Replace the alert sounds in ICQ
The hottest instant messaging program right now is ICQ. Michael Reynolds sent in this tip on how to changing the two annoying alert sounds.

Open a copy of ICQ in ResEdit and scroll down to the snd resource.
Open them with a double-click.
These are the two sounds we will replace.
Note their ID's are 500 & 501
I chose some beeps I found in the sound section of info-mac as replacements
They are stardard System 7 sound files that the System uses for alerts. Using the Sound control panel, you can create your own, or even record a moment of silence so ICQ won't make a sound!
Open your choices for replacement sounds in ResEdit. You now have three files opened: ICQ and two sound files.

In this example, I opened the snd resource of my first replacement file, and selected the ID. Copy the ID to the clipboard and past it into the snd resources of ICQ.
Repeat this for the other replacement sound.
You should now have four ID's in ICQ, looking similar to the graphic on the left.
You can now delete the originals, ID# 500, and 501.

On the two remaining new sound resources, select the menu item, Get Info and change their ID's to 500 and 501.

When you're finished, the resources should look similar to the graphic pictured on the left.
The two original sounds have now been replaced by new sound files with the same ID numbers.
Save you work and quit ResEdit. You new copy of ICQ will now have the replacement sounds! |
