Add Smileys to AOL's Instant Messenger.

Have you often wished you had more icon choices when viewing smileys in AIM? This edit will allow you to add icons for any contortion you can bend your face into!

After installing the icons, you will see the effect immediately, but your Mac using friends won't until they install the icons too!

Have Windows users on your Buddy list? Sorry, tell them to get a Mac!

The icons on the left have already been prepared for you in a ResEdit file you can download. To use the prepared file, follow these instructions:

Open a copy of AIM and the new icons from ResExcellence in ResEdit. Select all of the new icons and copy them to the clipboard. Select the AIM resource window and Paste from the clipboard. When the dialog window appears, select Yes to replace existing resources.

Save AIM and quit ResEdit. The new copy will display the following smileys:

  • :P = icon 1803
  • :O = icon 1804
  • :D = icon 1805

If you would like to create your own icons, you will need to make mini-icons (icm8) for you faces. You can do this with ResEdit after reading: How to Edit Mini-Icons with ResEdit.

Start your icon ID's at 1803 and continue upward.

Once you have completed your icons and pasted them into a copy of AIM, open the Smly resources.

There is only one ID, number 1000. Open it with a double-click.

Thanks to Jeremy Hoesly, you can download his ResEdit template for AIM's smly resource. (New template for version 3.5.897)

Paste it into your ResEit preferences and relaunch ResEdit to make it active.

To add an entry, click on the last number with stars after it in the list. From the Resource menu, select Insert New Fields. Add a smiley and an icon number for each new picture.

Sound tricky? Just follow the format of the existing smileys and you should be OK.

While I didn't have to, I followed the format that AOL used of creating two smile versions for each ID: with and without the 'nose'!

:-)
: )

It was easy to create this by copy/pasting the originals. Just start one character before the ASCII smile, and continue to the next character before an ASCII smile.

When you're finished, save your work and quit ResEdit. Launch your new version of AOL AIM and IM a friend to see your new icons.!
