Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle Since I no longer have Linux/PPC installed on my Powerbook, I don't have a backup computer incase the ResExcellence Linux/PPC server goes down. I keep a recent backup on my HFS+ drive, but most recent backups are on other ext2 partitions. This could leave me in a pinch if the server goes down. That's why I'm happy to see that Brian Bergstrand is heading up an effort to bring an ext2 driver to MacOS X. While the newest version is 'read only', it would allow me to quickly copy the ResExcellence Linux partition to MacOS X and get the site back up in a few minutes. Brian confirms the driver will Automount the ext2 partition, so no more hacking an fstab file! Watch for more on this project next week. If you have used this driver, drop me a line with your comments. A new Mozilla theme called Bluecurve should look nice on your desktop (pictured below). Another new release is Pimpzilla, but it's a little too funky for me! While not exactly a new article, Donald Larson's tutorial on building a Cocoa application using Applescript Studio and Interface Builder is still very relevant Check it out. If you think themes under MacOS is a hot topic, it's downright sizzling on the KDE and Gnome mailing lists. There is a contingent of users that believe those Linux desktops are customizable to the point where they're unusable. In an audio interview, Amy Reynolds offers her perspective on the current state of skinning one's operating system. As an interface designer, her opinion is an interesting one.
User Contributed Splash Screens. by Michael Coyle It's easier than ever to contribute using the new Browser Based Upload Page! If you contribute a file to any section of ResExcellence, you could win a PowerMax gift certificate worth $50 ! (How?) - Perhaps things are cooling down after the hot release of Mighty Mouse. Today I'm posting only three Mighty Mouse Cursors .
- Another beautiful Photoshop splash has been created by Chris Button.
- Our own Jeremy Hoesly sends this MOSS of a towering mountain peak. Jeremy took the photo on a resent trip out west. To see more of his work visit his site.
- A Ghostly Green Progress bar for Safari was scared up by Tom Hackett.
- A big Star Wars fan, Emily Grae created a Boot Image of the Mandalorian insignia worn by Boba Fett and his father. (How do people remember these things!!)

Today's News by Cletus There are a lot of individual utilities around for dealing with Mac OS X. If you want to try a new one that incorporates a variety of functions into just one program, give Cocktail a try. Everything you need to do from Prebinding to Permission repairs to removing cache files are found in one interface. Changes in this newest release include: - Changes to the interface.
- "Password (1)" bug fixed.
- Various minor bug fixes.
- "Use the Desktop" setting replaced by "Scroll arrows together at both ends"
- Mac OS X 10.2.4 compatible.
- Donate button now opens default web browser .
If you get that darn error saying you can not delete "this or that" file, give Delete It 2.0 a try. It deletes files that can't be trashed initially. It is described as working this way: "This program is written in REALbasic and uses the "sudo rm -R" terminal command through a shell interface to delete stubborn files. It requires that the current user is an admin." A streamlined interface is new in this version, as is the addition of the following buttons for Home, Trash, Desktop, Documents and Public Folders. You can now hide hidden files and auto check for new versions. iClock by Script Software, is a menu bar replacement clock for Apple's default clock. Have the day, date and time in different fonts and colors in the menubar. iClock is also a kind of centrally located time hub from which many time related functions can be controlled. It also includes a customizable calendar. Pretty cool! YazSoft has released version1.9.6 of their download accelerator utility Speed Download. Changes include: Updated SD PLUGINS for better performance and compatibility. Improved support for .zip and .gz extensions, and several other internal enhancements. Synergy is the popular program that places three buttons in your menubar, that allow control of iTunes. The description goes on: The Synergy controls, together with the ability to control iTunes via system-wide Hot Key combinations, mean that Synergy provides the fastest way of skipping between songs when using the keyboard or the mouse; all this without having to switch to iTunes, or access its Dock menu. The March issue of About This Particular Mac is now available. ATPM includes an Part 1 on how to transfer LPs to CDs. Another article deals with how to make customizable boot disks. Then there is Cortland, their monthly cartoon strip that pokes fun at the computer world in general. Very interesting reading and well worth the download. Available as either a PDF or offline ezine with your web browser. Check it out! Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!

Cropping Graphics with REALbasic by Erick Tejkowski | Due to illness, I was unable to post the third part of the Cropping Graphics tutorial last Thursday. To help you catch up, we'll cover two tutorials this week. Instead of the usual REALbasic News, today we'll look at Part 3 of the tutorial. Then, next time we'll complete the project. These tutorials cover the basics of how to implement click-and-drag graphics selection and cropping, like you'll find in many popular applications (e.g.Photoshop, iPhoto, and the Finder). StuffIt - The Complete Compression Solution
Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle Max Rudberg had a week off from school. He used that time to update all of his themes to include the latest feedback and to make them compatible (and safe) with 10.2.4. If you use any of the themes listed below, go to his site and grab your update! The list of changes is long! - BBX Mercury X 1.1.1
- Brushed 2.2.2
- Milk 1.6
- Classic Platinum 1.2.2
- Mac OS XP 2.0.1
- Rhapsodized 1.3
- SmoothStripes
- Aqua Extreme
Josh Zerin has written a simple tutorial that allows you to set a default name in the Login Window of MacOS X. You need to have the Developer Tools installed since this will introduce you to the Interface Builder application. As we approach Saint Patrick's Day, the luck of the Irish is surely with Grayson Hall! He is this month's winner of a $50 gift certificate from PowerMax! All he had to do to win was submit a creation to ResExcellence. Grayson sent a Desktop Picture. Many months ago, ResExcellence readers drooled over a glowing mouse that was only available in Asia. Now, MacMouse sells a version of the Crystal mouse made just for Mac users. What's different about this 2 button mouse is that it tilts left and right to click the button. Here is a little info from the company FAQ: The MacMice Optical Mouse is manufactured for us by Adomax, a high quality Taiwanese OEM/ODM specialty manufacturer of mouse products. They make many different versions of their clear-top mouse, for dozens of different supply channels and brand name buyers, one low-budget version of which is being marketed in the United States as the "Crystal Neon" mouse. Another version, using higher quality parts is made for Samsung, for use with high-end PC's. And finally, three new sites have been added to the ResExcellence Links Page.
User Contributed Splash Screens. by Michael Coyle It's easier than ever to contribute using the new Browser Based Upload Page! If you contribute a file to any section of ResExcellence, you could win a PowerMax gift certificate worth $50 ! (How?) - Repeat after me, "Another five Mighty Mouse Cursors have been added to the archive!"
- For all the Devil worshipers in the crowd, a Pentagram MOSS was contributed by John Jones (not relation to the Rev. Jim Jones). The text is in Latin, and Babelfish doesn't 'do' Latin. My best guess is that is says the usual cloven-foot mantra, "Hail Satan, Praise Satan". If you are somehow offended, do yourself a favor and click on any of the other fine links at ResExcellence instead.
- Lincoln Benedict sent a nice Boot Panel featuring a zooming Audi.
- Now I've seen everything (having also seen a Satanic MOSS)! This Safari Progressbar from Gengar pops up an image of Switcher Ellen Feiss! He cleverly increased the size of the Left Progress image so as not to interfere with the Site Icon.
- This Boot Panel, called Container, looks like the MacOS X logo has been placed in a steel oven. Looks cool. UniverseG also sent a Boot Image of the BSD Devil.
Today's News by Cletus This program is quickly taking on a life of its own. Konfabulator 1.0.2 has been released. The program allows the use of "widgets" that will provide the users with any number of informations telling desktop windows from weather to what their favorite stocks are doing at the moment. Several are interactive and a couple provide live ticker information about news headlines. Using the JavaScript runtime engine for Mac OS X you can easily create your own widgets. This update provides several fixes. CoolBackground animates the desktop background in the Finder using your favorite screensaver. A reminder on the page states the (of course) such activity is pretty darn CPU intensive, therefore it is advised to use this application only with high-powered machines. Changes in this release include: - It is now a full Cocoa application.
- It can run in background.
- You can set it up to run at login.
- French, German and Catalan localization have been added.
- Italian and Spanish versions coming soon and they request help for the Japanese translation.
Safari XTra will permit you to do a couple of useful things right from the menu bar. First up, you can view all Safari bookmarks, and secondly, you can search Google. Both from the menubar. Changes: - Now you can organize your bookmarks as groups.

- New monochromatic menubar icon
Default Folder X was updated once again to version 1.6.7 now. It quickly added the German localization and improves support for Path Finder which is CocoaTech's Finder replacement. It seems it suffered from a bug in the earlier release. It also corrects a bug in Default Folder X's rename command and fixes problems with keyboard navigation. It is recommended for all Default Folder X users. A new and really cool AppleScript for AppleWorks has been released called Sidekick. It resides in the menubar for AppleWorks 6. It states: Sidekick is a Cocoa-based application that creates a menu bar item for AppleWorks 6, providing quick access to recent documents, start Classic version of AppleWorks 6 or 5, search Google, online dictionaries or thesaurus, and launch companion applications including Address Book, Calculator, and Key Caps. Safari Enhancer has also seen an update. Described as activating several hidden features of Apples beta browser software. The change in this version: Fixes a minor bug when trying to import IE favorites with the "Any HTML File" option instead of the "Internet Explorer" option. This could result in hiding your IE favorites. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Polling Place by Michael Coyle Talk about a fast acceptance rate! Over 72% of readers look for a DVD before a VHS tape. A common complaint in the forum thread is how easily a DVD disk can skip due to scratching. Of course, I can't count the number of times the picture on a VHS tape has distorted due to a wrinkle on the tape. Both formats have their weaknesses. You can still find LP records thanks to audio purists and DJs, but it's hard to imagine anyone will miss the VHS tape. Before long, they will be as hard to find as 5 1/4 inch floppies! If rumors are to be believed (ha), we will have Apple computers containing an IBM Power 970 chip within the year. It's hard to believe we already feel the G4 is outdated! This week's Polling Place asks, "What chip is in your main Apple computer?" "Thank You" to the many readers who sent photos from around the world of their warm weather. It elevated my mood tremendously, plus I listened to my first spring training baseball game on Sunday (Sox beat Diamondbacks). I was feeling so optimistic, I almost put gas in the lawn mover! Below, and in no particular order, are my favorite pictures: Omar Sanchez and his panorama from the Dominican Republic, unnamed pool at eye level, Tom Hackett has lunch on Waikiki beach in Florida, another unnamed photo where the lava meets the ocean, and Robin Avery's backyard in Petaluma, California.
