Add Quicken Command Keys

Quicken is one of the few applications I use daily. I started way back with version 5 and just updated to Quicken 98.

I pay my bills online using CheckFree, and I'm always annoyed at how buried the menu options are for "Send Payments" and the list of "Online Payees". So this week, we'll add command key equivalents for those two options, and as an added bonus, I'll show you how to use the beautiful Quicken Backdrop patterns in Apple's Desktop Pictures.

Quicken 98 or Quicken 7

Start by opening a copy of Quicken in ResEdit, and scroll around until you find the MENU resources.

Open them with a double-click.

Resource ID# 33

IQuicken 98, the menu commands for online banking are located in ID #33, theTransmit menu option.

This maybe different in Quicken 7. The key is to look for the menu that looks similar to the one shown.

Once you find it, open it with a double click.

Click on the menu choice "Send Payments", and enter your choice for the command key in the box I've highlighted. Be sure to pick a letter that is not being used by any other Quicken menu choice. While unorthodox, I chose "S" for Send, even though it usually means Save.

Now click on "Online Payees" and enter your choice for the command key as shown in the graphic below.

When you're finished, close ID#33 and the MENU resouces.

At this point, using my examples, Quicken has been modified so Command-O will open the window of Online Payees, and Command-S will transmit any new transactions to CheckFree.

Now let's take a look at the backdrop patterns...

The backdrops that Quicken 98 uses are subtle patterns stored in the ppat resources.

Find them, and open them with a double-click.

Each pattern is stored in an ID number. Click once on an ID and copy it to the clipboard.

Next, open the Desktop Pictures control panel and paste the pattern into it.

Repeat this for each ID number, and as you paste them into Desktop Pictures, the patterns will be visible (as shown in the graphic below). These patterns are also great for use in Window Monkey.
