I have some preliminary results on the use of ext2fsx, an open source driver that allows the mounting of Linux drives under MacOS X. The package was just updated to version 1.0d4 and is the first to provide read/write capability to ext2 partitions. Also provided are the standard Linux disk utilities (fsck, mke2fs, dumpe2fs, etc. ).

An unexpected feature of the driver is its level of MacOS X integration. For example, as shown in the images below, both Disk Copy and Disk Utility have options for creating Linux disk images and formatting drives as ext2.

Ext2 option in Apple's Disk Utility

Ext2 option in Apple's Disk Copy

These new options were tested on external SCSI hard drives and even a 2G Jazz cartridge without problems. Remember, it's still in early development, but the driver seems to be progressing nicely. Frankly, I don't understand why Apple hasn't provided this type of driver with the OS.

On a related note, to mount an external SCSI Jazz and SCSI hard disk on my Firewire Powerbook, I used the Belkin SCSI to Firewire adapter. One reader wrote to say he had problems with this device, but I found it performed perfectly. It was Plug-and-Play. Under MacOS X a software driver install was not required.

After a long beta period, Microtek has released final MacOS X drivers for most of their scanners. I have a 4800, and while the beta version of ScanWizard 5 worked great, it's nice to have final versions in hand!

If you use Microsoft Word X to save documents as HTML, you have noticed special characters are not properly converted to web equivalents. For example “ ” displays as Ò Ó and ‘ ’ displays as Ô Õ. (In fairness to MS, may applications err in this matter).

The solution is to use Joe Szedula's HTML Cleaner Applescript. It contain a complete list (more than 100) of all the "special" characters that need to be encoded

Are you still waiting to make the move to MacOS X? Listen to this story.

My twelve-year old son loves the Simpsons. Today ResEx posts three nice Simpson boot panels and I thought Mike would like one on his Pismo Powerbook. Surprisingly, he said no. It seems he seldom restarts his Powerbook and would never see the image.

I was sceptical, so I checked the 'uptime' and couldn't believe it was over 12 days! This is on a laptop computer in the hands of a Junior High School kid! He runs Sims Unleased 24/7, and puts the computer is put to sleep so often you'd think it had narcolepsy.

The fact that it hasn't crashed in almost two weeks is a testament to how robust MacOS X is!

  • Guess how many new Mighty Mouse Cursors I posted today. Give up? Five.

  • To match the Homeland Security Threat color codes, Adam Rice created new email badges for Apple's Mail application. A new-message count up to 99 will appear in blue; 100-999 will appear in green, 1000-9999 in orange, and beyond that, the original you're-in-trouble red!

  • Better late than never! In plenty of time for next years St. Patricks Day, James Badger created a four-leaf clover boot panel.

  • Featuring the Chevy Camino, Dave Rosen whipped up this splash screen for the Camino web browser. It's hard to see in the preview, but the cars hood ornament is the Navigator's Compass Point.

  • My son just purchased a tutorial on how to draw the Simpsons characters. That's why he's gonna love this series of three Boot Panels by Stefan Nielsen featuring Springfields First Family.

Let's pick on the Dock today. Lots of updates concerning the Dock.

Dock Death 1.0. Oh it sounds nasty, but actually will assist you in quickly killing or restoring the Dock. It uses an AppleScript to execute this. The one part that remains nasty is the note from the editor: Please use at your own risk, as this script can potentially mess up your system.

Also from the same company— NoName Scriptware, comes another AppleScript to work with the Dock. Dock Toggler is an AppleScript that toggles your Dock's visibility on/off. This may be a bit safer.

Ugly Dockling 1.3 continues the Dock day of updates. BKeeney Software, Inc. describes Ugly Dockling as a dock organizer reminiscent of the Favorites menu in OS 9 and earlier. A simple contextual menu in the Finder adds applications, documents, folders and even drives to the Ugly Dockling menu. No need to go to the Preference Pane to add and organize your menu items: go to the Finder and add folders and other alias' so that your Ugly Dockling menu is organized exactly the way you want it. This update adds new icons.

EarthDesk 1.2.6 is the popular program providing an ever changing image of the Earth. It has correct imaging of day and night throughout the world. This update includes fixes for non-English OS X and online help.

Northern Softworks has posted an update to Renicer 1.2. They state that version 1.2.2 improves application performance. Users should notice dramatic improvement in launch times and preference handling. Application menus in the preference window have been fixed. This program allows you to assign priorities to processes of the Unix portion of Mac OS X with the Renice command.

Macaroni 1.3.4 adds a "self-repair" capability to recover from files that get corrupted. Also reduced download size from 1.2MB to 573kB. Macaroni is a tool which handles regular maintenance for Mac OS X's Unix core. Normally these tasks run on a regular schedule, in the middle of the night.

The Theme Archive has been given a cleaning. There are two pages of themes updated for use with MacOS X 10.2.4. If your theme has been omitted, please email me.

A new theme has been added! Check out FT-700 by Daisuke Yamashita. A nice grey theme without any metallic elements. See the preview below.

Click for a larger image.

The maker of some of the most popular themes at ResEx, Kevin Husted, has gone Safari Crazy! He has made Safari button skins that match the following themes: SimpleX, Pearl, NeXT, SSChosenOS and TuXedo. Watch for upcoming releases of BeOSX and Cappuccino. Grab them all at his site.

Andreas Herbst sent some interesting news for owners of the new Powerbooks.

"I just recently bought a 12" PowerBook and I spent some time trying to figure out how to implement the "One Button Booting..." solution to boot any OS from any partition on this computer. The error message I kept getting from Open Firmware was "Bootinfo is not compatible".

I finally figured out that one has to include "MacRISC3" in addition to MacRISC in the <compatible> section of the bootinfo file. Looking at the BootX file in /System/Library/CoreServices helped a lot to solve this issue."

Andrew asks the question, "I would like to know how to change filetype icons like if I want to change all pdf files to a different icons. I have purchased Candybar which is great for toolbar and folder, but it doesn't seem to do general files."

In some ways, because of the Package structure of MacOS X applications, changing filetype icons is in many ways easier than under Classic MacOS. In the case of Acrobat, start by viewing the package contents. Navigate your way to the folder shown below. In the Resources folder are the various icons for the files types. Replace these with icons with 128x128 sizes and give them the same name. These will become your new file type icons!

  • How many different ways are there to point? Five new cursors have been added to the Mighty Mouse archive bringing the total number to 50 cursor sets!

  • Brandon Turner created a great looking Boot Panel and Login screen makeover package titled The Power of X. While it has a metallic look, it is not the usual brushed metal.

  • The newest Mozilla 1.3 no longer has a splash screen! Does this mean that Flameia's fire splash will be the last one posted on ResExcellence? Stay tuned for details!

  • Dr. Evil and his protegee, Mini Me, squeezed into this Boot Image by Todd.

  • Kevin MacLeod sent another of his cool Camino Makeovers. This one will give Camino the Brushed metal look.

Time for another great contest at ResExcellence. Everyone likes to submit desktop snapshots for the ResExcellence Archive right? Now we bring you a chance to win a program that will clean it up before you submit it! But first we want to see it messy. The contest is called MacMaid Giveaway. MacMaid, is the easiest way to organize your desktop. MacMaid makes organizing your computer as easy as clicking a button. For people that keep everything they download on their desktop and dislike having to manually move and delete files each time will find MacMaid very useful. Check out the contest page.

Labels X 1.1.2 was released by Unsanity LLC as a minor update. Labels X brings file and folder labeling features into Mac OS X. With this release they added an option to change file modification date on label change. The Labels contextual menu is no longer shown for the Desktop folder. There were also fixes performed such as an incompatibility with Folder Icon X contextual menu module and a bug causing Labels X contextual menu to crash the Finder under some circumstances.

SafariMasks 1.2 is the next release from Waterfall Software for customizing the look of Safari. To use this program, simply choose a new theme from our list and click install. There is no specifics on what is new with this release.

Meteorologist 1.2.5 is a weatherman program for your menubar. If you like to know what is going on outside or around the country but can't get out, this program helps. The list of changes is rather long. Stop by the home page for a complete listing.

Classic Window Management, mentioned last week has undergone an update to beta 1.0b4. This update corrects an issue where closing the frontmost window of a background Carbon application would inadvertently cause that application to be brought to the front.

Themer 3.0 is a theme switching utility for Mac OS X. The application comes with a number of pre-tested custom themes that modify the look and feel of Mac OS X.

StarfishX is now out in a new beta version. Giving credit where credit is due, the program generates cool desktop patterns, and is based on Mars Saxman's original Mac OS 9 implementation of Starfish. A partial listing follow with what is new:

  • Each new pattern now has a unique file name.

  • Added option to keep recent patterns.

  • Added "Pattern" menu with 'Create New Pattern' and 'Create Until
    "Recent" Cache Full'.

  • Added a line of text under the main image well which indicates the palette used and size of the pattern selected/being generated.

  • The main window can now be closed. This lets StarfishX essentially run as just an icon in the dock.

iClock 1.0.3b3 is the newest release from Script Software. iClock is a menu bar replacement clock for Apple's default clock. Have the day, date and time in different fonts and colors in the menubar. iClock is also a kind of centrally located time hub from which many time related functions can be controlled. This release adds and international clock with lots of options.

Fluid is pretty cool. It is a screensaver. But it can also have problems and this release fixed the bad prefs saving causing Config button to be disabled after a while

CoolBackground acts as an animated desktop background with a screensaver. With this release it becomes a full Cocoa application which will run in background It can now be run at login. It also adds the following localizations: French, German, Dutch, Spanish and Catalan

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

I'm embarrassed to say that until this week, I had never read the entire text of the US Constitution. It's a surprisingly simple document. Amazing it has generated so much controversy over the past 200 years.

The very first amendment to the Constitution is generally thought of as the one dealing with free speech, but it also covers the separation of church and state.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In 1942 Congress added the Pledge of Allegiance to the official Flag code. At that time, the words "Under God" were not present. During the McCarthy anti-communism campaign in the mid-1950s, the words "Under God" were added to distinguish the US from the godless USSR.

Now, I ain't no lawyer, but it seems to me that if the Constitution says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" and then Congress codifies a Pledge with the words, "Under God", then that's like going to the grocery store and getting in the "10 Items or Less" line with 11 items.

I wish the forum thread would have dealt more with the legal issue of the Pledge, but as so often happens when religion is involved, the thread degenerated into a god versus no-god flame war.

Let's have a lighter topic for this week!

Starting several years ago with the bondi iMac, Apple removed ADB, floppy drives, and SCSI ports from its computers. Unfortunately, I still have a boatload of hardware; Jazz drive, Zip drive, scanners, and hard disks, that require a SCSI port. How about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you still use SCSI devices?"
