons are now stored in the Appearance Extension. The empty/full icons are ID# -3993 an -3984. Paste your new frogs into these locations in resources ICN#, icl4, icl8, ics#, ics4, and ics8.
Be sure to work on a copy of the Appearance Extension, or you'll be "Knee-Deep" in trouble (frogs, knee-deep - get it!).
Tom Rowland wondered:
I run an international English version of OS8. How can I rename the Wastebasket to Trash?
Tom, no promises on this hack, since I don't have an international system to try it on, but open a copy of the Finder with ResEdit and checkout STR# ID#=129. In my US version of the Finder, item number 5 is the Trash. If yours is Wastebasket, try changing it.
Personally, I like the international sound of Wastebasket, and will be changing my Trash accordingly. :)
Aaron Chang queries:
As many long time Mac fanatics, I hate "About this Computer..." As a proud owner of an Apple PowerMac 7500, I was able to successfully edit the 7.6 Finder to say "About Aaron's Mac". Looks like OS8 hides this somewhere else. Any idea where?
That's funny, my Powerbook already says, "About Aaron's Mac...".
Maybe you'd like change yours to say, "About Michael's Mac...". Maybe not. :)

No matter what you want your Mac to be About, you can find the string to change in the Finder, resource STR# ID 4000. Item number 6 is "About This", and item number 7 is "Computer". As you see in the example above, I deleated the word This from #6 and changed #7 to Michael's Mac. Works like a charm.
