Today's News by Cletus A Better Finder Attributes X is a CMM to help quickly change the attributes of a selected file. The description goes this way: The tool allows both the modification and the creation date of a file to be adjusted. Moreover you can "lock" files so that they cannot be modified, renamed, moved or copied; and you can decide on a per-file basis whether its file extension (e.g. ".gif") is visible or not. WorkStrip X not only has been updated, but is being offered at a special discount of 25% off if purchased before March 21st. It is a system wide productivity-enhancement tool. Two of the main features that are cool are that it allows you to preview files without loading an application, and allowing for multiple Workspaces to organize your work. This update bring with it compatibility with Jaguar. Roadbook provides a nice GUI in the menubar for accessing bookmarks of all the popular web browsers. The list is long. Using Roadbook, you can control and edit the bookmarks you have Safari, Mozilla, Netscape, Chimera, Omniweb, iCab, Internet Explorer, Address Book, iChoose, and RADBookmarks. Pretty comprehensive. - Supports Apple's Address Book.
- Now launches Camino instead of Navigator (i.e. Chimera).
- Improved Internet Explorer bookmark importing.
- You can now remove duplicates from your Roadbook bookmarks database.
- Contains various other bug fixes.
Show Desktop 1.6 is the newest release from Everyday Software. By clicking on the Dock icon when this program is running, you can hide all current applications and bring the Finder to the front. Works great. Additionally, Shift-clicking on the icon will show all apps. It also offers several Finder options such as: minimizing Finder windows, opening a new Finder window, and hiding the Finder. Version 1.6 adds the following: - Added contextual menu to the menu bar icon. (Note: invoke via control-click, rather than right-click.)
- Fixed a bug that would prevent the Show Finder Window after hiding option to not work correctly.
- Hopefully fixed a bug that would cause the menu bar icon to draw incorrectly after pushing it.
DockExtender by CodeTek Studios, Inc. will allow you to minimize dock clutter by allowing you to create DockExtender Menus that fit right into the dock. Version 3.0.3 adds the following: - Fixed a crash caused by multiple threads attempting to access the preferences files.
- Clicking on a DockExtender Dockling can no longer accidently activate the screensaver.
- The menu selection is no longer un-highlighted when you move the mouse after opening a Dockling menu.
- The menu bar tool no longer relies on the Helvetica font being installed and active.
- Fixed an issue where the DockExtenderPref package was sometimes cancelling the installation.

WeatherPop and WeatherPop Advance 1.7 is now out. This menubar weatherman has the following feature addition to this release: WeatherPop 1.7 has the ability to determine whether or not a weather data source is missing data for the city the user has chosen and will automatically choose a different data source with more accurate and complete information. Now you can doodle on your monitor screen! What next? Panic has released Desktastic 3.0. Desktastic lets you take notes, visually demonstrate, draw stupid pictures, and much more! Kill some time and relieve your brain from stress and try this out Robb Timlin thought the ResExcellence readership might be interested in his new freeware product (currently in Public Beta, v1.0b3) known as Classic Window Management. I think he will be correct as this sounds pretty darn cool if you ask me. CWM for short, allows you to have your OS X windows grouped (or layered) by application, so when you click on a window to bring it the front, all of that app's windows come forward with it, just like in OS 9. This works especially well with the Finder, allowing you to once again simply click on the Desktop to bring all open Finder windows to the front. CWM lets you choose which layering style (Classic or standard OS X) you prefer as the default, and configures a modifier key so you can use the alternate layering style when you want to. CWM requires OS X v10.2 or higher, and Unsanity's Application Enhancer (APE) v1.2.1. HotApp has been bumped up to 1.7.2. Use this keyboard launcher to assign shortcut keys to launch applications or switch between running apps/ quickly. This update fixes the problem when quitting System Preferences. It also includes minor internal improvements such as a minor memory leak, and improved internal logic for speed. Another beta is out for Keyboard Maestro 2.0.0b2. This is a popular little program for launching applications and creating shortcuts and macros. The PR reads: This version of Keyboard Maestro represents a complete rewrite of its "inner core" in order to introduce a new and excitement enhancement - multiple trigger types for macros! As of this beta version, Keyboard Maestro supports these trigger types: Iconizer Pro 1.8.1 is the newest release of this icon creating tool. Using a selection if pictures, you can generate a set of 32 bit full color icons. This feature is normally used for creating a background of CD, folder or other container windows. The icons can also be viewed on any Mac OS but Mac OS 8.5 or higher is required to view 32 bit icons. Version 1.8.1 adds the following: Users can drop an image file to the preview area to view that image. Iconizing engines were updated to improve their performances. I received nothing but positive emails concerning GyazMail. Which brings me to my one last rant ... for a while that is. iCal is suffering. My problems with reminders never running continue with iCal. They have only come on one time since it came out. Why it worked that one time I will never know. Plus I need to change my eye glass prescription every week as I can only read the pastel colors when I am two inches away from the monitor. Apple seems intent on not updating iCal except sporadically and then not addressing these issues people complained of back in July of 2002. Therefore it is time to switch and that took me directly to DayChaser. Consider this another plug. Look into DayChaser from Econ Technologies, Inc. Superb! It instantly replaced iCal for me. I have never looked back. It was actually around long before iCal came out. It provided me with my much need reminder function. And get this.... It works! It was just updated also. Be sure to check out their other fine programs also like: Portraits & Prints and its companion app TemplateMaker, ChronoSync and ImageCaster. DayChaser is a calendar and scheduling application that not only allows you to organize your time but can also organize your work habits. Sporting a very user friendly Max OS X native user interface, DayChaser allows you to create and manage multiple calendar documents simultaneously. Each calendar document contains its own unique set of scheduled entries - events, appointments, memos and executable tasks. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? - Paul Boutin took a photo he's titled "Moody Way" with his Powershot S40 on a trip back from Tahiti this February. Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle A small roadblock is stopping me from using a new ext2 driver to mount Linux partitions under MacOS X. Unknown to me, one of the recent MacOS X updates rendered my Adaptec SlimSCSI card inoperable! Now I have no way to mount SCSI drives at all on my Titanium Powerbook. I ordered a Belkin SCSI to Firewire adapter. Hopefully it will allow me to mount my old SCSI devices. Maybe then I can move on to the ext2 Linux partitions. Kevin Husted spent several sleepless nights creating his newest MacOS X Appearance Theme, SS_TuXedo. While the color scheme is black and white, it's amazing how light the look of the theme is.

Tidbits: Updates coming soon for Unsanity's Labels X and Mighty Mouse. Plus a small hint at yet another new Haxie! Time for a plug. I don't normally do this, but I really like this program. I have been back and forth between Entourage and Mail.app. I have never had a single problem with Entourage, but since switching to DayLite for my PIM/CRM needs, it has made Entourage redundant. Mail has been difficult to use. I have had trouble sending files and it keeps forgetting my password. I have tried all the fixes suggested and it still fails. Enter GyazMail! Outstanding is the best way I can think of to describe the program. It has a clean, logical interface. It imported from items from Mail and Entourage without a hitch. It sort reminds me of Claris Emailer for some reason, which I had used for years. The author is very responsive to suggestions and updates are frequent. It is currently freeware during the beta stages and will be priced under $18's for the final release. Well worth it, and I would pay it now if I could. If you are looking for an alternative to Apple's Mail program, I recommend GyazMail. Some details can be found below and screenshots from the homepage here.: GyazMail is an e-mail client software for Mac OS X. GyazMail is developed from scratch to be a simple, easy-to-use e-mail client with many features, based on the Cocoa framework. Currently it is in early development stage , but progressing every day. - Multiple accounts
- Management of messages by one file per message (RFC 822 format)
- Many character sets support, including UTF-8 (Unicode)
- Main window with 2 or 3 panes
- Message threading support
- Message search on multiple criteria, in specified folders
- Message rules and filters
- Template for outgoing messages
- Message queueing

Polling Place by Michael Coyle Just about two-thirds of readers have the G4 chip. Which isn't surprising since Apple is really pushing the G4. If you go to their site, the G3 equipped iBook isn't even mentioned on the main page! The same is true of the old Snow iMac. G3, we hardly knew ya! G5, I hope you come soon! I have a hard time believing that there are a dozen readers still using a 68k Mac! Tell me you're pulling my leg. My Powerbook 3400 with MacOS 8.6 is barely usable anymore. It feels like MacOS X 10.0.3. :-) The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the Pledge of Allegiance could not be recited as long as it contained the words "Under God". These two words were adding in 1954 by Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus. The words are not in the original version written by Francis Bellamy in 1892. Even if you are not an American, this court case is an interesting test on the separation of church and state. This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you think 'Under God' should be in the Pledge?"
