Add command keys to the Finder in MacOS 8.5

Things have moved around alittle since version 8.1. If you haven't already, you need to install the fmn2 template to make editing the resources easier.

Intructions to install the template:

After downloading the template, open the ResEdit preferences file in ResEdit (you can find it in the System Folder-->Preferences). Open the new template file in ResEdit and select all the resources with Command-A.

Paste these resources into the ResEdit Preferences file with Command-C. You may get a dialog asking how to handle duplicate ID numbers - select the Unique button.

Save the preferences and quit ResEdit. The next time you launch the program, the template will be ready to use!

Open a copy of the Finder in ResEdit and find the fmn2 resources.

Open them with a double-click.

To make it easier, I've added the menu names to the resource ID's.

Open ID #522 with a double click.

When the fmn2 resource for the
File menu is opened using the template, it's much easier
to understand what is happening.

Count: the count is the number of
items in the menu, including the
menu name (File), and any
dividers.

MenuItem: The name of the menu
as it appears in the bar.

ShortCut: is the command key
equivalent for the menu item.

MenuItem: The name of the menu
item as it appears in the dropped
down menu.

In this example, I added Command-T to Empty Trash.

After modifying any command key and menu names, save your work and quit ResEdit.

Replace the old Finder and Restart the computer. The new commands will be ready to go!
