02-28-03 News Icons/Desktops REALbasic

Today's News by Cletus

SuperCal 1.1.3 has been released. This is very well done utility that will give you access to many controls for setting up your monitor. It works equally well for CRT's and LCD's. SuperCal doesn't require any hardware measurement devices - only your eyeballs as it uses a visual display calibrator for helping you setup your monitor.

The whimsical Eyeballs is now at version 2.4.1. This is a program that will watch the cursor from the desktop or menu bar with a set of eyes. This program features a brand new icon and several language fixes and localizations.

The popular HotApp program allows you to assign program launches to keys. Now at version 1.7.1, it provides a minor improvement for the quick search in the Address Book.

Everyone seems to like FuzzyClock. It has just been updated to 1.1b2, so pop over and pick up this new version. It is an alternative menu bar clock which displays the current time e.g. like "five past ten" in the menu bar. Currently available in about 35 languages and idioms, version 1.1b2 adds the following:

  • Special times are now sorted by start time

  • Preferences window is now resizable

  • Added Romanaccio - a Roman Italian slang

  • Added a switch for font with shadow or font without shadow

  • Removed wrong language tab from Preferences which came with the last beta
  • Added a menu item for the current time

StarfishX 1.1b1 is out for beta testing. It allows you to create desktop patterns. It is based on Mars Saxman's original Mac OS 9 implementation of Starfish. Version 1.1b1 adds the following according to the PR:

  • Added timer options to automatically generate new patters after specified time period.

  • Added Dock Menu with option to start/stop pattern generation.

  • The position and size of the main window are now remembered between launches.

  • When the main window is minimized, the dock icon for the window shows the current progress of the image being generated (or the last complete image generated).

  • Added option to minimize the main window at startup.

  • Added popup menu to control how the pattern is installed on your monitor (using the same options available in the Desktop preference pane). The default it "Tile".

  • Added a numeric prefix to the display names in the "For:" monitor popup. This should restore secondary monitor(s) to the menu when there were matching names (such as "Apple Studio Display").

A favorite utility of mine is Memory Usage Getter and it has just been updated to version 2.2. Have you every tried this? It provides detailed information in the familiar Mac OS 9 format. Version 2.2 includes several new features, including the ability to kill processes from within MUG, a true Cocoa toolbar, and French and Spanish localizations. Really, I am serious, give this one a try!

Restore Desktop 2.0 will position your icons back where you had them prior to changing resolutions. This program of course works with Mac OS 8 through Mac OS 9.

Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle

I can't take it anymore. Not one more time do I want to stand on my driveway in the dark before dawn and scrap a layer of thin ice off my windshield; or stick ear plugs in as I pull the cord on the noisy snow blower. Most mornings my eye lashes freeze together as my breath escapes from under a wool scarf.

I picture Ilona Melis making her icons in the Florida sunshine and I'm green with envy, or is it grey with frostbite? I picture Peter McHugh hacking an old copy of MacOS 8.1 during an Australian summer.

I need a "Pick Me Up" and you're the one who is going to help me. Some of you gentle readers must live in climates where the smell of palm trees and the crashing of waves greet you in the morning. Please go outside today and snap a digital picture. There is no need to tweak it in Photoshop, just send me a photo evoking waves and warmth. No cheating by pulling out a picture from last August. I need to know that people somewhere on this planet are warm RIGHT NOW.

I'll post my favorites on Monday.

Change the Default Safari Bookmark Icon

My goodness, isn't the Globe icon that's used in Safari a little bright? I like to use Max Rudberg's Brushed Metal Theme on my computer, so those little spheres of bright blue make me dizzy. After a fair amount of digging, I found the location of the image file (see below). Surprise! It's not an icon file but a TIFF image.

Show the package contents on a copy of Safari. Under WebKit.framework work your way to the Resources folder. The default bookmark image is titled url_icon.tiff. You can replace this with an image of your own, but if you use Photoshop to create it, you will need to tell that graphic app not to "maximize compatibility for Photoshop files". It's a preference of File handling which adds a lot of extra crap (can I say that?) to the image file size.

Once you have replaced the TIFF image, launch the copy of Safari and admire your work. If you're not too handy with those new-fangled graphic programs, download my set of three premade replacements.

My buddy Russ IM'ed me with a link to WiebeTECH where you can get some cool solutions for interfacing ATA drives to a Firewire buss. They also have some huge, fast drives that are buss powered, so they are perfect for location recording of audio (Russ and I are both audio engineers).

My favorite item from their web site is the 1G Firewire drive on a keychain!

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

10% of ResEx readers have a vanity license plate on their car. The forum thread lists several humorous plates from readers. I have always been leery of getting a vanity plate. I'd rather travel anonymously as I cruise five miles over the speed limit!

Just as vinyl music records gave way to CDs, the DVD is rapidly replacing the VHS tape. What I love about DVDs is all the extra material you get: cut scenes, interviews, documentaries on making special effects; all these items make DVD rentals preferred over VHS tapes. How fast have you made the transition? This week's Polling Place asks, "Which do you rent more often, VHS or DVD?"
