| Create New Sound Sets for Outlook Express 5.0
This tip was submitted by Mark Thalman.
Where are the sounds? Originally, the default Microsoft Sound Set is in theOutlook Express 5.0 folder in a subfolder called Sound Sets, but OE5 is very MacOS 9 savy, and if you are running that version of the OS, you may have to look for this folder: Documents ---> Microsoft User Data ---> Sound Sets, to make sure you put your new or modifies sets into the corect place.
OE5 plays five sounds that are stored as standard System 7 type sound file resources. Open ResEdit and from the File menu, select New.
Into this empty window, paste your new sound files.
From the Resource Menu, select the Get Info command to change the sound resources ID number to match the appropriate action. The name is irrelavent, but can be helpful.

Once you have the correct ID's on your five sounds, from the File menu, select Get Info to change the Type/Creator code.

Change the codes to SndS/MSNM. Save your work and Quit resEdit. Place your sound file in the appropriate folder and launch Outlook Express 5.0.

From the Edit menu, select Preferences, then the Notification tab to select your new sound set.
As an example, download my quickie Star Trek Sound set.
